I had an 88, they're a good time. If you just want something to wheel around in, and you know it's in good mech shape, I'd jump on it.
Major caveat: whatever you do, don't crash it. they're pretty much made of tin foil.

It sounds like more of a budget wheeler than a 4x4 beater (if there's a difference), NTTIAWWT. Its got to have some custom fab to fit those muncher tires (my suspicion is a spring-over-axle conversion), which isn't a big deal if done right, but does mean that there are custom parts on it. My suspicion is that it has been lifted approx 3-4", which raises the center of gravity. All the better to 'wheel with but makes it drive more shit. Also, the tires that fit on the stock version would only cost maybe 5 or 6 hundo (even cheaper?), but would look a little silly with the lift (and reduce the benefits of said lift), but replacing the 31s could cost a grand easy (again, better clearance). This is all just FYI, just stuff you might wanna know vs. the stocker truck, you know, trade-off shit (that may raise the question of how it was being used before you bought it, if you even care or should care.)
Mine ran 3" springs and 31s. It handled fine.
Don't post here again until you come back as the owner with some goddamn pics.
Also, does the gbtw part stand for, get back to wheelin? Cause it should...
I had a '94 Pathfinder SE V6- dark green with the chrome, stick, 31" General Grabber MT's. That thing ate snow for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Got me through many a 3 ft dump in Ellicottville,NY, home of the lake effect snow. I loved that thing.
That said, the frame rusted out beyond repair, and I donated it for a tax rebate in 2002. It was dangerous in the condition it was in, and finding a donor frame was not an option here in FL. Damn shame, since it was in pretty damn good condition other than almost falling off it's perch.
So, check the frame, especially if it is a '94 SE V6.
Based on the first part of your post I think we might be kin-folk of some kind. Black with the chrome for me. Ellicottville too. Lucked out on no rust, binned the engine right before going through the Eisenhower Tunnel because my buddy decided to dislodge the oil pan off-roading outside a truck stop somewhere in Kansas on a cross country spring break trip freshman year of college.
Got the engine replaced somewhere in Summit County and it was flown airfreight back east. Lasted another decade under the tutledge of my younger sibling.
Fantastic cars.
Not sure... and it occurs to me I could still be wrong about the tire measurements. But that being said, I wouldn't be disappointed with a lift presuming the geometry wasn't fucked in the process, and long ago gave up any notion of "saving" money on tires. Will get the tires that are on it siped, and will do the same for any future tires I buy. This thing will see something like 100 miles of snow and dirt for every mile of highway... Those MT's everyone likes for 4 wheeling are like socks on a waxed floor on the first 10% pitch of my north facing glacier of a driveway after it hasn't snowed for a few weeks. Sort of defeats the purpose if I have to chain up the samurai in order to leave the house because it hasn't snowed.
Can always get the cable chains for ice rink conditions. They go on the Cherokee in about 15 minutes and can crawl up our steep driveway when it's packed and refrozen a few times.
I've got a couple Bentaygas...

I worked for Mike and Jodi Timkey at Alpine Ski Rental, and The Boardroom from '93-'95. Prior to that, I worked for Moose( the guy opening beer bottles with a ski in the parking garage in Blizzard of Ahhh's) at The Ski Depot, and at The Depot Restaurant slinging rentals out of a dirt floor basement with just a space heater to keep from freezing.
I skied 6 days(or nights) a week, and worked 5. Every once in a bit, I went to class at St Bonnies too.
I worked with Jillian Vogtli at Ski Depot in '92.
I also interned briefly with Function Snowboards in E'Ville. Never really did much for them, other than a database for a mailer.
It was a pretty BS internship, but I got to see how snowboards were made.
Used that connection to hook up with Device in Boulder,CO, and made step in boots and bindings for a year.
Sorry for the thread drift. Just wanted to see how many times our paths crossed BMills.
We both ended up i the south too.
That's awesome! So many great memories there. I think I might have been there just behind you. I competed/trained in moguls with the team there for 3 years starting in 96. Myself and two other guys out of NE Ohio would get in town Thursday mornings and leave Sunday nights every week all season. One of the guy's parents had a house at Holimont which made for some great times as an underage ski bum in town.
Crossed paths with Jilian Vogtli a bunch as well, such a ripping skier. So many great skiers there now that I think about it.
If you ever saw a black 94 Pathfinder with the chrome package and a giant Salomon sticker on the rear windshield that was me
And yeah, funny we both ended up in the Deep South :D
I'm actually thinking about a day trip to E'ville when I'm visiting family for the holidays. Would love to see what it looks like these days.
Fuckin' a -- The Depot Restaurant, that brings back good memories. Grew up watching ski videos there. One of my first weed experiences was in the rental / dirthole basement. We had the hookup on a swanky house up on Upper Road.
And relevant to thread, we had an Izuzu Trooper we drove up and down that nasty road a few times every year.
Edit to add: I thoroughly enjoyed the Depot when we became of age/got decent fakes. Cadillac Jacks and their $98 cent Labatt pints weren't too bad either.
And to the QX4 comment above: what is it about people from Birmingham that they love a rouche?
Since thread has already drifted....I recently learned that old minis can go right on a samurai chassis:

Keeping the thread drift alive...
Lifted Subaru Imprezas are popular out here.

This one is kinda tempting:

RE: Landcruiser - The LX470 is usually slightly cheaper and most likely in better condition - for the same exact vehicle.
Lived in E'ville to '89 to '92. Taught at the valley. Drank heavily and ate tonnes of pizza at the Depot. Lived in the apartments across the road from the Depot next door to Miguel and the other Spanish race coach. Dated married divorced a girl who's parents had a place up HV Road. Worked in Jamestown.
HV is still a class place. Fall Festival is still a great drunk fest.
Wait, you want a Mini on a Sidekick chassis?

^^^ saw that and thought I'd post to this thread this morning...it was then that I found out about the TGR interwebz issues. Sad!
Sounds familiar, I do remember Canadians, but can't recall if any were named Caleb or a ginger. But, as I was reminded earlier this year, and memorialized in the completely epic class reunion thread, that Sr. year of HS is now 20 years ago so my memory may be the weak link in this situation.
I can't believe only 1 other person suggested a jeep in this thread. I'm no jeep fanboy but for what you described an older 4 banger with a hardtop would be perfect. It's nearly impossible to kill those things. Plus, if not lifted you don't need to be very mechanically sound to put a kit in.
I'd go with a Cherokee with the I6 and 4speed AT.

There was a pretty detailed thread on the build out, I can't find that link specifically now, but the link below is from the same site.

Pretty funny how the Suzuki Samurai turned out to really excel at something that is usually the domain of guys who laugh at it and whose rigs proudly wear truck nuts. Of course those guys are often posers. The real enthusiasts around here definitely know about the Suzuki Samurai. Oh, and if you buy one, definitely throw a pair of truck nuts on it.
I bet you could find a teal Geo Tracker for less than a grand. You could buy two at that price and still have enough left over for truck nuts.
That Cherokee would be listed at 6-9k if it was as clean all around as it looks in that picture.
SFTU, what's your reasoning behind wanting a standard trans? I suggested the 4 banger yj cause manuals are easy to come by.
