Personally, I have owned many Nissan/Infiniti products, and I have had no issues. I currently daily a Pro-4X Titan (Best truck value out right now).
I like Toyota better, but Nissan next for sure. Better product than Honda/Acura. All are relatively just as reliable as the next, with Toyota having the top spot.
Drive the new Jeep Grand Cherokee...
If i was in the market for an SUV that's what I'd buy. Wouldn't give it even a second thought.
Yep JGC is nice. I've driven the Overland with the Hemi, and the SRT8. Both are nice.
Won't compare to Toyota or Nissan, as far as reliability.
I know you said no German cars, but a used Touareg TDI would be a cheap beast of a road tripping, grocery hauling, diesel/NOx spewing vehicle. 400 lb-ft of torque, good in the snow, and (not that you care) 30 mpg highway. Yes, there's the whole dieselgate thing, but it's already got a diesel exhaust fluid system, and the fix (to be announced Feb. 2) is likely going to be just an increase in running that system (and perhaps a 5,000 mile interval to re-fill, rather than the current 10,000).
When my wife recently bought her new XC70 there were a few of the new XC90s on the lot. I looked at them and liked them a lot. Really slick looking inside and out, especially in black. Wife made the final call and wanted wagon over the largish euro SUV like the X5 she was getting out of. She loves it and the handful of times I drive it I really like it too. It's comfortable, has 300hp, high ground clearance and drives better than a lot of crossovers it competes against. Tons of space too, way more than an X5 but no 3rd row, not sure if that's a must for you. Has built in booster seats for your spawn too.
I've rented a new Pathfinder in the last few months and as much as it pains me to say, (my favorite car ever was my 94 Pathfinder) as bastardized as the model has become, it was a really nice ride. Didn't have any issues and fit 6 of us just fine.
My mom drives a Lexus RX and I drove it for the first time recently. I've never been a fan but it had plenty of room for a smaller crossover and drove... well, like a Lexus.
Also rented a new Highlander recently, wow those things got big. Comfortable and typical Toyota goodness. Didn't see any faults with it.
In sum, if you want to to spend a bit more in the crossover/small-med SUV segment I'd look to the Volvo. Except the XC60, that thing doesn't know what it wants to be.

Big fan of the LR4 styling and Tata's ownership of Land Rover has improved the brand's products, reliability included. Not that I'd pit the average LR product against the average Toyota product, but I'd own one. 2014 LR4s received a supercharged V6 in lieu of the V8 without much benefit in fuel economy (~15 MPG combined). LR4s are a version of body-on-frame so ride may be closer to the 4Runner than a crossover. Low miles 2013 LR4 could be a nice truck.

Test drive the Limited with X-REAS. I drove it back-to-back with a Highlander when we were shopping 2.5 years ago and the handling was comparable around turns. We were close to the Limited, but didn't need the leather or Entune bad to warrant another $6k. Full-time 4WD with the Torsen diff would've been nice though. Moving the switch in and out of 4WD can get a bit annoying, but I haven't noticed much bind in turns when I forget (which is rare). If we got the Limited, I would've immediately ditched the 20s for the SR5 or Trail 17s. Very few good tire options for the 20s.
My rec is 4R Limited with X-REAS (or maybe the Trail Premium, but you lose the F/T 4WD). GX if you want more lux.
Deciding factor for us was that we were replacing my older beater lifted Cherokee and I scared the shit out of my wife enough with threats that I'd destroy a Highlander or Pilot on nasty FS roads and Eastside approaches.
We have 17 month-old twins. We've used the third row a total of twice in 2.5 years of ownership. Though I'd imagine that changes if we keep the truck for as long as I think we will and haul older children. Bummer is that you lose quite a bit of interior space with the raised cargo area the seat folds into. Thule box was/is mandatory, IMO.

Your wife needs space right? If you want her to be able to comfortably bring home a doomsday shelter's amount of shit from Costco without suffering the embarrassing stares of other moms in more capable SUVs then you should consider adding a couple Thule boxes. One for the roof and another for the hood where it's easily accessible for the fairer sex. This also doubles as a dog carrier if you have pets.
Do not let her pick out her own stickers to put on the boxes though. You know what combination of 8" sticky vinyl will get the right political and social messages across that will allow your family to cruise through any part of town, or forest road, with ease.
Back to needing space, are you sure a 3rd row will cut it? Maybe consider putting a metal platform cargo carrier on the rear trailer hitch (you're getting a hitch right?) and weld some lawn chairs to it. 4th row motherfucker!

It sounds like she really wants a truckesque thing but look at the Acura TSX wagon. Good looking, pretty luxe, fun enough to drive, reliable, as much or more cargo space than many midsize SUVs.
You should definitely buy her a really expensive car since she crashes into shit all the time.

Went back to a 2014 highlander and its bombproof. The 4R is for small people. Im 6'3 220lbs and ther is 0 room in either width or head height compared to the highlander. Rear seat is even worse. Once again.... JD Powers ranked the Murano over the Highlander for the Mid-Size SUV dependability ranking. They ranked the GX460 as the best for Premium Mid Size.
I would still get a Highlander over a Murano/Pathfinder, but to say they are not dependable is incorrect.
Infiniti and Nissan all use CVTs across their line. Any large failures on Infiniti transmissions? It's the same thing. CVTs are a garbage transmission, which is the problem, but they work.

You put it in 4wd which locks the center diff rather than in auto which uses a clutch to vary the torque sent to the front wheels. All vehicles that have a locked center diff will bind in turns. The longer the wheelbase the worse it is. It is made for real work, not getting in and out of the starbucks parking lot.
This is also why a 4runner is a less than ideal choice for most folks even if it is a great vehicle. (yes the Limited has a sweet torsen diff but most people don't buy them)

The fact that Nissan hasn't had a major recall shows where their heads are at - in the sand. Thankfully we were able to trade in this liability and rid our family of this DANGEROUS vehicle and also took on a huge financial hit on this vehicle. We tried the route of going to Nissan corporate when after 8,000 miles our first transmission went and that got us absolutely no where other than more frustration. They didnt seem to care that a brand new vehicle was going into the shop for a transmission! When I went on-line to Edmunds and other car review websites I kicked myself for not reading up on this lemon first before deciding to buy it for our family. Nissan in SC apologized for the issues we were having but said in order for it to be refunded, or considered a lemon, we would need to have this issue happen 3 or more times!!!! I guess driving down the highway at 55mph and the vehicle shaking and shuttering violently is not a concern for their paying customers and they must think we have more free time on our hands to spend it driving to the dealership to fix a car that was less than a year old. Please learn from all these unfortunate circumstances that others have gone through as well. Nissan wants your money and they are not concerned with their customers safety.
Post 2 Vanessa Leeson We bought a pathfinder February 2014 and it's now on its 3rd cvt transmission - who knows how long this one will last. We've only done 50000kms. I doubt I will get another and considering we waited so long for this new model to come out. All they gave us was two years extra warranty. We live in the rural area and need a reliable car and my husband wouldn't let me buy a 'jeep' - it would have been no worse!
Post 3-Shannon Starr Ours is in the shop...again. CVT issues. This car is a ticking time bomb! Third model year and Nissan still has not resolved the issue! They just keep selling a car that is going to fail! Having a car essentially go into neutral while you are driving is a huge safety issue!! This thing is getting traded in. Shame on Nissan for continuing to sell a vehicle with a safety issue for 3 years!!! Unbelievable!!!

Post 5-Margaret Elliott I bought a brand new Nissan Pathfinder in June 2015 have only driven it for 11 days and then the CVT transmission died on the 1.7.2015 and the car had to be transported at my cost $5580 as Nissan roadside assist does not HELP back from Broome WA to Sydney NSW
Today is 10.8.2015 day 41 and I still have no idea when I will have it repaired as the Nissan dealer repairing the car at Tuncurry/Forster NSW says they are waiting for parts that will not arrive till late this month and then they can start to repair the car
So anyone wanting to buy a new Pathfinder BEWARE you may own one but not drive one

I have a 2006 Sequoia and my wife drives a 2010 Pilot. I fucking love my rig, and coming from a 4 door truck, I find it practically nimble to drive, but most would find it large and unwieldy. If you need a shitton of space it's perfect, I can sleep in it with 3rd row seats removed and middle seats tumbled forward. We have 2 large dogs and 1 small human, so the extra space in the cargo area is welcome (I removed the 3rd row). But the Pilot is still plenty roomy for most uses; we've managed to go on 12 hour drives with all of the beasts and luggage in the car.
So does the Terminator. But go ahead and look at the Volvo if you want to skimp in the safety department.Quote:
