Get a decent setup (great advice already posted) and focus on learning to cast properly. This way you won't develop bad habits right from the start. A lesson or two is probably the best place to invest. Practice knots. Then forget all the other crap and go fishing! Get the hell away from everyone, stumble up canyons no one in their right mind would ever go in, tie on flies that look like hell, and figure it out yourself. To me, that's the fun of fly fishing, and being observant will let the fish teach you the rest.

After skiing this storm snow we are getting I would do just about anything to get in the salt or even sit at a beach bar and suck down cold beers.
Also...try to find something online that's local to CA, being you're in SF...as in SanFrancisco...y/n? You can get a feel to what in-staters fish for and where to go...both fresh and saltwater. You must have some shops closeby(= very nice!!) that will help you out with any casting issues....in the flesh, not just talking online...along with being able to stop in and get some tips where certain fish are and what their meals consist of,,,

^^That's a tough thing, in SF(yes, San Francisco). There aren't really any "local" shops. You can drive an hour north to Outdoor Pro Shop, where the fly fishing department is maybe 5% of the store, and hope the fly guy is working (he actually rocks). California Fly Shop is at least a 90 minute train ride, plus a fifteen minute bike ride. Kiene is the best I've seen, but once you drive to Sac, you gotta deal with traffic to the other side of town. Leland shut down in the city, and when I went to their shop, looking for help before a salt trip, they said they are mostly online now, and to call such and such and he'd mail everything to me from their SF warehouse. That's not buying local. I haven't tried to get to the shop in San Pablo by bus, but it's not life-changing, anyway.
I have toyed with the idea of opening a mobile fly shop. We come to you, etc. it just hasn't launched.
I guess what I'm saying is, I have no shame buying fly gear off eBay. At least until my car is fixed.
George Revel has a new little shop inside Wingtip in downtown SF called Lost Coast outfitters. Very small startup but he's a super solid dude for advice and excellent casting guru if you're getting going.
I hear Kiene's has gone way downhill since the old manager left :wink:
is there any instruction associated with the casting ponds in GGP?
bay area is a retail wasteland for fly gear.
Hugh, George Revel who owns Lost Coast is president of the GGP. He's been doing a lot of instructional stuff out there.
Got it BS720...understand where you're coming from. Plenty of good stuff online..like everything just have to hunt it down...and snapt's info, including Mike Lawson(Henry's Fork Anglers). Good stuff from Mike & crew online.

GGP has a free day of instruction each month. I'm walking distance, so I practice regularly, but have yet to attend an instructional day.
I haven't heard of wingtip, but I'll look it up.
Not that people care but I ended up picking up a Scott A4 5wt with a Redington Rise. Let the games begin.
