People used to use guide books. Remember "Let's Go Europe!"? And maps. Lots and lots of maps. Don't ask me how I know this.

I just got back from 3 weeks in europe.
The ability to use data for google maps, getting taxis, plus calling hotels, etc is incredibly valuable.
I used the Orange Holiday e-sims from simoptions.com
unlimited calls, texts and 15gb of data for 30 euro across all of europe.
set up was super simple and I was able to continue receiving iMessages on my US line.
The only downside was the 14 day limit on e-sim. Had to top-up while I was there, but I just topped-up with the cheapest option.
There's also plenty of data-only options if that's your preference.
e-sims are really nice for this situation if your phone supports it. If you don't have that option, you can get physical sims and just switch. But that means you'll be incommunicado on your US line.
What kind of speeds did you get? Esim seems like a good option
mostly 4GLTE, but it got 5G where it was available.
my first experience with the e-sim and it was such a smooth process. Nothing like my prior experiences with buying a physical sim on arrival and fighting to get it set up.
The one trick was enabling data roaming on the european e-sim since it considered anything outside of its native french Orange network to be roaming, but I still had access to the full data speeds and allotment for the sim once that was enabled.
Awesome. Thanks!
Bumping older thread - going to Europe next month, it'd be nice to have cell data for Google Maps, live train / metro info, and Google searching. Airalo came up when searching elsewhere, so I'm looking into it. I have a Pixel 6a, which can use an e-SIM, so this looks like a cheap and easy way to get data in Europe.
Been satisfied with it?
What courier are you currently on?
I'm Verizon, IIRC you get changed $10 a day for unlimited and seamless. But you can also earn a days credit for paying bills on time (1x per month). I think you can retain 7 (or 10) credits to use for this purpose. It makes sense for trips under 10 days. My last trip was longer so I had to spring for the $100/month to get unlimited everything. At least it was seamless.
Friends on Tmobile are telling me no charge for Europe on their plans.
Do you need to communicate via your domestic phone number? That would be the only catch…

if I was you. try to get your local US provider on esim then just pick up a physical SIM when you get there. way easier, that's how I do it.
No. Just data.
My cell carrier is Visible, which is a MVNO owned by Verizon, so on Verizon towers in US. The Pixel 6a phone will work on GSM network too, so it's fine for Europe.
An e-SIM from Airalo seems like the cheapest and easiest option - a regional Europe one covering everywhere I'll be is $20 for 5gb data for 30 days. That'll be totally sufficient for my use.
Kind of depends, I've found that eSim, because everything is digital, just is more of a process (registration of personal info and whatnot) to get sorted on a phone.
That said, if you have a solution that's eSim that'll work, then it doesn't _really_ matter. Just go with that.
Just install it, then delete it when you're done.
I have my primary number eSimmed so that when I travel, I can just throw in whatever card from respective region.
Advantages of Esim for the Euro carrier is may not even have to visit a store to get a physical. While I have not done it, probably some allow you to do everything online- payment for the plan then the esim install possibly via chat and have it all ready when landed at the airport?
Since you are on Visible then they can do either physical or esim for the service, so if you have physical sim you either disable it in the settings. Probably blocked and no service message if by accident you do get it enabled by mistake.
Pick up a sim card at the airport for data, use whatsapp for voice calls.
E-sim is the way to go. Worked great for me in January. I used mobi-matter which was even cheaper than airolo and worked flawlessly. Voice calls thru whatsapp worked better than trying to use my US number
Edit: if your phone can use them I’m convinced e-sims are easier, cheaper and can cover vast regions so are better when moving across borders than old school physical sims
I'm going to have to try that e-sim next time, although since I use a cut rate no-contract phone plan because I'm cheap, it probably won't work somehow.
Heading to France tomorrow for 8 days. ATT will only charge the $10/day for days I use it. I assume I’ll keep my phone in airplane mode, download our RideWithGPS routes via wi-fi and only use cell service/data for emergencies.
I had great luck with T mobile in Amsterdam last month. Service in Europe is included in my plan so no extra charges.
I got LTE other than 5G and you get 5 gigs of high speed data per month other than unlimited. Otherwise totally seamless.
Can you school me on how to do this? We’re going to Ireland in three weeks and have ATT with iPhone 14s.

Start with this article for discussions- small amount of data or unlimited data plans discussed. Physical sim or some esims also. https://www.traveltomtom.net/destina...eland-sim-card
Thanks, guys.

I’d just send my fiancé the number to the local whore house and tell her if she needs to find me I’ll be there and leave my phone home. Then ask her to insure my shipping container when she calls.
anyone wanna share their airalo referral code to get a few bucks and make it cheaper for me?
So if you use one of these esim cards for data, what do you do if you want to make a call? Do you have to toggle a setting to switch back to your normal carrier?
Can report success with the e-SIM from Airalo in Europe. My texts go through on my US phone number, over the Airalo data-only SIM. Cool.
I got a data only e-SIM, so do not plan on making any voice calls on it. But I have read that calls over WhatsApp will work. And my phone will route calls over wifi, so I assume that'll work too.
^This. Is easy to assign data to e-sim, phone to other. Both work at same time. No toggling settings required beyond initial setup
MobiMatter e-sim on both iPhone 13 and iPhone XS was seamless earlier this year across three countries. Data thru the e-sim and web, maps, imessage and TGR just worked. Whatsapp for calls to known whatsapp users.
Switched off data on the regular US sim and kept it activated for normal phone calls only. But I’m pretty sure I got Wi-Fi calling to work thru the data e-sim since I never got billed when I got back home - worst case it’s something like 10c per minute.
Yeah, I keep pushing MobiMatter cos it’s cheaper than Airolo and all others I looked at and I had good experience with it. We’ll be using it again this summer. Shamelessly for anyone considering it who wants to save us both a few bucks my MobiMatter referral code is DCPAS13473.
Sounds really easy. Any thoughts on how much data to get for one week? I doubt we’d be streaming any videos. Navigation, some web use, and music most likely. 5gb is only $7.99.

5 gb should be plenty. I had 5 gb for two weeks and didn’t get close to using it all
Edit: make sure you are only syncing photos and things like that when on Wi-Fi or you can use up that 5 gb pretty quickly if you’re not careful. Turn any data-heavy apps to Wi-Fi only also, and download maps for your area ahead of time.
Looks like I may be out of luck with the esim. I bought one (and used dcpnz’s referral code, thanks!),but it looks like your phone has yo be unlocked to use it. Mine’s still under contract and has a ways to go to pay it off. Bummer!
