Agreed, the Grove is silly, silly I tell ya. The Mediterranean Deli isn't bad either, located at 39th and State, give em a try sometime. (Although, the sandwiches are a bit smaller and more expensive lately.)Quote:

Lately I just go and buy stuff from the deli at Wild Oats. Where the employees consistently manage to give me what I ordered, which I appreciate. The Einstein's next to my office gets frequented too...
while nearing a TKO for being a chain, fontano's isn't too bad (right across from chipotle 16/Cali). The bread is too hard (by just a hair) but their combo sammy with provo & hot peppers is mass mess good.
salvaggios/snarfs: truely excellent eateries.
Pickle aint' bad just not good.
Heidie's does indeed suck hippie cock.
Vote #2 for Togo's, if there's one near you.
If there isn't, my pick is for Port o' Subs over Subway or Quiznos or Blimpie or Schlotzky.

Far, far better, around the corner on 17th Street is Mendelson's, owned by a true blue New Yorker. First time I went in there and ordered a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a kaiser roll, the dude looked right at me and knew I was from NY. Parisi Bakery on Mott Street in Little Italy. Used to live two blocks from there, the Godfather was a fine sandwich. Not to be confused with the Parisi Bake shop on Mott above Houston, which is just where they make all their bread.

In Portland the sandwich scene is such shit that we just eat burritos instead. And those have to come from the east side or Hillsboro, or they suck. The best quickie eat around here, on the west side, is pizza (schmizza or hot lips) or indian from the roach coach

Pinner, you can't really compare mendleson's to fontanos they're totally different. I do like mendy's (actually, for whatever reason (beer) I like the NYD on 17th more = same place) and they do have good deli sammys but no eyetalian style. try the combo, you will like it (italian sausage and italian beef, get it with the hot peppers and provolone cheese).
Plus, mendy's is spendy. Ouch.
Other great big jewish sammys = NY Deli News or the NY Bagel Deli (both between 25 & Tamarac)

Other sandwich places that don't suck Tony Capputo's in SLC. Granato's in SLC. And as far as chains go...Blimpie rocks the house over subway and quiznos. The Blimpies Best rocks my world. I usually order the foot long and don't stop for a breath until it's done. Then I hurt for some time.
