The plate filters can be used with a holder or handheld to get the transition in the correct spot in the frame.

ETA: I know nothing about this particular product. Just that it's the style I'm referencing.

Phildo's got it right. I have 2 singh ray GND's that are the card style. They can either be hand-held or in a mount. I have the the cokin p-mount.


I'll handhold those guys with the UWA for something like this… With the Soft GND. Which as it turns out is a bad example since the horizon is near center...

That previous posted North Peak shot had the hard GND at the lake's horizon right side up and the soft GND upside down to stop down the bright grass in the foreground. Just for balance. And that foreground turf still wants to come in a little bit hot. Though well within the histograms tattle-telling…

Last week, on a lark, my mom sent us a suit of mine from when I was a toddler. We have a photo of me in it when I was just about my son's age (I'm the 3rd and he's the 4th). Here's my attempt to reproduce that photo 40+ years later. Now, I'm in no way, shape or from a people photographer, but I though I did ok.

Two speedlights (1/16 power) on wireless triggers bounced off 24" umbrellas on stands slightly higher than his head height aimed down. Fortunately, our walls were almost the same background color as the photographers backdrop from 40+ years ago...

I've joined the local photography society and we had an outing on Saturday to practice/shoot some portraiture with a few members of the local theatre company. It was my first attempt at shooting formal/posed portraits. Learned a lot. Here are some of the results...

Had an interesting idea for a photo that involved skating through this huge puddle with a GoPro. Unfortunately, I forgot to charge the GoPro. I did get one that turned out kinda cool, though, and luckily I figured it out before I soaked myself for no reason :)

Many folks patiently wait for the 100mm Lee Filer holder to come into stock (it's perputially out of stock lots of places).

Century optics markets the exact same filter holder, it's even manufactured by lee.

Brutal winter here, followed by a great mellow spring with good weather and near normal precip. A couple weeks ago things turned and we entered monsoon season. Making the most of it with a 5 am dawn patrol.

I waited until close to dusk last night to head up to South Boulder Creek (via Walker Ranch) to practice some more long(er) exposure water shots. These were taken with my 24-105 or 17-40 and just a ND 0.6 B&W filter with the ISO cranked down and the f-stop cranked up between 11-18.

Question... when stacking filters like this ND and a CPL, does it matter which is closest to the lens? I had the ND on first and then the CPL (a thin Hoya) on top and I noticed some vignetting.

I like this because I feel it gives off a Rockwell-esque vibe. Crappy iPhone pic that seemed to work. Carousel was built in 1883 in Watch Hill, RI, just a minute down the road from my house. It was my son's first ride.

There's just something about this -- the lines are very captivating. The lines of the flower stalks and rocks patterns at the bottom, the lines of the hoodoos, the lines of the clouds. Very nice.

Thanks man. I used a 3 stop reverse. Very little other processing was done. I texted a couple of my buddies a cell phone shot of the back of my camera. Here's that image....

First time shooting with my iPhone (completely unintentional but had just forgot my camera). Had to clean up a lot of the noise in LR3, but was generally surprised. This is a cross post from the Pano thread of a 5 shot stich (using Hugin) I shot with the iPhone.
