Yeah, I rode yesterday and it was a little sketchy without studs. I have a mix of dry land and snow/ice covered now in Portsmouth.

I was thinking the same thing for western riding. It would be tough. Even here last winter it was a little too deep to really ride, and I'm with you on the xc and snowmobile trails...kinda boring.

Early fatty ride and corn late morning turns is in your future!

Predicting 3-5" here. Should be perfect if it stays in the 3" range.

Nothing more frustrating than breaking thru the crust and stalling out.. go to put your foot down and it sinks 2+ feet and then slowly tip over into the unconsolidated snow and then wallow around while you try to untangle yourself from the bike finally emerging covered in snow.

Went out yesterday and checked out one final ace up my sleeve.. sketchy skin track exits-o-death that get all iced up and dished out. Where you fly down like an out of control rocket taking any chance you can find to scrub speed.... actually pretty fun on the fatbike. Still needs a bit more freeze/thaw.

Yeah, that was happening a lot last yr for us too.

Today's ride was dicey and fun depending on aspects. North facing was snow covered sandpaper! Awesome! South and western were dirt or thin layer of snow and ice. Kinda fun to have 4 fat tires sliding sideways and somehow staying upright :) Running flats this time of year is key!

from yesterday, all snow on this side of the state, and ride anywhere.
pick any line and go, all rocks and logs are covered, all hay fields are lunar, corn rows!

Other than being frozen it's not much different from October around here. Maybe a little because the leaves are blown out of the way but that's about it. Thankfully winter is supposed to be on the way for tomorrow.

I got hooked up with a Bluto recently and built a wheel yesterday. I still need a crown race, anybody have a spare 1.5 kickin? They are surprisingly difficult to acquire right now.

If you haven't ridden pipeline you need to. There are a couple of descents in this zone that are similar and it's all "easy" dirt road climbs up. I say easy because 3k vert is a big climb.

So I go to mount up my Dillr 4 studdy tires and the axle will not come out of the bluto fork. The QR just un screws and this small c shaped part falls out. Taken it back to the shop to git fixed tues.
WTF! Lucky I did not have a flat out in nowhereville.

I just need a crown race and a fatty rim strip and I'll get the Bluto on my bike. Think I'm gonna try the shrink wrap tubeless method.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to snowshoe my trails in once this is over. I'm sill riding single track that only has short uphills, so it's doable. There are some dirt roads that snow machines sometimes ride and our single feeds in and out of, so that will help if they get out there and pack it down. But damn, I'm so ready to ski now! Lift weds, tour sat, lift sun is the tentative plan.

I added a slightly stoopid track to my vid and Vimeo shut me down. That's new to me. Anyway, here is a little vid of my local ride...it was snowing so lens got a little messy.

The riding in moab is excellent right now. Barely any snow and the trails are nice and tacky. Rode a few new trail systems called navajo rocks and also at Klonzo north. The amount of new trails down there is truly staggering. I only brought the fatty and on the trails it feels how I imagine driving a 79 CJ around the nurburgring would feel. A bit sluggish. Fine on anything downhill or if the trail has bermed corners but getting those wide rims up on edge just feels odd. similar to my lotus 138s on groomers.

However... decided to do a little exploring down some ohv trails and eventually found a great dry slickrock creekbed / wash and as soon as I started up I felt like a chubby pre-teen in a bee costume. The blind melon started cranking and I started to see what kind of riding is possible with a rig like this. Fuck the trails, I'm going off road!

It's going to be a lot of work to actually get my trails back. It may never happen! 25-30" last week and now we're looking at another 12" today. I need a snowmobile because this snowshoeing isn't cutting it!
