What a difference a storm makes! Conditions look good for the races now:

My dad will be happy when they open up the area to the public again. The venue is his go-to nordic spot, and he's been perpetually annoyed as it has changed over time and catered more to competition. Between the Loppet and the high school teams, and now preparing for the World Cup, access for ordinary folk who just want to take a lap or two after work has gotten progressively worse.
About a foot or so of snow in the past 4 days has opened centers that were downright dangerous (if they were even open) just last weekend.

10k individual freestyle from Minneapolis on NBC right now, it looks great. Women are shredding it right now.
Got out today for an hour of power

You were there? That’s awesome. It looked incredible on TV. Perfect snow and wicked blue sky.
We flew in with team Rosie. Back to the’Ghee Tuesday.

land of enchantment nordic today. mom and pop xc center.
looking south to wheeler peak etc. taos ski valley behind it.
Fantastic. Congrats to you and all US Nordic ski fans that headed to Minneapolis for this historic race.
Bust mostly congrats to Jessie for sticking with her dream and Gus for taking a WC win!
Here in VT we were very sad Ben couldn’t race but Jessie, Julia, and the rest of the T2 team represented Stratton well.
Don’t forget there's World Cup biathlon in Soldier hollow in a couple of weeks. Hope to make it there from Driggs to watch the shoot and ski.
Perfect day in Vermont

Birkie done!!! The 10k lap course was an experience in and of itself, as was starting in wave 10…but the skis were fast and the downhills were exhilirating, as the 3” of frozen granular was hiding some barely tillable ice. Conga line uphills were a great aid in pacing as it was impossible to push too hard. I have to do it again for the point-to-point!

FKNA. Good show.
No local Birchleg here this winter :(
Will have to take the meadowskippers for a few laps in the treeline meadows next weekend. Snow is done below 1000m here now. That’s a first for me in any of the interior mtn towns I’ve lived in here in BC. El Niño can f-k right off anytime.
Nice job! Username checks out

Congrats, Laps. I’m sure you were just behind Jessie and Gus at the finish.
Mrs P and I went out to see how the refreeze looked. Turned out it was bad enough that we kept skins on our XCD skis on for the up and down of the entire short tour. At least the sun was out.

Was it at Boulder Pass this year?

Today in Vermont might be it, fucking early spring comes tomorrow.
Laps on a couple of skis today. The Madshus F3’s were a blast today. Short groove, heel back. Surfy fun in the sugar!

Sun and grooming helped a lot today. The snow is still too thin to set tracks at most northern VT areas.

Have any of you ever tried biathlon? Anyone know somewhere I could give it a shot somewhere in the western US?
Google is pretty good at this type of question. Anyway, I thought you knew everything. Any area with a solid Nordic scene will have biathlon

Soldier hollow has a " Biathlon experience" They have a Olympic venue and will have a world cup event 3-8----3-11. Nothing says gassed like trying to shoot a silver dollar target with a pulse of 130+.
Paintball guns are not accurate enough to be fulfilling for target practice.
This is a better idea, and would also be fun with a bow I think, but still, I'd like to do it for real with the real target setup timing etc.
I actually have heard they have a course there, and checked their website previously and found the biathlon wasn't open to the public. Just checked again and found the biathlon experiences page, including the option to mountain bike the course in the summer. So sick, I'm sold.
Crosscut outside of Bozeman has a masters rec-level biathlon program. In normal snow years it seems like they also run some community biathlon races which provide rifles for the novice entrants: https://www.crosscutmt.org/events/co...on-race-2023-2
I briefly went down the rabbit hole of looking at biathlon rifles and...even the "cheap" option is $$$$...
But I did find that there are various vendors (including some of the actual riflemakers) that sell laser-tag rifle and target setups: https://laserwar.com/equipments/biat...-20-masret-set so I guess you can run your own biathlon anywhere you can skate.
Some clubs or training groups have rental programs for newbies - can be a good way to try out the sport and see if you like it. You also might find people willing to sell or loan their older gear.
Thats really cool, albeit still way too expensive. Also, while the laser thing would be kind of cool, it wouldn't be anywhere close to as challenging as actually shooting a real projectile that will be affected by wind etc.
And yea, the anshutz rifles are ridiculously expensive. I could get a decent snowmobile, or a 22 rifle and some cross country gear. Think is, I don't really care about using the real biathlon rifles. It would be cool to rend one, but most of what makes them special, isn't that they're adapted for skiing, but they're set up for the rules of the competition, and to be as competitive as possible time wise. Those fancy backpack style slings can be put on a 10/22 or scoped bolt action rifle, if they'll let you use one.
And if anyone wants to hold my hand and recommend some skate skis/boots that'd be cool too. i know nothing.
i’m sorry everyone, is this guy bothering you?
cmon leroy, let’s get you back to your little gun thread.

freedom
Savage Mark II FVT would work for biathlon. All you need is a sling. You could put a fancy aftermarket stock on it too, and have tons of money left over vs. Anschutz.
Skate ski/boot recommendation...Go for high end ski, and 2nd or 3rd tier boot. Then buy more skis, and then more, and when you think you have enough, buy another pair of skis.
Asnes Combat NATO BC ski, OAC EA 2.0 binding. Use whatever boots and gun you already have.

obligations prevented me from joining the Saturday ski mountain shit-show, but ....
first valley snow in a month gave me a chance to dork the links for a few hours

Why would you say this?
Skis are so good right now that I would say get the best boots you can afford because I see a huge difference between, for example Rossi World Cup, XIUM, then X10.
Fat lady’s singing. Pinecone could kill you on the downs.
