Guns have been and are a part of american culture. The difference is that for 250 years guns were viewed as productive tools the way same as a good knife or hatchet/axe, or a good horse or automobile... but when shit hit the fan they could be called into service as weapons of war. Now guns are viewed as the best way wield power over others and marketed as weapons of war- whether the intent is altruistic (protection against bad guys with guns), or selfish (he who carries the bigger gun wins the dispute), or irrational (must be armed to the teeth to protect muh freedoms against BLM, Antifa and big govt). Guns as weapons of war used to be a secondary use... culture has shifted so that is the primary use.

An interesting article in WaPo exploring why so many people feel like they need to blow other people away. POVs like Abbot’s come up during discussion of the sources of fear.

Some of the graphs are really interesting. 73% of Republicans (red states) feel crime is getting worse, 42% of Dems think that. Violent crime is at a five year low.

Selling fear is the name of the game. I am FB friends with 2 GQPers on FB that I've never met IRL. A hard hat construction manager from East Palistine who does roof repair in Puerto Rico and the wife of a retired NYPD detective. They post multiple video shorts every day selling them fear In the past 8 years it's been first Muslims then Illegals, Addicts, Homeless, BLM, masks. Currently it's the lack of manly men ending life as we know it.

Seems to always circle back to fear.

The dumber you are the more scared you are.

The stupids will always be among us being milked. Got the give republicans and gun lobby credit for monetizing the stupids so well.

How do we milk the stupids for good?

Tough question since fear is such a primal emotion it’s easy to tap.

The boomers had cowboys in white hats as heroes. Roy, Gene, Marshall Matt and Cisco. Their kids had GI Joe, Dukes of Hazard and The A Team.

Extremely selective in my country listening. Small amount of Merle or Willie. Sturgill Simpson for newer stuff.

Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Darius Rucker, Dolly Parton, Hank Sr, and a few others all find their way in to my play lists. Usually right after NWA or Megadeath.

Love bluegrass. My mom played the dulcimer, among other instruments, and I grew up listening to my parents records. Flatt and Scruggs, Monroe, Watson. Absolutely love slamgrass. I miss the Bad Livers. Can't wait to see Billy Strings this summer. Johnny Cash is ok. I like the idea of Willie more than I like his voice. Huge respect for the guy.

I met Charlie Pride around 1994. He was a client at work. Super chill dude..

Learn to Live is good. It's sort of a life story from early adulthood to present and the shit he went through in between.. Songs are good but really best in order as an entire album..

This is exactly what is wrong with guns and gun culture: this man is utterly terrified by the world.
And he seems to refuse to look out into the world without the gun.
And doubles down when given a chance to step back an re-evaluate his perspective.

Kinda odd, too, telling the world how it should operate for his benefit ["girl shouldn't ring bells in 2023"], instead of owning his own actions & reactions in the world...

If ringing a doorbell is a capital offense, maybe he should replace his with a giant sign that sez “yer gonna get shot unless you run away now”.

And Maybe now that he has outed himself as willing to shoot without provocation, might someone be afraid of him and shoot him on sight?

Would this be a good place to point out that firearms were prohibited within the city limits of (among many others) Dodge City & Abilene KS, as well as Tombstone AZ during the late 1800s?
