Not going to pretend I don't understand the sentiment, but I am kind of clinging to the notion that it is a vocal minority so exercised about their porn, and then another segment that sees this as some sign of impending heavy moderation and Epic-skiing of the board. My position remains that since TGR decided this place should be moderated they can't just wash their hands of it and need to do something.

I think there have a been a number of people pretty clearly stating that they could do without the porn, don't care about or don't like it, and/or think we'd be better off without it (which is what I have said).

I also haven't heard anyone trying to claim the porn here is art, but I may have missed that (obviously there has been important art described as pornography by detractors, but that's probably not too relevant).

MG aside (vicious attacks are par for the course here--porn or not, male or female, spook or intelligent life form), I have to admit I have been surprised by some of what has (apparently sincerely) been posted here in the threads addressing this recently. Doesn't reflect too well on the 'community,' and while I'd hope that whatever women are here stick around I am starting to feel that that might be too much to ask.

that's not even close to what i think. i don't give a shit what tgr does. i've been aware of the limits of this place since i got here and i'm still here. my view of certain aspects of "the collective" are not likely to change. i am very aware that it is complicated and i'm not holding the moderators responsible for the company or whatever culture has developed over years and places. honestly, since advres left (trying to remember if that was before or after splat v. jer: the fuckoning) the moderators have been great at a thankless job. i agree with self-moderation or at least the lack of a heavy hand. tgr and everybody here can do what they want but nobody should pretend about what they're doing -- defining part of this community in no uncertain terms. management may not jump, but somebody was rather efficient deciding to employ a timeout. in my opinion, that's taking another step in the wrong direction.

In a nutshell: consent should be obtained prior to posting nude pictures and proof of consent needs to be posted along side the picture (though what constituted proof was not agreed upon as there was concern about photo shopping). Then there was a lot of other stuff about porn, objectifying, rape and the need for moderation of the forum.

In between we had a few laughs and I tried to interject that if people weren't so uptight about nudity maybe we'd be better off which really has nothing to do with non-consensual naked picture posting.

I started on this page, but am assuming it is related to this mtngirl poster who keeps complaining about people posting real pics in the Plea to Ullr thread. I am guessing she feels emboldened by the recent uptick in sexual assault and sexual predatory claims we are seeing in the media.

I'm going to empathize with mtngirl based on the suspicions that she has probably been a victim herself. I blame the other butthurt posters here who are getting all worked up about one poster.

This isn't world ending or rocket science.

TGR just need to decide if they want to allow porn to be associated with their brand.

If they don't and you can't deal with it then fuck off. It'd be a good filtering process IMO.

Personally I don't have a problem with it either way. But tend to think it'd be better to not allow it.

It is exactly how most of them want it. Others don't care. And then there are those who wont risk their cool TGR schtick by actually saying what they might think in Mtngirls favor without it being disguised as a pithy put down, usually aimed at MtnGirl. And then, amazingly, there are some who virtually repeat what Mtngirl said, and then get lauded with kudos for speaking sense??

So many miss the point: they think that the objectors here are prudes and offended, "so don't click on the link" is their advice. Wrong. Porn or nakedness in any consensual form is not offensive, however it pays virtually no role in a ski forum. What is offensive is the frat boy women-hate that seems to gently simmer below this whole topic. One thing TGR has done well, is provide a platform for those guys in the shape of an unmoderated skiing forum. Pity the otherwise worthy unmoderated experiment took that path.

If Mtngirl got a time-out for speaking her mind relentlessly, I sure hope some of the borderline violent women-hate speech from man-boys here also earned them a time out. Calling a women a cunt, telling her to fuck off etc isn't the problem so much. It is equally disrespectful aimed at anyone. Around here, it is how people talk to each other. What is the problem, is the context of the message and words: man+power+freedom > woman+opinion+freedom. In the context of that imbalance, the aggressive words take on a much more sinister meaning. Ultimately, it is another small stitch in a culture that degrades every exceptional female I respect and admire. And another stitch in keeping 50% of the population down.

Mtngirl took a stand. She is a flawed human like most of us, but a fighter. I like that.
