Do people prefer rocker/camber/rocker or full rocker with the protest?
I have never skied a continuous curves/full rocker protest so can’t comment there. I do own 188’s and 192’s. The 188’s are a tad looser due to 1mm maybe of camber and a much straighter sidecut underfoot. I think the lack of side cut is why they are looser. I spoke with Keith about the change in the camber as well as the side cut radius from the older gen 1 188 to the latest versions of the 187/192. He said he made the changes due to people complaining about lack of groomer performance and ability to make it back to the lifts, fuckin beaters. I wish people would understand that this is a powder ski and the 188 makes it back just fine, albeit with giant turns. I have zero issue with it hooking up in soft groomers, just need to make 50+m turns.
With all of that said my 192s have a little bit better firm snow performance and are almost as loose and Drifty as my 188. The 188 pivots just a tad easier as well. The 192 is still a really bitchen pow ski and gets loose and pivots just fine. I’m really splitting a red pussy hair here.
I’m not sure a CC protest would be much fun on a groomer or would offer a whole lot more pow performance. Maybe I’m very wrong. I wish Keith would build a new protest on the old dimensions.
I haven't skied a full rocker either but I own a 192 Protest. Seems to have pretty minimal camber. Favorite ski ever, would hesitate to f with it
Edit: Like others have said in this thread. If you want full rocker, go with the powder boards, that shape was designed for full rocker where as the protest was designed to have some camber. Keith is a great ski builder, once again, don't f wit it

How much snow are you guys busting out your Protests in inbounds...
Seems like the number goes down the longer you spend on them.
I've been touring on my 187's:

Yes, they ski powder remarkably well, but what really amazes me is how handle snow that has seen a little too much sun or wind: They turn it back in to powder. They're heavy, but it's worth it for meadow skipping on mediocre snow, which is what is on the menu so far this season around here.
Skied my OG flat (CCR?) 188s today in about a foot of heavy fresh slop at Hyak today. While many people where flailing around and getting exhausted and stuck, had no problems on these things. Effortless in that stuff, can't imagine a better ski in these conditions when still having to get back to a lift.
I've unfortunately never ridden the current 128 underfoot version with a bit of camber but I can't believe they'd be better than these in the conditions today. If I was getting a new custom pair I'd definitely consider going without camber
They are if built in a 4flex. My 188’s are maybe a tad looser than my 192 4 flex but due to the flex 4 are better at hauling ass through pow, chop and heavy snow. Stock flex is to soft in the tip imho. Still a super fun ride as I skied my 188’s yesterday, wished I had the 192’s tho but still had a great time until the snow got pretty skied up.
If I get another pair of Protests, I’d go CCR.

PSA: Not sure if anyone's shared this yet but just came across these at GT

Yeah don't think I'd wanna go full CCR either, was thinking flat underfoot like my pair of 188s. Maybe it wouldn't make much of difference with the current shape anywhoo. Wonder if that's still an option for the spring custom sale though?
(here's the 188s for reference)

Skied my 187 Protests in the Crystal WA all-time powder this weekend and they are bar-none the best pow ski I've ever been on. They are magnificent!
Bonus in pic are my buddy's 184 flex 3 FRD and some fun Praxis poles.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c1b7dd92e8.jpg

I'm looking to accentuate the top end of my quiver currently occupied by 187 protests in stock flex. Considering going to 192's as a more Cat ski/epic inbounds setup. For people who have skied both lengths: differences? FWIW I'm 6'2 195# and getting a little chargier every season but don't often drop much.
If you dont already have a line on a pair, let me know: https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/...ht=192+protest
Absolutely a killer ski on the one cat day i had on them. I am about the same size as you and think they are the perfect size... if i was only maching open bowls all the time and sending bigger drops id probably rather have the 196, but the 192s killed it everywhere.
We are similar size, I’ve had two pairs of 196s, and I’d go down to the 192s if I got another pair. The 196s were great, just big.

