I am not sure about that.
I have a friend who competes in these, he eats way to much gooooo in my opinion.

Valley Girl try the Crank Gels. The taste good and go down easy. Also if you have access to trails get off the pavement. It makes running a whole lot more fun and is much easier on your legs.
I'm off to he Diablo 50 Mile Sunday, yahoo!
Oh, I love these... not gel... and not clay like PowerBar.

nothing to see here
Good luck BD!!
Squirrel I will try the Crank gels if you say so... and I DO run on trails... or I did... til a mama bear chased me up the path for scaring her baby up a tree... I'll get past the fear thing, I think... I hope... if I can ever not hear her feet hitting the trail right behind me or her breath grunting with every lope... yeah, she'da had me if she wanted me -- was only making sure I went AWAY... but I've never run so fast or been so scared... maybe I'll just stay away from THAT trail...
Ugh, you love those?! That is some rank shit right there. I got a "margarita" shot block in my christmas stocking and... shudder.... DIS. GUST. ING.
I am partial to the fruity powergels- tangerine, strawberry banana, etc... with double caffeine. A strawberry frosted poptart at mile 22 is also always a personal favorite :D
PS- thanks Valley for the well wishes :) I'm pretty psyched for the race. Not wanting to jinx but here's hoping for a new 26.2 PR!!
Just got back from a 3 mile jaunt about an hour ago....I'm starting pretty slow. Have along way to go until back in real shape...Have to hurry though.
I've tried gooo twice -- once during the half-marathon I ran and once training for it.... both times I felt like a post I read earlier today about phlegm being stuck in someone's throat that wouldn't go down... I gasped for air!! I suppose if I ran a full marathon I would have to ingest SOMEthing to keep energy going... I like the poptart idea better!! (geez who wouldn't...)
BD look forward to hearing how you did!! :yourock: :yourock: :yourock:
Don't you carry water on your long runs? Gu is formulated to make you want to drink because you should never just ingest a bolus of pure carbohydrate without water.
In a race, if you don't want to carry water, take Gu (or power gel, etc.) when passing through one of the aid stations where water/electrolyte is readily available.
There was one product, CarBoom, that tasted like and had the consistency of apple sauce. Had a room mate who loved the stuff.
I love Poptarts before a run! Not as good as a jelly-filled doughnut or a jalapena and chedar bagle, but a damn fine pre-run meal nonetheless. I like tarts, too...but that's for another thread...
Being a goooo jong, what did I know about doing it w/water? :rolleyes2 Someone said "here try this" and I did and wished I hadn't... I never run w/water though just got a camel and will prob'ly try that for the longer ones.
Raining today -- will make for a nice outing after work!!
Not much to say besides I just started running about two months ago. I try to run at least twice a week. I just ran 4 miles straight w/o stopping yesterday - I was stoked.
please forgive the intrusion.
valleygirl, did you have an acl construction? or something else? did you have any cartilage work done?
i had an acl reconstruction and a large chunk of my medial meniscus taken out during a second surgery several years ago and running has been just brutal ever since.
i used to run anything from half marathons on down, but haven't run a marathon yet, and i'm thinking it's probably not going to happen.
Yes I did have an ACL reconstruction -- in 2001. Took part of the meniscus as well. The worst part of the surgery was having chosen to have the graft taken from my hamstring. The recovery of that was far worse for me than the knee...and is still in progress. I ran the half marathon in the fall of 2002 to prove to my surgeon that I could. It required many pairs of running shoes (couldn't stand the pain if the cushion went) and staying off the pavement. Will admit to lots of advil as well...
What's your doc's take on it? Have they scoped it to clean out any residual nastiness...? I had a screw that was coming out thru the scar and when they went back in to remove it they flushed things out -- I think that went a long way toward my being able to run so soon after.
Last night's run in the rain turned into this morning's run while the trucklet was inspected... and I discovered... the golf course!! Nice soft trails w/out trees & bears... gotta work into it slowly, ya know?? But I do hate the road... so does my knee. For a rainy day, it sure is sunny out...!
well, the doc before the second surgery (2003) said it would be fine for a marathon. within 6 months he said what was left of my meniscus was degrading. it's getting crunchy again.
i had the graft taken out of my patellar tendon, and it took a long time to get that to feeling normal again. a long time to get comfortable jumping with the reconstructed knee on the plant leg, too. dropping the 30 pounds i gained after the surgery made a big difference!
i've basically decided to save it for boarding, backpacking and goalkeeping (soccer). i love running, but i love being able to walk and do those other things.
thanks for the info. good luck with your training.
watched a fun 5.9 mile race today that went through mud & snow and knee deep rushing water... was pretty glad NOT to be running...!! (sort of)
Kudos to all who stuck THAT one out. Maybe next year...
my 5k time is pathetic. I am going to die in that 10k 2 weeks from now. Death and dismemberment, I tell you.
:frown:
I just finished a less than stellar three miles myself... but it's coming along...
That looks killer, not this year though, maybe nextQuote:

Yes the Muddy Moose! I expected to see a lot more mud come out of those woods but something about taking a bath in the river took care of a lot of it...
Put it on your list for next year -- am doing the same!
What is up w/a heart monitor...?? R&D or something wrong w/your ticker...?
If you indeed broke the monitor, I'll laugh hard. :) But really... 12 miles after work?? Meeting friends for ribs & a beer sounds like way more fun... at least today!! Way to get after it, you machine...
I've been starting up my running again. I still hate it, though. How can I not hate it?
I don't know... I've always loved it...
do you listen to music?
maybe you could play back porn movies in your head...
I sometimes do that on the way home, when I don't feel like running any more. I think, gee, can't wait to get back and get me some of that sweet, sweet porn.
Seriously, though, I think I'm just not good at it, or I get bored, or something. I can ride my bike, skate, or whatever for as long as I need or want. But about 20 minutes into every run, I think to myself "this sucks." And then I just get mad that I don't have money for cab fare. Maybe I need better running tunes.
Leave cab fare at home, you sally... not sure though, if it hasn't grabbed you by now, that it ever will...
maybe you should stick to what you like...
I'll bite.
Registration for the Falmouth Road Race -> sent.
Yesterday was day 1 of training for the Mid Mountain Marathon. 4 months and 7 days until the sufferfest.
SSD - I know you're in New York so this advice is probably not very practical, but try dirt. After 20-30 minutes on streets and sidewalks I am bored to tears, but on a nice rolling singletrack I am just getting warmed up.
Trigger pulled on a 5 mile race on the 20th... poised over the Half Marathon Registration for October... Just... have... to... commit....
SSD - - hmmmm... trying to think of something to help you through it but I'm thinking that there should be so much people watching in NYC when you run, that you shouldn't have any problems!!
Yeah, better tunes would help. And get the Nike+ ipod thingy if you have an ipod. Don't need the special shoes and it adds a nice little level of geekness to your runs that increases the fun.
SSD- try the west side highway path, so much better than laps of the park. also, brooklyn bridge.
east river path is pretty scuzzy anywhere except 80th-110th or below delancey.
Yeah, what she said! ;)
Yay four miles after work!! Note to self... do not get all sweaty and then ride your motorcycle home... FREEZING!! But psyched!!
ok BD... trigger pulled... :)
