When I was a kid, attendance at the YoYo rally was required. That had a lot more of an effect on impressionable minds than uncle milty or Geraldine reading to the precious snowflakes
Personally, I don't have a problem with exposure to different ways of living. Though I don't think I'll attend any flat earth, qanon, nazi, Trump or furry rallies any time soon.
I do hope that's OK.
But for those opposed to an exposure, I'm not sure foisting those kinds of experiences on them is any way to convince them otherwise.

you are right that if there are public funds going to speakers then it becomes part of the conversation of living in a society and how we spend money. to me an adult in costume reading Pete the Cat and singing songs with kids is not very threatening. And I could see the motivation, if a drag queen makes a kid laugh a time or two they would maybe be less predisposed to hate people that are different than them later on, and of course why that is a real problem for red hats.
Buster, If Robin Williams wanted to read to kids as Mrs. Doubtfire is it a problem? Or only if the performer comes off as more homosexual?
I am not happy to my tax dollars having gone to things like the Iraq War and subsidies for oil companies and stuff when the planet is on fire but I guess we all have to pick our battles and some people are really riled about this, I agree.
Schools have budgets and some discretion so if anyone does not want them make sure to go protest and take a lot of pics so we know.

If you know young kids, those kids being brought to drag story hour don't have a clue that they are at a drag story hour. They only know it's a lot more fun having a cartoon character read "THE VERY VERY FAR NORTH" than with the librarian or old lady volunteer reading it.
And any one who thinks any kid sitting on any lap is perverted has a dirty mind. IMHO.
this is america. gay people can get married, adopt kids, vote, put rainbow flags on their houses, and read books to kids.

I'm not equivocating drag queens with Nazis. Furries maybe. Sheesh people. My bad for assuming folks might have an inkling of where I'm coming from: get your yayas out as long as you don't impinge on other people's rights.
I'm trying to get at the issue of a person being forced into an environment that they're not interested in and one from which I doubt they'll gain much understanding. That's the theme, not the analogy of the environments.
If one listens to what the people that are objecting to the 'drag queen story hours' are saying, it's that they don't want that environment compulsory for them or their kids. And that forcing them is not likely to change their minds. Calling them deplorables won't convince them to vote D either.
As an ex-professor, I think it's unprofessional and tasteless to bring that part of your human experience into the classroom.
BTW, as rerereiterated, drag queens are not necessarily gay.
I can see where this is going, so I'll shut up for now.
edit: I don't think the segregation topic is analogous at all. There's a right to equal opportunity. I don't think there's much of a comparison with the right to cross dress in public funded settings.

Kids aren’t being forced to sit through story hour with drag queens, parents can opt out. That’s kinda like saying people were forced to get the covid vaccine, no one was forced, you make a choice. If it means losing your job that was your choice. The same people objecting to drag story hour are objecting to history, science etc. it is a step backwards for public education. If you have a problem with the drag story hour then you have a problem with recess, PE, art and field trips etc.
Don’t want your kids to be exposed to the evil world then homeschool them, we know how those kids turn out most of the time.

I think that this stupid thread, which is kind of distasteful, took a turn with the post about kindergartners and drag queens kind of out of the blue. It was a post that didn’t really have anything to do with the topic but rather a current hot issue for conservatives. Maybe I’m wrong, I’m willing to listen if someone has a cogent argument but this really made no sense in relation to this thread.
Still on tangent, I’m not sure what the specific issue is with drag, do ignorant people think it will turn their kids gay or do they think all drag queens are gay and that all gay men are pedophiles? Most of the time pedophiles are flying under the radar and appear normal at least superficially. I’d be more worried about the outwardly appearing heterosexual teacher taking special interest in kids not the drag queen reading stories with everyone watching.

We homeschooled ours until she wanted to go back to public school. She has an eyesight disability that makes reading difficult. We yanked her out of public school in 4th grade due to bullying.Quote:

I don't mind the issue and don't have a problem if my kids are exposed to it. I just think that if others don't want their kids exposed to it, they should have that right.

I think I've got to agree with you on this point. I didn't realize some of these events had been publicly funded and required. That almost seems like trying to shove it in the faces of those who oppose it. If parents want to take their kids to drag story hours that's one thing, but I can't really see a good reason for making it effectively part of the curriculum.Quote:
