Is there anything skiable within hiking distance this time of year? Have to be in MT for a funeral and wondering if turns could be had?

If the Pass is open and your definition of "skiable" doesn't have a minimum vertical drop, yes. There's a low-to-moderate angle snowfield about 150-200m from the top of the Pass that's good for between a handful and a dozen or more turns depending on your turn shape, and it holds snow year-round. It's basically due south of the parking lot driveway up top (so get out of the car and walk mostly perpendicular to the road, away from the driveway/parking lot); you can see it on Google Maps satellite view.
There may be other options as well, but I've moved to lower elevation and don't know what the current status is. That one little patch is usually good for a few turns any time you can get to it.
...and the Beartooth Pass is closing to wheeled motor traffic for the season tomorrow morning, Oct. 5. So while there will still be skiable snow up there, it probably isn't worth the effort to get there.
There may be meadow-skipping opportunities elsewhere in the state, though, if the forecast is anything near correct (heck, there may be more than meadow-skipping, but unconsolidated snow over boulders is a bit dicey).
Good news for summerhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...815fd4ee1b.jpg

Facebook plea for donations from Beartooth Basin. GoFundMe link here.
Quote:
We've been successful in many ways the past couple seasons - but finances have not been one of them.
We enjoy being owned and operated by local ski enthusiasts, and not some big corporate entity. We would rather measure success in smiles than the bottom line.
The Basin has survived many seasons without turning a profit, but this year we have to put a lot of $$ into our operating infrastructure to keep this place alive.
Consider a donation to help save the last best summer ski hill on the planet. Check out our crowdfunding link or DM us with questions.
Thanks, everyone!
YES! Definitely go support them instead of your Boyne/CrossHarbor/Vail Resorts corporate overlords. I <3 Beartooth Basin.
I missed out on making it out to MT this winter, so perhaps I can make it up this summer if I can get my act together. Harry: You better make it out to the Beartooths this year, foo! Place is off the hook.
Bump! Beartooth tentatively is set to open this weekend. Plan to be up there Friday -Sunday this weekend. Who’s heading up?

I might take a lap up to the Pass. Bored outta my gourd bringing back the knee. Might be a tough camping scene for me though. Would have to bring extra ganj.
Weather dependent too. Still rainy down here and likely snowy up high.. I do love to party up there though. Part of my soul, that place.
Im headed up in a couple weeks possibly with TFT from Orygun. Glad they got their lift working. Love the basin. Dj wouldn't mind doing some camping/partying/bbi training with you

I'd like to make it up sometime in the second half of June but my schedule is a little busy this summer. Also hard to motivate with still having lift served here at home.
Really need some redemption after getting shut out last summer!
Too early in a way lol. Road was closed all weekend due to snow. Got a bit of skiing done down low though!

Pick a weekend in the second half of june and lets make it a mini summit. Calling all maggots to beartooth second half of june. Maybe we can get Bobby to come and do some sticker tagging

we were thinking this idea too. will keep in touch as the week progresses
DJ holla if you want to coordinate from this zone too.
also side story but since it's been rainy AF here we watched the last 2 of 3 lord of the rings this past long weekend and we realized Scott looks like Theoden, the King of Rohan :D
Wow, looks like they got 12-14” last night. They might not get it opened in time for this weekend (both highway and ski area).
Roger that - send me a text if things look favorable.
Most excellent - plan on camping off hell roaring creek up the forest service road I mentioned last year in this thread.
Yeah that’s a big weekend to swing.

