pink edge brite is back, so put some on a Partridge Bartleet hook for a Fly du Jour with a wing that may or may not be from north of the border

^ I've got everything in the mail to tie up some of those as well as a bunch of other "summer" steelhead flies.
For now, I used some materials I already had to tie up what is probably more of a "winter" fly but I've heard these can work well all year.

and I'm probably going to fish a high and slightly off color river this weekend and I didn't have much white in the box

My first ever hand-tied flies on a vice,
On a Cabelas $35 fly tying tool set, made in India.

Worms and eggs.
I caught a lot of trout on these believe it or not....but...
I must of lost three dozen or more of this pattern to the river bottoms and trees last spring,
I will next season again I imagine.
So it's already paid for itself.
Anyway, these are a cool way to learn the basics.
Can't wait to start learning more patterns.
You're right!
I would have melted the ends with a lighter, couldn't find one.
I'll do it now that I'm home.
(I tied these at work, couldn't wait)
I need a better egg veil too. the nylon stuff I bought is too stiff.
I'm addicted now to this too...great.
My first fishing was with nymphs. Thats how i learned!
Roll casting the blue this May with a thing-a-ma-bobber and worms/eggs/shrimps.
Learned to false cast and tie knots and fight fish while flinging nymph rigs this early season.
Dry flies are more fun to to use, sure, but I'm a fishing jong so I'm just learning about it all, and loving every minute no matter what it is.
catching fish is cool.
Lost my only two Pat's rubber-legs today on the Colo River to hungry Browns, I wish I had brought more. That seems like a simple pattern to tie.
time for another attempt at catching those fish that eat weird, flashy flies. Had to tie some in colors that I didn't have much of, just in case.

Nice idea!
Deer hair can be a real pain. This is my first hair head that has come out not looking like a total mess.
Looks good to me, using a razor blade to trim it? That made the biggest difference for shaping muddlers and the like.
Yup, that made a huge difference. Got some thin ones that flex and can be bent easily. Makes it so much easier to shape the head.

there was some talk a little while back about a swap. I'm into it if anyone else is.
nice stuff!
makes me want to tie something up right now
how did this thread go dormant?!
got a vice for xmas that I finally got around to using
I kept it simple for the first fly

as noted in the OP, materials ain't cheap. i think I've got most of the basic stuff and can tie a many patterns with what I've got... as long as they're red, white, or pink
last week I found out a local creek not 10 minutes from the office has muskies in it. I'm going to need a bigger box

Use less hair.
Been messing around at the fly tying bench a bit lately. I'm headed to Africa in a couple weeks. It's not a fishing trip but I found out that the GT fishing is supposed to be really good in one of the spots we are staying on the coast. Might as well throw some feather missiles at 'em while I'm there.

duly noted. I was having trouble getting the hair on the big fly to stand up and achieve the volume I was after, which equaled moar hair. any tips? I keep forgetting to tie the hair in backwards and pull it back, I think that would probably work best for minimal hair and maximum splay.
here's a slight variation of a fly I've had great success with for pike and bluefish. it will be interesting to see if the wire has any affect on bites

there are a couple ways to add bulk without adding a ton of material. one thing you could do is prop up the bucktail with either a dubbing ball behind it or something like polar chenille. tying it in facing forward and then bending it back works really well too. less is almost always more.

those on the right weedless?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using TGR Forums mobile app
doesn't look like it. that fox hair or marabou or whatever it is won't do much to keep weeds out.

I like this ones chances of getting bit

such good action on this one, felt weird tying it out at our troot camp though
Attachment 211742
No, not weedless. But they ride hook up, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
The one on the left is trouser worm, found here: http://www.flycarpin.com/2011/03/mct...carp-worm.html
I've started tying those in black as well, for murkier water.
Right is my attempt at Zimmerman's Backstabber. I have issues with the hackle, and I'm just using what I have which is not what he calls for. But, hey, they work. http://www.flycarpin.com/2011/02/zim...-carp-fly.html
these are just too fun to tie

sand eel
Attachment 236679
I really think all of that works but thanx for idea!
Very Nice. I will have to tie up a few of these for stripers on the flats. I had been using gummy's large enough to resemble sand eels but I really like the e-z body wrap around look. The sand eel pattern I have been throwing without the e-z body never seemed to get much attention in shallow water.
Last year I went to an awesome local fly fishing convention and a guy by the name of Rich Murphy had a booth dedicated to striper fishing. I walked out with his book, "Fly Fishing for Striped Bass", and haven't even had the time to read it cover to cover yet. There is so much information packed into it I'll admit to being slightly overwhelmed.
Anyway, there is a chapter devoted to patterns and that's where I found that eel pattern. To paraphrase, the body tubing's main purpose is to keep the front portion of the fly rigid. If you've ever paid attention to the way sand eels swim, I hadn't, their heads remain virtually stationary compared to the rest of their body when swimming. Will report back with results after this weekend.
I made a wooly bugger

Cool!
Nice to see the thread pop up again. Unfortunately, my tying gear is buried.
