I spent a winter in Twin Falls 10 or 12 years ago and helped out down at Magic Mountain. Local law enforcement and FS would roll through pretty regularly with the dogs. Almost made me want to take up smoking weed again.

Saw law enforcement pickup at the radio tower pullout yesterday but he looked more like he was handing out parking tickets to folks skiing the ridge road than planning a drug bust.
Sure seemed like the whole town took the day heading into prez weekend. Pulled into silver queen lot at 4 and most of the usual powder pockets were pretty well skied out. Shafer was still holding the goods though, hell of a place to watch the sunset. Are there local names for the shots between Omar’s and Greenie’s?
Thread needs more stoke!

The area between Inspiration and Injun Joe is generally called the South Face. Nice turns to be had there when it is on.

Injun Joe is Greenie's. Official name change a few years ago. A lot of people still call it Joe. So now when you are staring at Squaw Butte off in the distance from the top of Greenie's, you can feel better about where your pass money went. Omar's Inspiration used to be just Inspiration. Omar Fricke was a long time patroller and all around good dude who passed a few years ago and they renamed that one in his honor. Pretty cool there. There's still a bunch of unofficial runs but Bogus has been adopting them more and more and signing them and recognizing on the map.
How’s the corn harvest?
Was gonna ski yesterday afternoon but got stuck w credentialing paperwork. Was cursing pretty good. Can only imagine how nice past few days have been.

Answered my own question. Wife and 3yr old let me up for a lap on the face about 1pm. Still needed another 45-60 min to be prime time. Bumps under deer point were skiing pretty nice.
I might be up there from like 1-3ish tomorrow and probably wife and me Monday afternoon.
Holler if u see the orange helmet and pants on DPS

Had the pleasure of some laps with Gosey! Might of hit the temp window too.
Good running into you dude. Best (and most laps) solo day I’ve had in quite a long time.
Homie even bought the beers. Glad to find the elusive mahogany chair.
Some sun cups. Bring your wax folks! Snow quality wildly aspect-dependent. Superior lift line and little shots (war eagle??? Etc) to get from morning star to superior took the longest to warm up. The Face is fun but def getting chunky and traverses are melting out. I had a hoot yesterday hot lapping the shit out of Landos. Love those bumps for a mini hero lap.
Bring on some flakes next week. Kthx ullr.

Correction. Some surfy delicious pow (variably covering an ice rink depending on aspect). It was all snow, probably 6 inches or close and nice modern density stuff. Based on temperatures at like 11 AM I doubt that it rained at all.
If the second wave Tuesday and Wednesday comes through, could be really really good.

Snowline was lower in the foothills than I expected! I sploded my knee a couple weeks ago and resisted the temptation to give er for the entire warm spell but if snow’s back then it’s probably time to figure out just how gimped I actually am. Hope I’m back enough to catch a few laps with some mags before the end of the season.
So. Freaking. GOOD today.
The face was legit windbuff. Really the whole mountain was. Started to get a little (not a lot) warm and sticky just as clouds were coming in.
You could find the hard candy shell bottom if you tried but it was way better covered than on Saturday. Such a sweet day.
If it stays cold-ish and another few inches drops, man oh man.
Enjoy peeps. It’s still winter out there.

I'm coming down from banff to mnt bike from Sept 25-Oct10. Loop from banff to castlegar, republik WA, and looping down to Ketchum (Mosscow, McCall) and back up over lost trail etc.
A lot of campgrounds are "closed" mid sept. Does this mean just the gates are open, but might not have water and TP in the outhouse? Or closed and gates locked?
Also looking for shower options if its too cold for the solar shower on the truck.
Do some homework on Idaho hotsprings. They're all over the state - that's how we "shower" in the backcountry.
CK
yup. Have the idaho bikepacking route maps with me
thanks: hoping to camp at Sherman pass:
Yup: jungle loop is on the list..

