Thank you all for your kind thoughts but I'm afraid he's gone. Around here there when cats go missing it's usually for one reason. :(
He was a wonderful unique cat with a magnanimous heart and a gusto for life. I was blessed to have him.

Vibes, KQ. I lost my tiger kitty to a car hit and run 2 years ago. Coolest cat I ever met. Now we adopted the stray from outside that would never get along great with him. She was pretty wild but gets better slowly over time. Last night was the first time for extended belly rubs without surprise attack. This is our morning routine before work...

Friendly? Not in that weird cat way?
So the neighbors on the block behind us lost their cat either Thurs or Friday, and came around Saturday handing out fliers looking for their 3yro tabby. They'd got her at the humane society and had her for ~3mos, but they thought she may have been scared off by another territorial Siamese. We also have raccoons and coyotes that roam the green belts close by, so I'm thinking the cat is probably a goner.
Sunday am I'm nursing a hangover listening to tunes and reading the paper when I hear a faint meow...but can't tell where it's coming from. Quick check outside in the trees and on the roof but nada. Back inside I hear it again, and it sounds like it's in the wall of attic, both sealed up and no way a cat is getting in. Turn off the tunes and ask my daughter if she can hear anything- nope. Then we both hear it again, and the sound is coming from inside the fire place. Wife calls the neighbors, I quickly remove the grate and some ashes, throw down a towel and when I open the flue sure enough there's a cat staring back at me. The little girl had somehow managed to jump up on top of the chimney and had fallen down ~15ft and was stuck on the backside of the closed flue. She jumps out covered in soot and despite the fall and possible 3 days in the chimney is somehow no worse for wear.
No shit. Got any pics of the sooty thing?
well thats a happy ending
Yay for happy endings! Sigh... miss my boy so much. Crazy how the absence of one small cat can make a house feel so empty. There is a very large hole in my heart.
Evenings are esp. bad and to make matters worse last night as I was watching TV a mouse scurried out from somewhere. WTF? Had the house sealed up after the remodel but you know mice - they can squeeze through anything. Also could have been brought in by a cat still alive and then gotten away when it was being toyed with (had that happen a couple times but I usually catch them and send it packing).
I hear you KQ. It's tough. Not the same.

maybe one of the others will step up to be house cat
Thought about that but they have a pretty tight dynamic down there. On occasion they would come up to the house to visit their brother but never stayed (sometimes he would go see them too).
All my cats have found me - strays that showed up looking for a home/place to have kittens. For now I'm going to wait it out and see what happens. Somewhere out there is a cat looking for a safe place to sleep and a scratch behind the ears.
condolences...we're missing having a cat.
Great rescue! My gf and i rescued these two little guys that had been about 25 feet up in a tree for at least two days. Vet says they are about 5 months old and probable litter mates. They love following each other around and snuggling up together with us!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b86c1108c8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f49ee6c7f6.jpg
