You probably don't want to have to opt for the joint replacement in 5 years.
nosurprise that there used to be lots of bankart threads on Boatertalk, isnt Bankart a 2 yr rehab ?
I'd imagine it's VERY common for kayak guys. All that extra leverage when upside down underwater trying to swim and/or just get upright again.
Doc said, "You MIGHT be able to pull your bow back in September if you got cut before May 1st". The recovery is all over the place online. Pro MTB guys that can do PT full time.....4 months back on the MTB. Realistically I won't be riding hard before snow falls again in the fall. I'll be doing PT as hard as possible though.
I had the full open bankhart 20+ years ago. I was skiing in 4ish months. Do it. You don't have a choice. Half a year of your life is NBD.

Tested my repair job today on a bike ride. Got distracted and dropped a front wheel into a rut and crashed, hard.
Everything seems to still function.
Dude. You're too old to be crashing!

No shit?
Kinda sore today. And 2 nice spots of road rash.
Distractions increase logarithmically with age.
Was riding a dirt road that gets beat up during the winter/spring. Came around a corner and there was some guy squatting in the road looking at something by the river. I had to move left to get around him. No vehicle anywhere in site. He never said a word, even after I crashed, got up, dusted my ass off and swore a bunch.
So it goes.
You mean he was pooping?!?!?!?
Nope, just sort of squatting there in the north bound lane.
Big guy, bald with a fu manchu and wearing a wife beater, it was a nice day but only about 48 degrees.
This was about 1/2 way between Axtell and 287.
You got this and will be glad you had it fixed.
Figure out how you will sleep, stock up on easy meals and buy a zip hoody that is a size too big.
Are you going to need a driver? I was warned not to drive one handed as the local cops like to write you for impaired driving.
I hired a student and paid them to drive me around for a few days spread over a couple of weeks.
Bozeman cops have nothing better to do?
You may want to find someone who does rolfing/structual integration. I think there are a few good practitioners in Bozeman. Acupuncture is good too.
PT is essential, but it doesn't always fix the displacement and trauma. It's just not what they do.
I used a steering wheel knob, like a 70 year old taxi driver from Hoboken. I made the 8 year old boy run the gears up through the 6 speed. YMMV

I did 14 sessions of acupuncture for a frozen shoulder, it was a traditional chinese acupuncture guy so he would stick me with 18 pins from wrist into hairline,
it was good for loosening up the shoulder to give more range of motion, it probably quit having any effect after 10 sessions
I just learned there's a difference between "classical" and "traditional" acupuncture and the former is what to look for. YMMV. Something about your pulse. And your tongue?!t1
Rolfing method actually involves school and The Anatomy Coloring Book and real sciency things. Not that my mom (so yeah, I'm biased here, but seeing someone locally has made a huDge difference in my life) isn't into woowoo shit, but I think with boomers it's either that or Fox News. So I'll count myself lucky.
Glad to hear you are ok!
WRG - I'm having rotator cuff surgery on the 25th. I fucked up my left shoulder in my bike crash 1.5 years - broken bones and surgery. My right never felt quite right and just won't get better. Finally got an MRI and I have a full tear in the rotator cuff in the right shoulder. It didn't help matters when my kid and I hit skis at 40+ mph and my ski released and I went down hard on that shoulder. I could barely use my arm, and then bruising slowly worked its way down from the shoulder into my chest. Something tore more.
I want a functional arm again. 6 weeks in a sling and up to 5 months before the repair is strong enough to risk a fall on it again. I'm hoping to hike a lot this summer but won't bike until fall. I'm focusing on what I'll gain, not the time I'll lose.
dunno, practiotioner was a pretty straightlaced looking middle aged chinese guy Andy Soo 30yrs ago so not a whole lot of woo wee shit going on
I didn't realize there was a difference, I may have got them mixed up, any how buddy put 18 pins in knuckles/ wrist/ elbow/ shoulder up into hair line, sometimes hooked them up to Tens, leave them in for 45 min, get more range of motion
From what I have seen, every shoulder surgery is more than kind of different. There are a shit load of moving parts in a shoulder that all need to function and function together.
IMO, PT, Sports Massage, Acu & Dry Needling and strength training along with a focus on better posture all play major roles.
Well, yeah.
Mine was/is complicated by ankylosing spondilitis. So that's fun.
Keep in mind that sports massage and rolfing are different, just like dry needling and acupuncture are different.
I think he's tried all the hippie shit.
Get
Fucking
Cut
The lengths people are willing to go through to avoid surgery is just silly. It's not like we're talking about an ingrown toenail. At some point having to scrub turds off of your thumb because you've been using the other arm to wipe your ass for two years has got to get old.
Surgery has been scheduled for a week maybe. 4/19. Just trying to mitigate pain at this point so I can enjoy the next 10 days somewhat. Was supposed to head to UT today to ride my bike....bailed. Shoulder hurts too much. Fucking sucks. I need a vacation. Oh well. Way she goes bub.

I have been avoiding this thread, partially out of optimism that my situation would resolve itself, and partially not to concern WRG.
Basically, I had surgery on my shoulder in Jan. to ‘fix’ a previous surgery. Well, I gambled and I lost, as my shoulder now is basically destroyed, and I need a total replacement.
Ironically, I rode better, faster, stronger, and In more control in Peru last year than I ever have been in my life.
As of today, it’s looking increasingly likely that I basically can’t ride this year, which is hugely depressing at 57. (How many years could I possibly actually shred again, even with a full recovery by ‘25?).
I’ll post more details, but I am in a world of hurt, physically and psychically.
Could be way worse, and I have a lot of other things to be thankful for, but it has been rough.
^^^ Sorry man.
Already questioning my decision to buy a pass at the local golf pasture. 4 times out on the Par 3 and my right shoulder is not impressed.
I’m posting pessimistically in the hopes that I am proven wrong, as I often am, LOL!
How many years could you shred again? At 57?
I missed a summer of mtb in 2017 after breaking my clavicle, scapula and first rib (unplanned dismount from my mtb). I hiked instead..
I missed a summer in 2019 after a robotic prostatectomy (sitting on a saddle not advised for 3 months after that!). I hiked instead.
I had a partial lung resection in 2022, walked 13 miles 2 days post-op, rode my gravel bike 6 weeks later after getting the go-ahead from the surgeon.
This winter I did maybe 20 days alpine, 15 touring and 20 days Nordic - not bad for an El Niño winter, and I’m back on the mountain bike now. I’m 68. Not intending to brag here, just provide some perspective. I can ski and ride as hard as I ever did, but I don’t recover as quickly after a hard day, and I have to work harder to stay fit (thank you Cascade Endurance - Cody’s trainer I believe btw), and stay flexible (thank you Eric Wong, Precision Movement - I use the ROM coach app). It really sucks not exercising and doing what feeds you, but at 57 you have many years of going for it still ahead of you. Good luck with your shoulder…..
At 73 I ski as hard as I ever did. By which I mean I work as hard as ever to go a lot slower , quit a lot sooner, and hurt a lot more.
