I think it will be clear for this weekend , the earliest possible snow will be tues / wed of next week. Not much though. It's likely to change into the latter part of the following weekend ( 21/22nd) and i think that week ( 22-25) will be a moderate amount of snow.
All of this is based on the collection of data from the MET office and about 5 weather sites including ones in the US and canada.
If i'm wrong, feel free to chuck stuff at me. If i'm right , chuck snowballs at me instead.....

Let's hope you're right. However, even the usually over-confident snow-forecast.com shows nothing at all for the 168 hours (until Wednesday 1pm).Quote:

ahhhh, relief is showing up on the 6day. right on time. :D
Oh yes! (Get excited about 5cm ....)
But on the other hand, Powslut's link now shows sunshine for the next 7 days ...
yeah but this time something is moving in the models as the snow-forecast link indicates. it seems to be getting wetter, but maybe also warmer.Quote:

Looked again at the snow-forecast.com links and the model is quite different now. Southern France getting the most and Appenines - so not so much love for St. Anton. I have a feeling that it's not going to amount to much anyway.
models are shifting quite a lot right now.
the worst(and very probable :( ) possibility is that a new high may be born. :nonono2:
another model shift. colors gettin purty. watch out towards the middle of next week.

everything is possible right now.
some models see it dump(snow forecast gfs model) and than want russian cold to reach the eastern alps.
others make it warm and wet.
the new run from gfs has intensified the italian low which would mean dumpage on the south side.
i guess sun/mon the development should be clearer. and even than the situation is uncertain.
Is anyone going to be in chamonix from the 17th - 24th January ? I may have some v.cheap accomodation in a luxury apartment for some maggots ...
the highly venerable meteosuisse says snow is possible in suisse romande this coming tuesd.......
the forecast keeps getting better and better for the arlberg.
yeah it's looking better and better for the alps. but I'm betting more on the south and east.. (once again)
what did you expect ? :DQuote:

Funny, I have been sitting here all morning thinking that that would be a good tour when I get there if there is no new snow. Can't wait for the report.Quote:

Rappenspitze brings up some nice memories for sure.
Was at Warth the weekend before - you still could get lots of fresh tracks when skiing off Juppenspitze/Fernerjoch directly into Auenfeld.
looks like things are starting to turn around, and not a moment too soon. just got back from 4 days based out of briancon...
thursday and friday skied sre chev , only good snow that i found was in les bains. everything about treeline was very wind scoured, trees in les bains just below treeline were full with wind deposited snow that no one really wanted (except me ;) ).
saturday in la grave. actually had the best snow of all the areas i skied. only stayed on vallon side cause reports from elsewhere were iffy and my friend and i weren't heading out on that glacier alone. snow was generally in great condition all things considered with deeper, wind-deposited snow in the trees below. bring rock skis tho.
sunday in puy st. vincent basically sucked. they've got some nice trees (but la grave's were better), other than that, not much else to report there.
gf forgot the camera, so no pics.
i've just spent 4 days in la grave and a few in morzine.
definitely agree about la grave, all the snow's blown off the top of the mountain, but some good stuff lower down if you don't mind hitting alot of rocks.
we hiked up to the top of the drag lifts and skied over in les 2 alpes, for a bit of an early season workout, the runs down to st christophe looked pretty good, but who knows what it's like further down.
i'm living in les hieres for (most of) this season, that's s. facing and the snow was starting to get melted on that side when we left.
la grave definitely needs a few big dumps as soon as possible.
morzine was good. nice snow, but tracked out. met up with mulletizer and marina for a day. was really good to meet you both if you're reading this!
i was almost a goner too on friday, just after saying bye to mulletizer... me and my friends were skiing back to morzine on steep icy pistes, we were going pretty quick, basically not turning, and one of my fritshci's prereleased. i managed to make a turn on one ski then fell and flew headfirst, on my back, off the edge of the piste, down a drop and into the trees. i really thought i was going to get badly fucked, and hit a log pretty hard, but thankfully had helmet and body armour on. that's the 2nd close shave i've had from going to fast on ice with fritschis!
no real snow coming.
the slight dusting above 500-1000m and later only above 1500m won't be more than 20-30cm i guess.
pretty likely another high will follow. OR we might get the coldest weather since the 80s as the 6am main model run would insist.(still no snow though) but that is only one model run out of 15.
so since my girlfriend will be able to go to the alps again on jan 30 i predict significant snowfall for 29th, 30th or the 31st at latest. ( i made this forecast as a joke when we skied the last time on jan 4th, but i might come actually true..... :( )
just got back from hospital - 4 more weeks of pins and cast. :cussing:
and to add insult to injury, it just started snowing...
:frown: :frown: :frown:
Leysin 18h30 15 Jan 2006
It is snowing now.
Started at 3000m at around 13h30.
It turned us back from our scheduled tour to the top of Les Diablerets.
Get the stoke on, and ignore Plague.:FIREdevil
*prophet*
"those who ignore me will be the ones in vain"....... ;)
well actually it doesn't look to good in the evening model runs.. :(
im considering a move to japan, the PNW, Jackson Hole or even greece....
greece of all places.....goddammit !
A few cm on the ground out my window, we're hoping more up the mountain. Will let you know after tomorrow! Snow dances! Snow dances!
10cm on the ground in Zürich and snowing lightly.
Tuesday morning: still snowing.
Not much fell overnight, but the plow did pass.
Probably 30cm on hill at moment. And still snowing!
definately not lake-effect, there has been real action on the radar. the models are correct so far, its swinging north towards arlberg, with the exception of the alp vaudiouse which seems to be doing its localized thing.
SP, i'm starting to think your way (except for greece). there are much better places to live for snow. why deal with this kind of frustration season after season? fuck, out west they get as much snow in a multi-day dump as we do in an entire season. it just aint right.
