SLC Eats

The weekend didn't turn out as I had originally planned. My wife picked me up at the airport on Friday and said we had to head up to the St. Regis in Deer Valley to meet the fam and would be staying up there all weekend. We didn't know why at the time but as we came to find out it was to have everyone together for my (future) brother-in-law to propose to my youngest sister.

So we grabbed an early dinner at Red Iguana before heading up to PC. I love mole and damn did this place deliver! Went with a split between the Negro and Poblano. Also had half a banh mi that my wife picked up earlier from Oh Mai and that was pretty effin good too!

Did dinner at the Waldorf Astoria later that night, and Stein Eriksen Lodge Saturday - both were great - with a late night bite at Silver in town - nice bites there. Other than that just enjoyed the room at the St Regis and ordered a lot of room service to go with the crapton of champagne we were drinking.

My wife stayed in town for the week on business and is slated to go to Del Mar al Lago tomorrow night with some coworkers. Have to say I'm pretty jealous from what I saw online.

I'm headed back in November and will be in SLC the full time so I'm keeping this thread close, and making up for lost opportunites. That and I have to hook up with F*#k You Cat for some beers at the Porcupine.

I sent RideIt a PM thanking him, don't miss Del mar al lago. Saw it in this thread, suggested to the gf we go sometime, her birthday was last friday, she picked me up after a long week working in PDX and we went right there, we had 2 of the civeche samplers and holy shit amazing. I love seafood, having grown up in eastern MA we always had good fish, this place was spectacular. Huge portion warning!

travelling with a 6 year old changes things.
No indian, no curry, no Peruvian, etc...
But there is an upside!
I found a Mexi joint with possibly the HUGEST portions I have ever seen at one of these 24 hr. type joints.

I had an Adobada plate for $7.00 that could have fed three, easily. huge pile of great food!
Ben's Quesadilla had to have been 18".
recommend!

The breakfast joint in the Little America is outstanding. Not the cheapest (pretty average prices, actually) with GREAT service, and massive portions. Worth a drop in.

The Pie Hole: Massive slices for CHEEEEP.
try the Potato/Bacon,as long as we arent being NYC slice purists. all good. did I mention cheap?

fresh ass batter and deep fried, fresh squeezed lemonade, and better fries than McD's.
Great kid activity combined with a few hours at the Children's Discovery Center.

Now off to find some real, freshly battered and fried chicken tenders.
Next stop, Moab

Nice work, the Pie Hole is a fast lunch fave. Next time hit up Penny Ann's for breakfast. The pancakes and the breakfast nachos are amazing.

Never understood this. We introduced our kid to all types of cuisines since he could chew solid food. Thurs night is dine out night in our house and it was his choice; he chose an Indian restaurant.

^Ditto... our little one always requests Indian, which is fine by me.

Kid loves Tom Kha Thai, Laarb, Lo mein, Sushi, udon noodle dishes...
He just hates Indian and any sort of red sauce.
He knows what he likes, I guess.
It changes every few weeks....
The only reason we didn't do Peruvian is that it costs $15.00 to find out if that's up his alley today...

Wish I had known this last week. Hard to find a good meal in that town. Should have tried the szechuan place that someone recommended. Ended up preparing most of our own meals anyway, since we know we cook better and a LOT healthier than most restaurants.

The 1st is showing Illinois is it Snider Brothers Meats ?
After paying $160 for four 2inch dry aged Ribeye steaks at Whole foods in Denver one year we realized paying more can be a good thing
They were incredible
I know I have that option to go to whole foods but I would like to know where the locals go for their better steaks

Snyder brothers with a Y, Beltex Meats, or Harmons. I've cooked steaks for a few guys nights and they have always come from Harmons and been really nice.
And as always, cast iron+broil beats grill IMO.

