Tess Johnson is high school girl from Edwards up the road, member of the state champ soccer team, skied in freestyle moguls. Didn't make the final cut but skied well and sounds like she had a good event.
Women's moguls apparently ain't a marquee event, so the commentator is like an Irish guy or something and he sucks really bad. Noticeably bad. I know nothing of that event and could have done an equally bad job. Pretty sure it's the same guy announcing W's slalom on the internet video now. Bode is seriously good and this guy is like way the worst.
A bunch of kids from our area are competing. I grew up in Iowa and I don't know if the entire state could produce a winter Olympian. Vail has like 15 on Team USA or something like that? 2 of them live in Eagle, Jakes Pates in halfpipe snowboard and Meghan Tierney runs boarder X. Rakai Tait competed for New Zealand but he was my neighbor for a bit, he may have moved up valley again for closer training access. They all seem like really focused and good kids.
Eagle hosted a going away ceremony for Jake in the town park (and Meghan but she was out of town). They rode a horse and buggy right through the park, past the outdoor ice rink and to the stage. Crowd went crazy. The local elementary kids (Jake's alma mater) sang the national anthem that made me swell with a strange patriotism and genuine national pride, envisioning these kind of small snowy mountain towns all over the world doing the same thing for the local hero. Jake qualified for finals and finished 8th place in the entire world. America, fuck yeah.
