I've never had mine overheat but when I do a batch of scrapers, I usually keep the shopvac pointed at the opening so the shavings don't go all over the place.

This gets all the caked on wax off with the brush and cuts a fresh edge in 2 passes.
Will remove fingernails too. And send shit flying across the room.
It's a handful.
if you put a prop on it, it might have lift-off.

I just use the edge of the ski, up near the tip or down by the tail.

Obviously you've gotten away with it and hopefully will in the future but I wouldn't advise people to grind on the side of the wheel. They occasionally come apart. (There are grinders designed to sharpen on the side of the wheel but these are very low speed.)