Finn's Cafe for brunch. Market Street Grill/Oyster bar also has a legit brunch
The Pie for good ol' fashioned greasy pizza and beer
X1 million for Red Iguana. Blue Iguana is good, too, but it's NOT the same place.
Squatters downtown has good beer and food
Grew up ~1 mile from Royal India in Sandy and I'm spoiled for Indian food forever now
Kyoto is pretty good for sushi (at least it was 6 years ago when I ate there last). Yellowfin in Sugarhouse isn't as good, but has a better atmosphere IMO
If you're in the burbs, Village Baker is a favorite for a quick lunch

Yeah, also a very good choice.

I live downtown so apologies for the bias, this may not be as useful to out-of-towners staying near the canyons. Some of my favorite new(ish) stuff:

Pho Thin (Sugarhouse) - bomb pho / Vietnamese, inexpensive, not bad atmosphere either.
HSL (Downtown) - spendy but super good
Proper Brewing/Burger (S Downtown) - cheap food, solid beers, cheap ski ball.

Random older but possibly less widely enjoyed (?) stuff I like:

Stoneground (Downtown) - good, inexpensive Italian in a nice atmosphere
Skewered (Downtown) - bomb Thai food, cheap ass lunch specials. I saw one of the Dorais bros picking up food here so it gets the elite hardman patronage as well.
Niche (Downtown) - low key classy, medium spendy, food is always great.
Dick & Dixies (Downtown) - one of the only bars that feels like an actual bar to me, being from the east. Cheap good beer (not just swill).

Classics everyone probably knows that I still think are very good:

Red Rock (Downtown) - good food + beer, their high point beer has improved a lot over the past 18 mos imo, and the food is always solid.
Desert Edge (Downtown) - same as above but only lowpoints. Cheap pitchers + food.
Takashi (Downtown) - hands down the best sushi in the mountain west, don't @ me.

Places that I think are overrated but everyone else likes:

Squatters (Downtown) - boo, hiss. These guys lobby to keep the draft beer capped at 4% ABV. Their beer and food sucks. Their vibe sucks. Fuck Squatters.
Bayou (S Downtown) - cool beer menu but otherwise zzz, food is meh and everything is 25% too expensive.
Beer Bar (Downtown) - ok I go here a lot but it's still overrated and beers are way overpriced.
Everything in the canyons except Molly Greens, which owns.

Campfire (Sugarhouse) - when I lived near there it was sort of a dump, a lot nicer inside now. Very cheap food, chill patio when the weather is nice.

Grocery store chain that is a solidly superior to the average megamart but far less pretentious than Whole Foods. It was recommended because most locations sell dry-aged prime beef that is cut to order.

Both Draper locations definitely are.

Do not confuse The Pie with The Pie Hole, I just realized I have done this for years. The Pie Hole is gross and I couldn't figure out why people were constantly recommended it.

The Market on Main has Afghani food in the back of a convenience store, it's worth a try for downtown peeps. Between 200 and 300.

I hardly travel down to the valley to eat, but when I do, I go to one of the following:
1) Italian: Valter's $$$$
2) Sushi: Takashi $$$$
3) Greek: Aristo's $$
4) BBQ: Pat's BBQ $
5: Chinese: New Golden Dragon $

Also, when driving home from LCC, I go to Wing Coop $

Thanks. The menu looks good. It is right near Maier's Meat Processing? Don't get to S. Jordan much, but I do go to Maier's to get elk Tucker.

I thought valters was OK. Not incredibly impressed. Good, not great. Staff was great though.

R and R bbq is pretty dang good.
Copper Onion was amazingly good n spendy.
Japan Sage Market has the best ramen and super cheap.
The Grove Deli for lunch sammies but get there early or late cause its busy.

I know there is one in Sandy area but I've only been down to the one on 6s 3w downtown. Occasionally they have single deep fried ribs, the wings are fantastic. I've never had a mediocre piece of meat there.

Grove is great, HUGE sammies, but I'd rather go to Este just down the block on the corner of 17s and Main, they are doing a lot of great donation work and I think have the best Italian in town. Also, the chicken cutlet and (house made) slaw is awesome.

Takashi is definitely the best sushi I've had in UT, but if you are staying near BCC/LCC and don't want deal to with going downtown Tsunami is pretty legit.

I haven't been to Del Mar al Lago in a while. Are they still doing good ceviche and pisco spurs?
