Too bad there is zippo on the horizon.
We skied at Arpa as a day trip from Portillo. It was a long ways with the last portion on very rough roads and slow going. The facilities are built to survive avalanches.
The terrain and scenery are incredible. We only got four runs which made for a long day and not much skiing. If you were staying locally and caught good snow with visibility, it would be amazing. Unfortunately, the Sponars only seem so interested in operating. They aren't open very much and don't seem to want to grow the business.
I would ski there again but would not build a trip to Chile around Ski Arpa.
Thank you for your insight!
While a walk from the base is still necessary, 3 Valleys south faces 3,000m + are skiable

Now that the temps are finally dropping, word is La Parva and their new snow cannons will be furiously making snow to connect the base and the 3.100 area.
VN doesn’t have that problem, with the base 200 meters higher, and more southern exposure. They have concentrated resources on lift maintenance, preventing the frequent breakdowns of prior years.
News is “MCP está renovando infraestructura. En La Parva están modernizando los andariveles Alpha, Águilas y Fabres; y sumarán un nuevo bistró francés. También ampliaron su tienda oficial y el rental de la base.”
“En Valle Nevado, en tanto, los upgrades se enfocarán en los andariveles Andes Express, Mirador y la góndola principal. Además, remodelarán los hoteles Valle Nevado y Puerta del Sol, mejorarán la zona para principiantes, y sumarán food trucks en la cima y nuevos espacios para arriendo de equipos.”

Word is MCP has shares in, but not control, of Andacor, while they wind their way thru the regulatory process to buy El Colorado outright.

Ikon Pass: Up to seven ski days and 10% off lodging at Valle Nevado.

My Purgatory employee pass gets me unlimited free days at both. Yay!

This is useful to gauge opening dates

It doesn’t matter much what the ski areas say. One big storm can mean opening.
For now though, with nothing on the horizon, late June is the likely date.

Eehhuuggee!!
Snow in the forecast for Thursday?!! Hope to see big depths in the short distance ski action photography from your home in La Parva by next weekend Casey.
The forecast has been bouncing around a 4 day 3 Valleys total of 35-90ccm for a few days now, most falling Thursday. It remains to be seen if this series of fronts is an atmospheric river event or a few days of chubascos (snow showers). Another front looms 9 days out, but that is beyond my confidence level.
Grooming has begun in Valle Olímpico
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ffb2aba3c5.jpg
Now that the coming “train of fronts” is morphing into an atmospheric river of 3 fronts, over 5 days starting Wednesday night, the event is becoming clearer, and the news is buzzing. The main worry, aside from some very intense rain in certain coastal areas, is the wind associated, especially in the first front.

The rain and snow will get all the way up to the southern Atacama desert. Accumulations are greatest the central zone, from Arpa in the north to Las leñas in the south.

Huge numbers for the central zone for the next 10 days. Agonizing over whether I want to go this year, the prices for Las Lenas are way up:eek:but only about every third season there works ou.t Was planning on coming down and buying a car for seasonal use down there this summer, but life put those plans on hold(no longer have my full-time remote job). I guess i'll need to forget about this thread for a few days and really take a look if i want to spend August/September mostly living in a hostel.
Seems the series of storms is somewhat diluted now. But things are looking wintery

This will peter out during the day, and the next front comes late Sunday. We shall see what becomes of all the brouhaha…
You don't really want to be in Las Lenas during the storm cycle.
I had a bunch of buds there during a big cycle in the 90's.
The first week was totally shut down. Then when the finally opened the lower lifts, it was total carnage.
Low viz and pent up skibums, lead to a lot of injuries the first day.
Then they had to help dig out Marta.
They ended up with one good day, out of two weeks.
Forums still seem kinda broken got a 504 error and I clicked reply with quote to Shredhead but ended up replying to the post above that.

Intense wind and rain for Sat night.
Trees down everywhere in the south, 260,000 clients without electricity.
So I’ve skied just about everywhere in the 3 Valleys for 48 years, getting an intuitive sense of avalanche danger. Up to about 25 years ago, I never really thought much about it, aside from some smaller wind crusted cornices. The only controls were on the ridge above La Parva, and Barros Negros would be closed until blasting finished. The ski areas started saying one sentence about off piste conditions about 20 years ago.
Now we have this marvel
