The fact that it was the drop into that super gnarly chute was what made it, IMO. The spectator footage of the drop in his comp run shows just how loose he got going down the vertical gnarly chute under the drop. if he slips a pedal on the drop in, he is tomahawking down the chute because of how steep and soft it was.
Good point. Also a gripe of mine is prioritizing putting on a scripted TV-style show over getting two solid runs in. We all know the wind picks up almost every afternoon out there, but the organizers don't prioritize getting two runs in as fast as possible. Which is what I want more than the course previews, backstories, etc - all of which can be in the edited TV show. And start an hour early, make the live event more raw, make the TV show for segments you don't have time for when live. You will get more views and increased 'length of watching' from viewers for your sponsors of Rampage to fawn over, if you have 2 runs for me to watch and rewind obsessively compared to 1 single run.
After a long wait for judging the next rider should drop in ASAP.
It kinda feels like they're increasingly trying to apply a standard TV formula to the broadcast, similar to the Olympics, x-games, etc. Which sucks for a bunch of reasons, but it especially sucks for an event that's very weather dependent where non-opitmal conditions increase the danger in an event that's already very, very dangerous.
I think they are tailoring the show for people that don't even mountain bike ride. Most people love backstories and some level of drama. It seems obvious that Redbull encourages the riders family members to be on set for that added drama. It's a lot like America's Got Talent or one of those big, mainstream shows. That formula freaking works!
I'm guessing they don't want the show to go on after the actual event or do heavy editing after the fact since the news of events would leak out before the show would get to actually broadcast.
Yes, dragging out the show makes things dangerous and have to be frustrating for athletes that really need a 2nd run, like Tyler M.
I don't think you picked up on what i was trying to say. I'm saying do both not just the TV show, but differently. Make the TV show for people who don't bike and build the drama then, make the live stream quick and raw for us superfans in the TikTok era - just so they can get 2 runs in, that's it, get the content over anything else. There still can be time for some backstories in the live event, it's not binary decisions only, it's a creative field of industry the producers are in.
AFAIK the 10-minute window for each rider came from the riders, not the producers, and was part of the overall format shift after 2015 that was meant to improve overall safety. It was so they could drop when it felt right to them, wait out some transient wind gusts, etc. Red Bull is cool with it because it gives them plenty of time to fill with puff piece content.
I agree it would be better if they started dropping at 9:00 am, but a lot of guys are putting final tweaks on their line and doing practice runs that morning. IDK, I get the impression that if the riders drew a line in the sand and demanded that runs start at 9:00 am it would happen.
There have definitely been years where we saw riders waiting for a break in the wind, but this year it felt like the riders were ready to go and the organizers were holding them up. I think sorge was the only guy that I saw wait a bit after they gave him the go ahead.
By all means, if a rider needs to wait for 10 minutes for a lull in the wind, they should be allowed to do that. But if conditions are prime (like they were this year), then the there shouldn't be any unnecessary delays from the organizers.
I didn't know that. 18 riders x 10 minutes x 2 runs that's 6 hours. And looking back on the stream this year, they did run one in 2.5 hours, with a 15 min pre-game show included. not bad actually.
Kinda think they need to reduce riders, or reduce the in-between from 10 to 5 minutes (unless the riders need more time) or just keep on doing what they do as-is and consider a 2nd run a bonus and not a run any rider should count on.
Hardline is more interesting.
It too is becoming more like Fest Series event with giant air prioritized over racing down gnarly terrain. But at least it’s bikes doing cool bike shit in a reasonable amount of time that’s fun to watch and the final score feels fair (except for last year when Bernard got an extra week of practice)

I dunno, for all its faults, I still like rampage over hardline. Hardline is everyone riding the same course, supposedly racing, but really only like 8 guys are actually trying to put in a good race run. So it's mostly just watching everyone ride the same line. Which is certainly entertaining, because the line is ridiculous.
But rampage is watching everyone ride different lines, which are also ridiculous. Plus they built those ridiculous lines in a week, and the build videos are fun to watch in and of themselves.
I love both.
In Hardline, I do miss the other tech portions that have been brought out of that race, but get that big/fast airs are MUCH more translateable than the tech gnar.
In Rampage, as I've said a few times, the chutes should be scored higher, but I'm coming from an oldschool ifsa ski scoring angle.
Linescore being a more major component.
I sort of agree, but I also think that pretty much all the riders at rampage are so good, pretty much any of them could ride any (ridable) chute that got built. So the super gnarly chutes end up losing a ton of vert really quickly, but without any real opportunity to differentiate the rider from the rest of the field.
Just as an example, in this year's rampage, the chute that Sorge and Storch rode right off the top was super burly. But I'm pretty sure any of the guys in the comp could have ridden that chute without issue, and it didn't look nearly as impressive on TV. So I get why most riders shy away from that sort of thing. The best riders can better differentiate themselves from the field by tricking a large air.
Glad I didn't tune in for this year's rampage. Yet another windy day and too much bullshit between drops. Can we be done with it now?
It's odd, to me the giant airs are completely unrelatable (I can't jump for shit on the bike) so they all look the same and have an almost fake video-game vibe that doesn't impress me all that much. It's just way to wild to comprehend so it doesn't speak to me at all. The chutes otoh are something I can understand, having ridden steep committing stuff before (including in that zone). The fear of standing on top of something steep and exposed and dropping in is much more relatable due to experience so I end up getting more excited about the raw techy lines. When Semenuk started his run I thought the drop was not that impressive (cause he made it look as easy as I make getting on my bike in the parking lot) but the second his wheels touched the ground and he reached terminal velocity skipping across the dirt and getting all wild I was up shouting at the TV.
Well, there's an obvious solution here.
Rampage: 2 day event. Day 1 is more or less the same as what we're currently getting. On day 2, the riders have to ride a completely natural line. They get 2 hours to do a little touch up work - kick in goat paths to connect sections, cut out bushes in the run outs, etc. But that's it.
I was thinking Andreu Lacondeguy was a little underscored. But, I'd have to go back and watch Sorge and Jaxson's runs to see if he's bracketed in... I loved his top chute. He didn't have any of the massive drops. Only other knock I had was the 4 variations of the backy/flatspin. The top one on that hip upper on the venue was SICK thoug

Would've been nice to see second runs, but overall it was good viewing, incredible riding, and it was really good that it wasn't crash filled.
I went for a moto ride on my local trails. Caught the replay. The bummer was when I had people over the Redbull replay didn't work for two days. We ended up watching Straight Rhythm. When it worked it was nice to fast forward through all the nonsense 4 hours broadcast and 15 minutes of riding. Sure there is, World Cup DH is much better than Rampage. Rampage is better than Freeride Tour so there's that. I might even say that Crankworx is better than Rampage. More events and better spectating. Better competition as well. It is unique but it isn't the best event of the year like it is hyped up to be.
Fair, but I disagree.
Preview of a bit of this year’s big features.
It just keeps getting super gnarly big.
Wow.

The super skinny gap up top is gnarly AF.
I mean, it's all gnarly AF, but that one's a bit different than the normal huge drop to huge jump kind of thing.
I have to think there's at least a 50% chance it will be too windy on the afternoon of finals for the Simon/Brendo spine gap to go. It usually whipping up there.
Gee airlifted after trying his big drop.
Hopefully he's ok. That dude kinda needs to ease off a little bit.
I feel a bit morbid watching it the last couple years. It is cool if it’s 50’ drops too.
Went to find the video, it is all over already. That was a HEAVY landing. Looks like he went just barely too far, which is way too far with that big of a drop and that sort of transition out of the landing zone.
Brutal.
Rampage jumped the shark for me years ago.
Got no interest in tuning into an event where people are breaking themselves every year. Watched the crash video and agree there was never gunna be a positive outcome there. He nailed the trajectory and still looked like he landed flat.
While I’m on the topic of shitting on rampage, what kind of deal do they have worked out with BLM to be building this shit anyways? Used to think it was cool but now it just seems kind of privileged and lame to me. If it’s on private land that obviously changes things.

Yes, it’s on state trust land

have a former coworker down there, was posting pics of the battleship, he confirmed its 100x more gnarly in person.
Still no update from Gee which is concerning.
Update on instagram vertebrae and skull fractures. “Not too bad”
The gap is huge!

This is the Rampage, it's not supposed to be relatable to old guys like us. It's supposed to be super human super hero shit on a mountain bike. It's rad.
