Happened with a lot of Naval Aviator’s in 1944/45. The US Navy had trained a huge number of pilots in anticipation of horrendous losses in the Pacific. Then the Battle Of The Philippine Sea happened in June 1944 (same month as D-Day on the opposite side of the world). It was the largest carrier vs. carrier battle in history, and the Japanese got slaughtered. The nickname for the air campaign was “The Marianas Turkey Shoot”. That engagement ended Japan’s effective use of carriers for the rest of the war, leaving the US Navy with tens of thousands of trained and qualified pilots waiting back in the states.
@ Harry, thanks for the perspective. Makes sense in that (IIRC my high school History), Japan's strategy was more in the shock and awe first strike category, and the Allies were already in a war of attrition.
Yep, but apparently Barker was trained and qualified well in advance of that battle.
So what. He was in the pipeline along with thousands of others. The pipeline just moved a lot slower than anyone expected.
Landing a Corsair on a carrier deck takes balls of steel, so huge respect for the man. But don’t embellish his service, he was just another GI.