If anyone is considering selling an UL pair I'm probably interested.
I'm about the same size as y'all (and have bought one or two (?) pairs from STLHD) - 6', 195. I have the 187 stock flex carbon for touring, and absolutely love them. I'd imagine the 192 would be perfect for a resort ski length. Buddy the same size as them has the 196 for resorts, and loves them too.
Another buddy has the 192 UL for touring...and guess what...he fucking loves them.
Why you selling Cali-Grown? YOU DON'T LOVE THEM?!?!????
Haha i just never really meshed with them at my home mountain (Alpental). They are easily the best ski in my quiver for bigger mountains, or for catskiing ( and i want to emphasize how good they were and made me ski when catskiing)... but i just didn't jive with them for the terrain and conditions i would mostly ski them on (tight, techy, dense snow where i rarely get to let them run)... so i decided to pass them along before they got beat up from their life of 2 laps and back to the car on pow days.
Also, have some personal stuff happening which makes thinning the quiver a good idea. OG 191 Billygoats will continue their decade of service as my pow skis.
So I am 6-3 195. So same and am skiing pretty aggressive but also more finesse than brute strength. Had 187. Just a little small and under gunner in 2 feet. Went to Stock flex 192 and it’s amazing. Rips pow and trees and carved rails. Very good swing weight.
So listen carefully. Put down the app and buy the protests. Don’t pass go, do not collect $200. PM the guy and if his BSL or hole conflict works and buy them.
I have skied a lot of skis. Still have a quiver. If had to sell most of them I would likely end up with protest, billy goat and rustler 11.
If you want more in depth send a PM and happy to provide more details or answer questions.

Me: Tahoe tele skier. 150-ish lbs. I’m thinking about replacing my old bibby’s because I figure they’re loosing their pop. Pretty sure they’re pine core ones (first jack and jill graphic). How would these do as a sloppy seconds resort ski? That’s a common fun use of the bibby’s that I love.
Long ago, I used lightranger’s ccr “hybrids” for several powder days. Super (mind blowing) fun, but I never got time on them in sloppy seconds type snow.
Really fucking cool.

For what it's worth, I put away my Protests as soon as everything gets chewed up at the resort and go to Billy goats, which I consider to be largely an equivalent to the Biby pro. Less work, and it makes less sense to be driving around something so substantial if it isn't deep enough to enjoy.
Thanks all. I also have l138’s, which I love before things get chewed up. In theory, I put away the l138’s when it starts to get skied out. I’m looking to avoid that trip to the car with the boards to replace my current bibby’s.
The protest is not for sloppy seconds. It will demand freshies and punish you for not seeking them out and providing them. Hence why it's my touring rig.
Anybody know what a 187 UL veneer layup weighs?
At that width itd be around 1lb off of stock

Id think that might depend on the build. My standard build was faultless in chop or wind press apart from the 3 flex. Nothing like it. Still great but i think a 4 flex(at my 170lb weight) heavy hitter with veneer would be stable af anywhere

Wind or rain crusts and variable density pow are a totally different story, it dominates those conditions for sure. Chopped up moguls and such? My knees just can't see it... ymmv.
Ah yes, makes sense. The fatties do that

Fuck. fuck. fuck. I love this ski.
Owned the Silver Samurai since summer and never skied it until today. 208 lbs 192 Flex 4 Carbon mounted at -1 w pivot 15s. Really solid early morning at Copper today with about 10"of fresh in sunshine at 9am. Got multiple fresh runs and 4x super softie giant bumps. Solid steeps. I heart this so thing so bad. First time on a true reverse sidecut. Do own a reverse camber ski with traditional sidecut. As has been said oh so many times - the Protest just wins in soft snow. Intuitive for me on the first down. Even right off the lift. The baby bonsai camber is perfection and makes it totally manageble anywhere you go on a good day. No issues on hard snow at all, which makes the soft snow performance all the more incredible. This was the most fun I have had in a long time.
In 3D snow i really don't want anything else now. It fucked me up. It was so fun, easy, exploded pow on face, option to run it straight or slippy dippy on the tail in a tight spot. Stable as F. Felt smaller than it looks in a good way. Agree the less fresh snow its in, the less you will eventually want to be on a ski this wide. Duh. But any cut up soft chop is equally fun to untracked. Use it accordingly. Someone also commented they count the quality of the season by the number of protest days. Yea - i get that now.
On mount point -> Grinch is correct and i would recommend -1 or -1.5 based on your preference, your physical size and the ski size. For context, I Really like -6 on a 190 Wildcat, -5 on a Deathwish, M118 at about -7.8. Im always after centered stance with option for Forward-Tip-Ripping and a loose tail. Wildcat line being my reference point for this general concept in my quiver at least. The protest is money for me at -1 and if anything would go to -1.5. I could see line or +1 if you were more on the centered stance side of the equation and prefer the -3 to -4 mount positions generally.
