Spent a week out at Boblandia. Had folks from Jackson, Pinedale, Colorado, Snowbird, Utah, and a couple hilarious dudes from Tennessee. I floated for five days straight, pretty much all of me hurt by that point. Popped my cherry on rowing Red Creek, big fun. Hit it clean without touching anything.
Saturday morning put in.

Took the dog and hiked to a lake and camped by a crick. Glad I remembered the saw since a quick nasty storm dropped at least a dozen trees over the road. We camp in this old burn area quite a bit and have had some close calls when out fishing and mushroom picking. I’ve always been a fisherman, my Dad runs a salmon charter on Lake Michigan, it’s in my blood.
Up until about 7 years ago I was a spinning gear, rattle trap, spoon, worm guy. I’m good with a spinning rod, I can chuck a weighted lure into anywhere.
July 4th weekend of 2016 Dibs asked me if I wanted to go to Fontenelle with him. I’d never really fished rivers, most of my time was spent on stillwater. Holy fuck, I picked up a styrofoam package of worms in Kemmerrer (sic) and slayed them.
I kept going there with him, figured out how to row his boat. A pic of me even came up on the Drake holding a spinning rod, “disregard the spinning rod.” (Carelesseithiopian.TM)
At that point I figured, what the fuck, may as well try it.
Now, through the Dibs mentorship program I own property shooting distance from the river. A boat to travel said waterways, enough gear to supplement the catching of fish, and the skills to get em’.
The best part is that my kid loves to do it with me. He came into this season a bit shy in the skills department. I’m fucking psyched that he’s putting it together in the casting department. We got some eats this weekend, he’s putting it on the bank.

Took the Gkids out an hour before sunset. I forgot the worms so time to learn cast with lures. Parked over a weed bed I had scoped out. Rapalas kept them out of the weeds and the hungry smallmouth brought the smiles.

A Zebco spincaster paired with bucket mouths is about as much as encouragement to be a fisherman as a kid needs. If that doesn't do it, they just aren't destined to be fishy I reckon.

My wife and I went on a kitesurfing trip to Fiji, but the wind didn’t blow very much, so we had to do other stuff. Fished one morning and caught this beast on a popper. Seriously strong fish.
We have not spent much time in the Sierras this year so no good trout pictures. Here is my 10 year old daughter with her first bluefin tuna caught out on the Tanner Bank. Hooked 4 life

Hey a buddy and I are camping this weekend in the winds with our boys via big sandy. First time in there. Spending some time near Lonesome and above. Going to bring a fly rod and a spinning rod. If anyone is willing to share tips or spots please pm me. You know, for the boys

lots of water in the winds....I can't remember if the valley/trail up Big Sandy has a stream...memory is a big walk over the pass in to the Cirque if you are headed that way as a destination before you get to fishable water....the Popo Agie from the Cirque/lake downstream for miles is loaded with cuts and brookies if memory serves me and is beautiful water...any dry/attractor will work (shouldn't need a dropper/nymph)...any age kid should be able to catch some fish with a flyrod there....unfortunately it's been 25 years since I've been into the Winds....mosquitoes should be almost gone in September....Grizzlies were not there last century when I did trips there.....enjoy, Chet

Day 2 was walleye. Wind was rippin' and the bite was soft but we still got into 'em pretty good. (No photos but my pb of the trip ended up being 29 1/4".)

Day 3 we went deeper into the Boundary Waters. There was a mandatory portage which was kind of cool.

Boundary waters has restrictions on boat/motor size. We were in a 16' Lund, 25 mph motor.

This lake was a mix of walleye, small, and pike. It is a true trophy lake. The state record, catch and release pike was caught here a couple years back.
I caught 4 pike but this was our largest

When I was a teenager, my buddy and I would often jump the fence, to fish off of the floating boardwalks of a private swimming area in Lake Oswego. We were doing so once, when a boat came by with some old fishermen who were keeping everything they caught, and throwing them in a five gallon bucket. They gave us the customary greeting, asking if we'd had any luck, and when we mentioned having caught some crappie, one of them revealed to us the meaning of life, saying: "That's what life is all about, kechin' a big mess o' crappie!"Quote:

I have never caught a crappie or lived in an area where they swim. Looks like a good trip.

Crappie fishing is a lot of fun, they will hit all kinds of artificials when they are feeding aggressively.
had a nice outing yesterday -- nice quiet stream with great pocket water with lively cutthroats/rainbows in the 8-14" range
hooked a bunch, but i was really struggling to net fish tho (really too many lost for that size of fish!)
either poor sets or just losing contact after hookup -- too many to pretend it was just chance
maybe need to go back to barbed flies, lol
i need more practice playing/landing
my targeting/choosing prime lies/selecting fly strategy is def getting better
i look at the photos above & i can't help think that a bunch of you are semi-pro at this stuff -- just amazing fish posted here all the time...very cool to see!

Fishing barb-less hooks will certainly lead to more "sporting releases". It doesn't necessarily mean you're doing something wrong, sometimes the fish are just doing the right thing to get off the hook.Quote:
