Pretty poor. It sucked balls today but I still picked off a few fun ones for my first day back in the water.
But we have swell on the way. First one in a while so the usual spots will be a shit show. But if the winds stay light in the mornings, we will be finding some real waves as soon as tomorrow.
mmmmm, real waves, wouldn't that be somethin. none for me today, gonna get rusty;)
friday looks to show a bump of some sort maybe.

Finally some god damn “real” surf! Just got back from Salt Creek and it was shoulder to head high and pretty consistent, the shape however could use some work. Sectiony walls were the norm but there were a few corners to be had, overall it was a great day at the beach (even if it was a shitshow). Tomorrow should be super fun, Piggity where you @?

Surfed a spot that doesn't really pick up a south and it was still about chest high, caught a few. Think either Black's or LJ reefs for an evening session/dawn patrol tomorrow, those places should be feeling the swell a little better
In the water just after 6am, low tide nugs pushing through about 3-4ft with occasional bigger set. Bagged a bunch of waves and then called it a session after about 3.5 hrs. Noodle arms
Finally, a weekend with some swell.
Surfed newp Friday evening. Worth going, but pretty bumpy. Still, it was nice to see something actually above waist high.
Saturday I made my first Trestles trip of the season. That says something, that June was pretty bad. The water was around 66, and I surfed from 430 to 630 in the Cottons/Barbedwires area. It was pretty fun, with head high sets, although the head high ones were a bit walled. The chest and shoulder high lefts were really fun. I tucked into a pocket slightly south of Cottons, where there weren't too many people. There were some lulls, but I was still able to get a ton of waves. They were soft, so definitely better on a fishy type board, but still really fun, and some of them would wrap pretty well. I actually really like those types of days in that spot, as it is not epic, just really fun, and the crowd is spread out enough that you get your wave count. It's really great to FINALLY get a good Trestles day this summer. Shoulder high Barbedwires can be a whole lot more fun than it sounds.
Newport Sunday morning. Not great, but swell in the water. After a flat June anything sounds good. I don't feel like driving down to Trestles, but I bet it would still be fun.
2nd half of the week should be interesting. Not an ideal path but it's a big storm (surface area) and forecasted to max out around 130mph winds. Bring it Emilia

Paddled out at DMJs yesterday. Surf was nonexistent but there were two huge APCs charging up and down the beach popping smoke grenades. Wild.

Rog, I'm in Wells, ME from July 22nd till the 28th. Then based from Cape Ann thrust August 6. Flying out of beantown on the 9th, so if there is swell Ill be back in Maine for a day or two. Hope we see some tropical action. Id love to get in a nice day or three, but Ill generally be on family patrol.
As for the real waves over the weekend, a few fun ones were had, but the masses were out for sure. And that thing sent away quickly. Here is to some building windswell and an eddy flow.
DMJ's you says? You have consistent access? Tropical swell at end of the week might push into there nicely, once it swings around to 180 degrees.
Looks like Emilia is encountering a little wind shear but still holding at 125mph. Speed has decreased to around 9 mph, which should keep it in the swell window longer. Nothing big but should be rideable
I'm watching E closely. With some luck, we could see a bit up here in the right spots setting up some combo action. Could be nice.
In the meantime, I am enjoying the bikini show at the market after I surf. Might need to order burritos more often. The wait is forever, but the views were spectacular yesterday. Gotta love summer and youthfulness ambivalence.
5@9 this morning. Maybe a bit of beach break would be fun.

pow whore, that board sounds like a ton o foam. like maybe for 210 pounder. depending on yer ability, at 160 you may want something in the 5'8-19.25-2.32 for waves from knee-head high. i'm 170 and ride 5'9-19.5-2.38 for my everyday board and it has PLENTY o foam with full winter rubber and almost too much in my summer 4/3.

well, 4.9@9 got me some fun, super fast, super dumpy, knee to chest high beach grinders. My suit was filled with sand by the end of the session. Not sure if I would have called it good, but it was water time. Gonna go look for some 6.5@8 comboed with super steep 2.4@12.
In better news, it looks like I am in the market for a new board. Just need to find a shaper I can work with to slowly replace my quiver. So, another board question - I like how durable epoxy is, but have never owned one. What is the consensus out there? Epoxy or polyester? I can make most poly boards, with even minimally decent glass jobs last years or even more than a decade, but it is work, and as I get older I like ding repair less and less.
I like epoxy for traveling, less dings. I hear the natural flex in epoxy last longer and poly boards will lose their life sooner, less flex/rebound over time.
I asked my shaper about EPS, he said the EPS has more float (they say 15% more approx) but it is open cell, so getting out of the water at first sight of a ding is a must. Water will saturate immediately and ruin the foam. He said you can stay in the water with Poly since it's closed cell. He also said doing ding repair on EPS is a pain because sometimes the water in the board won't dry for weeks
PW7, who's the shaper? It does sound like a ton of foam for your size. If it's too much, then i have a board that is slightly less volume for you. It might make sense to do a trade since this one is too small for me, it's 5'8" and slightly less width/thickness than yours but still a lot of float.

Personally, I'd throw double wings on that to loosen up the tail. The one time I didn't, I wound up with a plank. Took off easily in small waves, but didn't like to turn. It's a jump if you've never tried or ordered a board with them, and I readily admit that they are not aesthetically pleasing to my eye. They work, though. I guess this is more critical if you're budget is more critical. If you don't care, and can afford to order another board soon, don't sweat it.
Edit: I just looked again at your dimmensions. I am 6'2" and 235, and I could surf your board. Are you sure about that much foam? Can you demo something in that range? If you are nearby, I have a board you are welcome to try.
ughhh, just took my forward knee to the chin and knocked myself silly at "the rock" this morning. Seeing stars I managed back on my board and instead of gathering myself I paniced and I wanted out of the water pronto, not sure of the extent of the stars I was seeing. So instead of paddling out in a decent spot I just road the rather large whitewater in and by the time I came to my senses I took a pingpong ride from rock to rock donating skin along the way. The knee chin thing pulled the shit out of my groin and now I have to crawl up to the toilet since i cant seem to lower myself down to it, which is a problem since my twenty dollar a night mexican motel doesnt exactly have what you would call a nice el banjo. Infact the toilet leaks all over the floor. Its made for a rather "shitty day" south of the boarder.
agreed. to me, there is no other ride quite like what you get out of a good poly with a standard 4x4oz top and 4oz bottom. nice flex and rebound/pop. only problem for me is they only last me about 6-8 months before they are all done. pop is pretty much gone and the deck all beat to shit from use, not abuse.Quote:

Turns out that 6.5@8 worked for Marina this morning, with chest/shoulder high fun little bowls and no one else out, but me and my buddy. Surfed for 2.5 hours, until the arms were done. Way exceeded expectations. Gonna travel north tomorrow in search of a caine bowl.
Nothing up here yesterday. Anyone finding Emilia any where down south? I head out of town the day before the bomber southy will start to show, so I need to get on what we have. OTOH, things could be going off around the 23rd or so, being in the midsts of a week plus run of swell. If this current storm proceeds as forecasted, we could be seeing some solid swell in these parts. So sad I am going to miss the possibility of G or F at their finest.
