You can't leave the Sex Pistols out, you guys have no idea how much they energized things. And it still sounds good loud.
but are you not just starting a job that pays rather well...Quote:

Ahhhhh, I think you and I could probably argue about those terms (along with Oi! and Skinhead Ska), and their historical significance for hours. But that's a discussion to be had over beers at a Summit party, so I'll save it.Quote:

As far as newer punk bands that haven't gone the way of Blink, et al., I kind of dig Union 13 for the fast/loud stuff, and I really like Raised Fist, who are more in the hardcore vein.
Some other random new shit that peaks my interest:
Error = Punktronica - Atticus Ross (former programmer for Trent Reznor), Leopold Ross, and Brett Gurewitz fuse punk and electronica.
Behold...The Arctopus = Experimental noise punk/metal - Fuggin' amazing musicians. It's almost like an acid jazzed metal/punk mix. More rhythm than noise punk, more musical than either punk or metal, and really creative.
i seriously heart rancid. if you hate them we probably can't be friends.
All time fav is The Clash. I also enjoy Dropkick Murphys, bouncing souls, op ivy (heh), and being from Edmonton SNFU of course.
edit:heh. I dated this guy in high school who was in a crap emo band... It didn't work out mostly because i hated AFI.Quote:

The Clash
Bad Religion
Face to Face

Weren't Dayglow Abortions Canadian too? I heart "Dog Farts." And Youth Brigade - known as an L.A. punk band, but they were originally from somewhere in Canada.
I really like Taking Back Sunday.
What I'm listening to, pretty much in order until you get to the bottom (a lot are repeats, some ska mixed in):
I listen to these a lot:
Bad Religion
Rise Against
Social D
Transplants (not really punk)
Face to Face
Pennywise
Rancid
Ignite (Pennywise/Rise Against fans should check these guys out)
Against Me! (Bob Dylanish, but angry and louder)
Op Ivy
Authority Zero
Bouncing Souls (their new album is pretty good)
Sum 41 (I don't give a shit what anyone says, Chuck is a great album)
The Vandals
Diesel Boy
The Descendents
I listen to these occasionally:
Mike Ness (Social D singer, rockabilly, not punk)
Offspring
Goldfinger
Minor Threat
Lagwagon
Distillers
Thrice
Real Big Fish
Guttermouth
Propagandhi
Good Ridance
Screeching Weasel
No Use for a Name
Unwritten Law
Dead Kennedys
88 Fingers Louie
Misfits
Black Flag
Fugazi
I probably have more if I go through cds I no longer listen to...
I found this compilation at more library about a month ago and have been loving it.

A little pricy to buy, but maybe you guys can find it somewhere else.
Putting together a really good punk mix here. Most of this stuff kicks ass, but I don't think anyone has surpassed Dead Kennedys. Keep them coming guys.
I agree the Dead Kennedys are definatly the best.Quote:

Rancid - Out Come The Wolves
Pennywise - Unknown Road
NOFX - Punk In Drublic
CIV - Set Your Goals
Social D - Mommy's Little Monster
Operation Ivy
Lot of other derivatives too, stufft I'm not so sure it could be categorized just as "punk".. Camper Van Beethoven, Minutemen, Pixies
Yep, that is all.
Yes, very good. If you like them check out Uniform Choice.Quote:

Government Issue
Wow. A deep cut from the early days of straight edge hardcore.Quote:

them and Scratch Acid ,who should also be on the list(as well as the JEsus Lizard) are @ the T&G block party. wish i lived in chicagoQuote:

Good Luck,

Gorilla Biscuits were hardcore/straightedge correct? Seems to me they played a lot of shows with Uniform Choice.Quote:

Saw the Bouncing Souls tonight. Very good show as usuall.
I saw rise againt/bouncing souls in november. They were both very good.Quote:

My list would be a page or so, but in the end it boils down to:
Minor Threat
Fugazi
Social D
For me, these guys nail it!
AFI- Black Sails In The Sunset
The greatest punk album of the last 15 years.
What about Dropkick Murphys? Oh yeah and check out Lars Frederickson and the Bastards.
This thread needs a good bump. Some more bands to look into:
Dead Pets
Slapshot
Kakistocracy (only if you like thrash)
Agreed.
Something I forgot about that's pretty cool - Slayer's "Undisputed Attitude." Slayer covering TSOL, Minor Threat, DI, etc.
Don't forget the Melvins (they're not pure punk, but where else are you going to put 'em?), or anything else on the AmpRep label was pretty damn good - Helmet, Today is the day, Cows, etc.
Refused (more Hardcore)
Hot Water Music
A few others that come to mind are:
Superchunk
Pegboy
Chelsea
Volcano Suns
If you like girl punk, consider:
The Slits
L7
Seven Year Bitch
Sleeter-Kinney
A couple of off the wall additions:
The Dickies-The Incredible Shrinking Dickies
Kind of a tongue in cheek punk, with killer playing. I can justify the album purchase solely on their cover of Paranoid, one of my all time favorite covers. The original release was on 12" urine yellow vinyl. Still have my copy.
Pere Ubu-Dub Housing or Terminal Tower, for an overview
Might not be considered "punk" by those coming late to the party, although it was groundbreaking at the time.
And, as already noted:
Dead Kennedys-Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
If this doesn't deliver a knock out punch, I don't know what will. Scathing, uber black lyrics, delivered in a full on snarl by Jello Biafra, backed a sonic powerhouse of a band. They had it all in one package. Jello's legal issues with his bandmates are the stuff of legend.
X-Los Angeles
Dark fun. Exene Cervenka's vocals may be an acquired taste but the skewed harmonies with John Doe are magic to my ears.
For a little context, check out:
The Clash-Rude Boy
Not a great movie, but you can get a better sense of how it all came about.
if you want to check out some newer punk, give The Thermals a listen.
