Cascadia/WA Pow Farming ‘23/‘24

from skimming through the project documents, it seems like the goal is to fill in a lot of the pond and the unnaturally wide flood plain that has evolved (due to human alteration of the valley bottom) so that there's a narrower, more consistently running creek that dries out less frequently and preserves more refuge ponds for trout who are in the upper creek in summer/fall

I'm all for anything that improves the generally abysmal state of rivers and creeks for fish habitat (and fishing) around here but 10 years of closed access (particularly during winter when they'll be doing a lot less work) without any concrete plan to add new access in the face of rapidly rising utilization of existing trailheads seems like something that needs to be mitigated before they start the project

Gorgeous morning out in the Alpental Valley. Paid to be early as it was surprisingly sunny and warming up fast.

Going to try for baker on Friday. Looks like thursday is the day but can't swing it. Bad idea with the snow over the 36 hrs or so then sky rocketing temps? Will be coming up from Glacier and the heliotrope up to coleman. Planning on a super early start. 5am ish. Any advice appreciated for some interior BC folks. Thanks!

Marshall's HerLabs skis are a creeping virus, saw 3 pairs today among the few hundred indigent k00ks in the drizzle sordid snow squall freshets.

Gondolizing by 8:45, canned it at 12:15.
A most moist moss fecund fern finisher.

Empty until about 11, then line creep. Shuffled through fillling holes in quads, burned at least 15 GV laps, slowing as the line growing. Snorting Elk bowl/berry patch never thawed. GV bowl or Pro Course were the tickets.

Viz sucked skankwads, so split early.

A funny season in the PNW.

I watched the webcams and just couldn't overcome my reservations about the fog and bad light. But hey, it's skiing right? Glad you turned it into decent day & now wish I got up. Last Tuesday was good touring with a few inches of fresh for some quality meadow skipping. Early tomorrow looks like the same, might be a good day for a dawn patrol mission if it stays cold.

I know the snow will be shit but this is the only day that works for 3 busy dads! Thanks for the help so far. Staying in Glacier Thurs night, wondering where the best spot would be to stop for some groceries, beers, and bud once we cross the border?

Kendall Market got a makeover so it's not too bad. Crossroads is decent for groceries too. For bud I only know of Green Spot in Glacier. I'm not sure how good they are because I don't partake and my partner prefers other dispos tho.

You don't want to shop for food in glacier; it's really just a mini-mart. The last real grocery coming from Bellingham is at Nugent's corner.

Good luck, I think you'd be well-served with waiting a bit longer. In a month we may finally have corn. It needs to stop snowing for that...

If you're reading this go out and look at the ski right now. Straight up, all the way from the north horizon to the south.

I couldn't take any photos so I just watched. Here's a couple from my mom's iPhone. Colors were less perceptible to the naked eye but the rays, streams, pillars, curtains, etc. were bright and at times filed the whole sky from horizon to horizon. Same over here in Wenatchee. Growing up in WA never saw a display like this, not subtle at all even with a fair amount of light pollution

Yeah, it was pretty amazing. Better than I expected it to be. I'm sure it was better other places, but I watched for a couple hours.

Just moved up here from Utah, looking into skiing in the North Cascades soon, anyone know if Shuksan, Cascade Pass or WA pass are still worth skiing, or if there are good places to get that info besides Facebook?

Facebook TAY is a lot more active since the update killed old turns-all-year, so you may be stuck with that. A couple of recent reports on the website show good conditions in Cascade pass last week. Nwac observations are more useful this year too.

I think overall coverage is still pretty good above 5k. Shuksan from the ski area is schwacky now but easy from the Sulphide side.

We are transitioning quickly into summer snowpack. I imagine volcanoes will be prime soon. I skied last Wednesday on Kulshan and found pow. Hoping for some real corn on my next outing.

Managed to get just below the summit on the Roman wall on Friday. Was an awesome experience. Still going through photos but thanks a lot for the help on here! That is a big day in ski boots lol.

With the incoming weather, I am looking into rainshadowed ski options for this weekend in the Entiat and Chelan ranges like Seven Finger Jack and Cardinal Peak. I know Chiwawa road is closed but I have an ebike. If anyone has info on conditions or wants to join please let me know!

Anyone remember that link for the snow coverage map? I think it was a bunch of pages back. It was super handy and I bookmarked it and now I can't find it.

Any chance it's the WTA map? I literally just stumbled across it https://www.wta.org/go-outside/map

I think the WTA map is just a prettified version of the NOHRSC snow depth layer

It's somewhat accurate, but don't treat it as gospel, particularly in steep areas because the pixel sizes for its predictions are pretty large

What were you thinking of skiing on SFJ? The best approach to Cardinal might be from Lucerne up to Domke Lake/Emerald Park. I’m not sure on the Entiat Road.

Looks like the Entiat River Road is open.

Silver peak coverage is pretty ideal right now. The hot pow was fun around 930 yesterday, guessing the dozens of people heading up after us had it worse though

which one of you skied the zipper yesterday? looked pretty in!

Still great skiing at WA Pass from the car. Telemetry wasn’t working for a few days, but it’s working now, and you can tell it’s been freezing hard every night, so it’s all simply about timing the corn.

I just got up here to visit my Mom and there’s an atmospheric river forecast to hit starting Sunday. Cascades could get up to 4” of rain. Wow. Wasn’t expecting this.
