Because they wanted to stay under the second apron this year and salaries in trades have to match. Pretty simple. That’s why they had no problem hard capping themselves this off season.
Some of you guys really need to brush up on the new CBA terms.

funny, mavs odds of winning it all didn't change with the klay pickup
I do have to say I think offensively Klay is a great fit for what Dallas needs, but his diminishing defensive skills along with Luka and Kyrie is a major concern. They’re going to have to win some high scoring games.
Not always, but most of the time defense wins championships.
Denver losing KCP is going to hurt. If you’re a Denver fan you’re not happy about the new CBA kicking in right as you finally win it all - in the past they likely wouldn’t have lost all three of those guys, maybe just one. Definitely missed Brown last season.
Donovan Mitchell signs a max extension with Cleveland. Stephen A must be apoplectic right now.
Will someone smarter than me at the NBA trade machine explain how Klay signing as a free agent somehow sends two 2nd rounders back to Golden State?
And the key being Golden State got an MLE that won’t count against the cap. They were desperate to shed money for obvious reasons- keep shaking my head at these posts saying they let Klay and CP3 go for nothing. CP3 was a gift from Washington to get out of Poole’s contract.
I’d be stunned if we ever see a team go over the second apron twice in four years unless some team like the Celtics are going for a three peat or something. It’s just too punative and screws up your franchise for years once the dust settles. Nevermind the insane tax bill.
Agree it’s insane how the tax accelerates and gets huuuggee. How does it screw up the franchise though, aside from paying the tax (and obviously the contracts). There isn’t a hard cap, not gutting a farm system like in baseball. If the owner is willing to bite the bullet and pay…seems good for the franchise?
It messes with your future draft picks, freezing ability to trade some of them, moving them to the back of each round. That's a very big deal.
But even going into the second apron just once forces you to only be able to trade players on an exact salary match (which is almost impossible) and you can't even combine players in a trade to make the salaries work. And no cash padding allowed. Also, no trade level exceptions or MLE.
It's brutal.
I have not read this, but wonder if there has been a move to standardize players per year contracts allow for trades.

Graphic for cap, tax, 1st apron, 2nd apron, etc. It is simplified. Numbers may be slightly off. Some details are missing. Hope it helps.

That’s helpful, although I’m a little confused by limited sign and trades on the second and no sign and trades on the first, since if you’re in the second you’re already past the first.
Caitlin's first WNBA rookie triple double - she's a beast.
It's going to be a really interesting RotY race. Still shouldn't be on the Paris Oly team.
I’m just gonna leave this to Shane Gillis…

Derozan gets 3/74M from the kings sign n trade.
Sam Hauser eligible for a 4/78M extension.
My brain is broken
Being eligible and actually getting that money are two different things entirely. I f Hauser receives a contract anywhere close to that, it will not be on the Celtics.
Go sixers....Morey with some moves.
Sixers went from maybe we’ll stay healthy to… maybe we’ll stay healthy. ;-)
But seriously, maybe PG13 will help them not drive Embiid into the ground during the regular season… if he stays healthy.
Happy with Caleb Martin pickup too.
Miami is falling ever further behind. Happy to see the Sixers doing well, always considered them the Celtics biggest rivals.
IMO the Knicks are the biggest threat to Boston in the East. That Bridges trade was solid.
That may prove to be the case. See how Robinson holds up. Just glad to see the sixers have a solid team, even if it hurts the Celtics chances.
What’s the over under on Giannis demanding a trade before 25/26. Doc is not going to change the Bucks.
For the second time in 17 months, Russell Westbrook was traded to the Jazz and then bought out. That's pretty funny.
And he will sign with the Nuggets. That's not funny.
I just remembered that I forgot to raise the banner for the Cavs' 2023 Summer League championship. Do I post that here or go back to last year's thread?
I was really hoping the Jazz wouldn’t buy Westbrook out and he’d suit up for Utah. He is the Tank Commander!
Not stoked he’s headed to Denver, but I guess it will be interesting to see how he works with Jokic. Seems like mixing oil with water.

Westbrook is a loser. Westbrick. I hope he works his magic on Denver so they aren't a worry next year.
i usually only watch the nba during the end of the regular season and the playoffs..
im a bigger fan of the west coast teams and dont watch many east coast teams..
as im watching team usa head into the olympics.. how the fuck does embiid have multiple mvps? he looks like the worst guy on the court for either team lol

Jazz sign Lauri long term to continue storied tradition of losing in the playoffs.
meh, I'm happy we kept Lauri. Its hard to find players that want to stay in Utah and Lauri said before signing that he likes Utah so seems like a win-win. I'm also glad we didn't trade him to the warriors for kuminga and wiggins.
Rarely does going into full-on tank mode work out (see the Philly process) and either way, young players usually need solid vets around them to help them to reach their full potential. We lucked out in this year's draft with some great pick ups, i still hope we miss the playoffs again this season but things are looking up!
Also, not NBA related....
Did anyone catch any 3v3 olympic basketball? I still need to watch the women's and men's gold medal games, but damn the games i watched were disappointing. For whatever reason, I thought this event would have been a fun watch and I was disappointed.
in contrast, the 5v5 basketball has been great. I love that the level of competition has risen outside of the US, and there have been some great games like Serbia's comeback over Australia.
I'm worried about Denver's ability to compete going forward. Jokic will continue to keep them competitive, but Murray is due an extension an they can't really do much but pay him as losing him in free agency only would free up a fraction of his salary as cap space. (hopefully try for less than the full max, but we will see). Gordon has a player option after this season and he - compared to what other guys in the league are getting paid - has outplayed his contract, so I'd expect him to opt out for something longer and better paid. That basically gives them no way to improve and they keep losing pieces of the championship team. Murray can get super hot, but they can't count on it as a rule (or on his health). MPJ and Gordon are really solid 3/4 options. I agree with everyone that MPJ is overpaid, but I don't think it's by as much as people think (I think he's a 30 mi. He's improved every season in his overall game (defense, rebounding, somewhat on the offensive versatility and a tiiiiny bit on passing). I really doubt that MPJ makes a more substantial leap, but it is somewhat possible and I think it's what could put the Nuggets back in championship contention.
i might be the only person in the world who thinks this way, but I actually like the Westbrook addition. For several seasons now, the Nuggets have had a pretty atrocious bench unit. Even when they ran Murray with it, he wasn't very good at getting any offense out of it with Jokic off the floor (which has been one of my criticisms of Murray). For all Westbrook's problems and his decline, he still seems able to get something when you send him out there with a bunch of spare parts and tell him to create offense. Not nearly as well as he could in his prime, but he only needs to be a bit under mediocre to be an improvement. When Jokic was on last year, the Nuggets scored 122 pts/100 possessions. When he was off, they scored 104. In the playoffs when defenses tightened up, they scored 113 with him on, and 85(!) with him off. All Russ has to do is lead the bench unit to mid-bottom 5 offensive output and it would be a real improvement. The hard part is convincing him that he should be a bench player behind Christian Braun, who fits much better in the starting lineup, so we will see.
