PSA: Mount your own fucking skis.

So what's up, can I just cut my ski boot in half with a bandsaw and mount a skateboard deck to it? Buckle it into a ski binding and call it a snowskate?

Like the Christy Sports guy insists I must do cuz that's how he made adaptive gear once

5mm (about 1/4") is something I can feel on some skis but it's usually a minor difference until you get to about 1cm.

Having said that, given how much of a pain in the ass it would be to move a mount by 5mm to match the other ski, I'd personally prefer to leave them mismatched instead of changing both skis to some other mount point that is at least 1cm different (for hole spacing concerns).

You could also A/B them by switching feet and seeing if you notice something consistent.

Gave my buddy some skis a few years ago that he never got along with. He just gave them back to me remounted with tele bindings. He off handedly mentioned that he mounted them using ShoeGoo because epoxy is such a bitch if you want to pull the binding. He's an engineer and I'm largely ignorant, but how would you folks feel about going mach looney with ShoeGoo holding everything together?

Did he use screws too or just the ShoeGoo? If screws involved and they’re tight, send it. I use GFlex but it’s arguably overkill.

Thankfully, screws are a part of the mount.

John I know a few people that use shoe goo or aqua seal and it’s fine. Just another way to keep the water out. You’re good to go.

Yeah, the main point of the glue is to seal the hole and keep water out. A lot of things can do that fine. The screws are the real structural part.

Back in the day Swissific used 2 sided carpet tape and claims there were no failures

he also went straight up hill, used milk crates for snow shoes and skied a lot of gravel banks

Mounted my own (wife's) skis, half freehand half paper template. Backland 107s with C-Raider 10s. Spent about an hour making sure everything was perfect.

camera angle often does that, and is that ever a pretty set-up

I just mounted Pivot 15s on these Blaze 106s. I used the binding freedom FKS Look/Geze paper template to create a plexiglass template for my boot sole length. Ski center was done (and double/triple checked) using two combination squares. I’m also did a trial run on a 2x4 to make sure the template was centered and the boot sole length was correct.

Not as easy as a jig in the shop, but for the once or twice a year, it’s all good!

Any easy way to do kids bindings? Templates don't seem to be easy to come by.

Use the binding itself as the template or you could use it to trace out a template on paper

Q: Do all Look Pivots (14, 15, GW, pre-GW) all use the same template?

I think the answer is yes, but wondering if the tgr hive mind can confirm my suspicions. After all, there’s only 1 template.
