I would recommend an AirTrim mask. Looks a bit weird but you avoid the problem with a buff where it just freezes solid. There is also supposedly a benefit to adding moisture to the air you are breathing as well as warming it up.

The new skis are incredible. First time I’ve had someone hand pick a ski for me. Zach and Amy at Caldwell Sport/West Hill Shop are just down the road from me in, Putney VT. The knowledge of all things Nordic runs deep in Putney. They go to Europe twice a year to hand pick all their skis for the season. After talking with Zach last spring about what I like about different skis I had and what I didn’t like. The Rossi’s I have are good when it’s really icy/hard, huge bridge, pronounced edge. They aren’t good at all for normal packed pow days. They have a tiny sweet spot which is hard to access. My old Fischer’s on the other hand have a massive sweet spot which is easy to find. They excel on softer days. Told him my weight and my ability, and he he somehow found me the perfect ski. These skis are so easy for me to use.
From today, soft and a little punchy, but surprisingly fast!

Since it was mentioned earlier, here's a piece my friend recently wrote on Hok skiing in WV.

My wife has been out xc a bunch on the trails around the corner. So ghay. I'm jealous. My back just isn't up to it. Yet.
Yay, we finally have snow!

I’m geeked on this, dudes. Watching videos every night and trying to glean as much info as possible. This one has been crucial.

Wow! Is that fast?Attachment 445121
For me it is!
Skied 60k today, unfortunately with no pictures. I'm pretty sure that's the furthest I've ever travelled in a day not counting using a bike. It was a real fun ski, especially with a coffee and bear claw break in the middle.
You picked a perfect day. Long loop? It’s about 40K from Mazama to Sun Mountain.
Damn. 60k is a damn fine marathon.
Conditions here are looking up. Lower temps and a couple little refreshes have the trails shaping up nicely. Groomer still catching up. Averaging 8kph, over about 200m of elevation over the hour. But a top speed of 40kph through some switchbacks, without leaving a divot, is the real fun.
Fingers crossed that we get at least 2 full months more of this! No bear tracks since, but hoping to catch sight of the lynx that’s been wandering a section for the past couple weeks. Wolves have been checking out the trails too (following kitty the first set I saw). Good times.
Glad someone is getting good conditions.
60K sounds like a full day.
Man 60K is freaking huge! I just looked up that Nordic network, I had no idea it was such a big deal out there, place looks insane! You can ski from town to town?
“Town” is relative. The trail network is quite extensive. Nordorking is quite popular in this region

I’m three drainages south of the Methow but have spent a fair amount of time there. JohnB, plugboots and Lord Thomas are more familiar with the locals than me.

Flash used to be the Nordic team coach here. Pretty much everyone knows him.
It's starting to get thin around here. We need more snow.
I took it as a sign that I needed to visit the local dog friendly trail with the pup since he packed on too much winter weight while the grandparents were in town and sneaking him extra food.

My daughter started TUNA this year 2x/week so I've been nordorking while she skis. Classic with NNN BC setup, it's slow and totally goofy and pretty entertaining. I need to try a skate setup though, always jealous when those guys and gals fly past.
There was a sizeable race for 9 - 12 year olds in southern BC this weekend. Never heard of Methow Valley Nordic before (although had heard of Winthrop) but those kids are fast. Strong team, all the more impressive considering they aren’t pulling from much of a population as far as I can tell.