The weekend after this one might be a good one to hit the pass. Looks like some t-storms are in order for the opening weekend?
I’m possibly in, depending on when. I’ve spent months of my life up there and want to go back. What about Fathers Day weekend?
I was leaning more to the weekend after being that ive got 3 lil ones but still waiting on a couple other ppl to confirm

Update
Pass still closed and beartooth basin's website pushed opening to next weekend.
Will try and meet up with the BBIBTB crew later this month depending on dates -- id be down for a June 21-24 date spread.
June 21,22,23 - 3 weeks from tomorrow... I'll be ready for a throwdown. Better for me to get my camping game dialed (for a gimp).
Boss gave me the 20th thru 24th off and the misses approves. The Basins facefuck page said they wont be open till the 8th for those planning on going sooner.
DJONGO we gonna gorilla glue it up or what?
Muted has to ski on one ski if hes gonna ski with me gotta level the playing field somehow.[emoji6]

Rock Creek Headwall on Monday. There were a couple of slides from Sat/Sun but the snow was good and we skinned all the way. Weather was pretty bad and two guys got lost in the whiteout, last I heard from Carbon County sheriff was that S&R was out looking for them.
Sweet, thanks Will. That's still a fair amount of snow in the RC zone, I was wondering about that today...figured that fresh would make for deep mank, but sometimes you can just wet slough that shit too. Such a crazy, wonderful environment.
Oh yeah Smasher, we're golden. Will be psyched to see you pnw mags again so soon...bring Abraham!
Maybe a cartel from the Big Sky crew too?
We could be representing from 4 or 5 states. Lookout Red Lodge, here we come!
If I come up it will likely be sun-wed (23-26). If I can make it maybe I'll try and rally up sat night/sun morn and ski with y'all Sunday.
I think I can make it for the June 21 weekend extravaganza.
SVS - what route are you taking to get there? I’m down to meet up a few hours northeast, like Spokane, since that’s the route I’d be taking anyway.
SkiLyft - what are your driving plans?
I've been planning to meet a friend out there on June 15-19. If that falls through, I'll change my dates and join the party. I'm driving out from Portland, and could comfortably haul a passenger or two.
Things are shaping up nicely for a KooK Party.
If your on the fence tell your old lady you love her but duty calls. You can cut the grass when you get back. I probably wouldn't tell her you wont be checking in very often since there isnt cell service but hey thats up to you

I have only been down there once last year and skied backcountry off the north side near Spirit Mountain. Never even been up the pass. Is there ever a time when you can MTB Line Creek with it mostly clear and the basin is also still open for skiing?
Most excellent, MrsSkiLyft will be joining if you want to invite the Ms.
Tentatively plan, drive to Bozeman Thursday night. Leave Bz Friday morning and get the the campsite early pitch a tent and hang out for the day and hike around.
Likely ski Sat and Sun, if coverage is good in the basin stick to cable/poma. But also would like to poke around some of the more interesting runs on the west side of the pass.

Sweet. This could get big. I got about half a dozen JH locs and lurkers planning on that weekend too.
I know a sweet spot for a large group campsite. Roadside but well off the hwy. Kinda private to the first group that claims it. River on the other side of about 8-12 tentsites. A few nice firerings. Parking for 8-10 w/in 50 feet. Only a wee bit of grizzly action. Heading up the pass in 3 miles or less. Will follow up with that...
I've ridden a mtb up the old mining road to the Hellroaring plateau above Rock creek canyon. Opposite the Pass road. 4x4'ed up many times.
- Incredible for an uphill/downhill.Rocky as all get out though. Great place to drop a hit of blotter too.
Even just riding the FS road up RC cyn. is pretty great. Bring yer bikes. Roadies? Roll down the pass, that's a hoot.
I will be in designated driver mode. Red Lodge is fun if not too crazy. Fun place to get drunk and barhop all 4 blocks.
Hope it works out for us.
Sweet. I'm mounting some old chargers up for this.
A mag camp would be lots of fun. I'm not newly single so I've got a decent amount of free time. This is almost a 100% confirmation that I'm heading over with SirVic. Could bring a small keg or 2 if needed.
Not sure about the blotter but I could be into some fungi if anyone's holding.
Things will work out well. Good people, mountains, camping, skiing.... Looking forward to seeing you guys out there.
I’d love to, but can’t.
