I googled "bokeh" after seeing it mentioned in another thread, then did some experimenting with my D40 and the 50mm 1.4 lens from my Nikon F. This turns out to be a great way to find out if your glass is clean. I saw a pattern repeated in each of the color circles in the effect, took the filter off my lens, cleaned it, pattern gone.
The good side of being a complete rookie hack is I'm constantly having new discoveries. :)

Shot this one in October from one of my new favorite places in Central CA and just now put it up in a trip gallery. I really like the texture of the different ranges in the background - wish I had a filter for the lens. It's multiple watersheds you're actually seeing: Kings, Kaweah, and possibly Kern river watersheds. Edit: I think that jagged range farthest out 1/3 from the left is Triple Divide Peak off the Great Western Divide, but it's hard to tell based on the 5' tall topo map of the entire state taped to my closet.

Nice, splitter! Dakota looks similar to my dog Osu. Same coloring and a similar body at least. Osu is Alaskan Husky/German Sheppard.