if the Sherman Overlook CG is full or closed,
you can drive back up to Sherman Pass pull-out, take the small road north, and camp at the Kettle Crest trailhead....
if that's full or not to your liking, go back down Hwy. 20, 2-3 miles towards Kettle Falls.
Turn left onto Albion Hill Road. Lots of undeveloped campsites along the road. Be prepared for monster trucks and ATVs on the AH road, the locals love it up there
.
ID 21 reopened today btwn Lowman and Stanley, still Wapiti Fire traffic issues remain.
Special Updates: Highway 21 is now open to public traffic. Drivers are urged to exercise caution traveling between Lowman and Stanley. Personnel are working along the highway to continue fire suppression and rehabilitation efforts. Speeds will be reduced to 45 mph. Drive with headlights on. Smoke and occasional flames will be visible from areas where fire is smoldering in heavy downed timber. Rocks and other debris are also likely along the roadway. Traffic control measures and pilot cars may be used, particularly in areas where the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) may be working to replace guardrails. The area closure is still in place, which affects several roads leading from Highway 21. Access is open to Boundary Creek.
Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team #4 took command of the Wapiti and Frog Fires last night. Multiple fire camp locations are established to support the assigned firefighters and personnel. Highway signs mark these locations to alert drivers to large vehicle traffic entering and exiting the roadways; please drive cautiously.

Instead of the nice packed out single track it used to be, it’s now a wide, churned up sandy mess fouled that stinks of cow manure & urine. Campsite is also wrecked."

can anyone confirm?
good
I don't ride and haven't hiked jungle hill in years,

We're bringing our multi-family annual ski trip to McCall this season. Any local tips to share for Tamarack, Brundage, food, beer, lift ticket deals, etc? I'm excited to check the area out, I've only been to ID (Schweitzer) once and that was 10+ years ago. Looks like about an 8 hr drive from Seattle Eastside, does that sound anywhere close to reasonable in the winter? thanks!
Little family burger place in McCall super good.
Indy Pass would get you 2 days at each which is about all you’d need and I think would pay for itself on one trip. Might not be on sale anymore though.
Good lil Idaho ski bumps, nothing particularly steep or technical but should make for a great family trip, less crowds and nicer snow than Cascadia.
Add about an hour on the drive, the canyon section from McCall north thru to nearly Lewiston is shaded and a tough drive if snowing or icy (albeit beautiful windshield time, great stretch of road)
Sushi spot in town is popular and worth a visit.
Hit the skating rink in town and a local hot springs for some non ski activities with the fam
Re: Brundage, get there early like anywhere. Shred Hidden Valley, after shredding said short and steeps, hike over to Sargents and ski back to the snowmo road which will return you to the ski area. I haven't skied Brundage in years, but on weekends, be prepared to stand in line with every douchebag that has a second home in McCall that can't keep their kids in control. McCall's, Salmon River brewing is a great little place with great service and good beer, typical pub food. The Foglifter for breakfasts, Bistro 45 wine bar isn't there anymore (unfortunately), but Crusty's Pizza is pretty decent. If you can get in at Shore Lodge for dinner, I'd suggest that. Papa Doug's skating rink is pretty nice and they might even have a hockey game going. Go to the Forester Bar and tell everyone that you're a tree hugger and see if you can get into a fight with the loggers (most of who don't even exist anymore in McCall)
Re: Tamarack, that place has the weirdest laid out lifts and fall lines that don't really return you to where you think you might be without having to skate uphill to get back to a lift. Ski groomers there for a little while and then go hike north out the gates across the ridge and drop in where safe, you can't get lost too badly there, every east aspect will drop you down to a road.
Brundage was chill when I lived there. Sounds like it’s changed a little since then.
The Intersection in New Meadows can have a nice atmosphere after a day at Brundage. Decent BBQ. Pueblo Lindo decent Mexican. Both those places are probably still there. The most consistently good food I recall in McCall was EveningRise for killer deli sandwiches. They had sporadic hours though. There was a decent breakfast spot on the south side of the lake rd, in between pueblo lindo and the foresters bar. Rosie’s maybe? Could be hit or miss, when it was good it was really good. I have nice memories of laid back breakfasts there on pow days before the hill would open.
I remember an obsession w/ salad bars in McCall.
Or go to New Meadows and order a steak at the Kalahari. You can smoke ciggys inside while you wait for your steak.
