Tragic. Vibes
Terrible, just terrible.
Hearing that 5 experienced backcountry enthusiasts were killed in a single slide really makes you think...think about your education, the folks you ski/ride with, how you evaluate your terrain, etc etc. Am I doing absolutely everything I can to ensure my life and my partners' safety out there?
Scary. Prayers to all the families and a thank you to the responders.
EDIT: From the CAIC website:
A group of six snowboarders were caught in an avalanche in the Sheep Creek area near Loveland Pass. Five of the riders will killed. The group may have triggered the avalanche form below the start zone, low in the avalanche path. The avalanche released into old snow layers. Approximate dimensions of the crown face of the avalanche are 4 feet deep and 500 feet wide.
To summarize the only conclusions anyone can legitimately draw at this point before everyone feeds each other more shit sandwiches
Scroll down to find a map of Loveland Slide paths, Sheep Creek is NW of Sniktau, I tried to post the map itself but it was too large.

From multiple sources confirmed that all were wearing beacons and one may have been an actual guide.

I'm pretty sure this slide occurred in the afternoon so my guess is names and more info won't be available until tomorrow. Until then everyone try not to make any statements they will later regret. Truly a sad day, RIP
Thanks for the level heads guys. I would not wish what happened today on anyone. I can share in a few days once it all settles.
Sleep well. Thanks for being there.
The most amazing thing is the lack of disrespect in this thread for folks involved and killed. What the fuck is wrong with you people slinging shit about dead, fellow shreds?

Some fucking week. We lose Tommy Krebs on Maui to a a stupid fall, The boston bombing, fert plant blows, Ptarmigan slides and now this.
Deep prayers and vibes to the fallen. I just came from a memorial for Tk at the beach where 200+ people cried, laughed drank and threw flowers in the waves at sunset.
Life is short, hard and brutish. Be cool, be kind, take care of each other.
Aloha.
stay safe out there people. enough is enough already ffs.
Thanks to those who were involved with the rescue and recovery. Grim work.
Anybody know if the party was ascending or descending when the avy happened?
Some photos up over here:

ascending. right up into the beast.
rog
^^^Yeah, that's what its looking like.
The impact this will have on the larger community is hard to digest. Thoughts and prayers for those in mourning.

The names have been released. RIP
Very sad. My deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victims.
Here are a couple photos that I took on my way home from work. I adjusted the contrast to show the snow texture a little better.

Rest In Peace
It seems to me that they must have been ascending since they all were caught, but I saw this quote from the Sheriff that would indicate they came from the pass which would imply above.
""Six backcountry snowboarders went out from the top of Loveland Pass, got to the area just above Loveland Valley and apparently, triggered a slide," Clear Creek County Sheriff Don Krueger said Saturday."
He probably just doesn't know what he's talking about.
still trying to figure out where the slide was . what loveland lift is that in the first photo?
Above loveland valley. From what I hear they were on the ascent.
Could be they rode a safe line from the road and then were ascending back up when it was triggered. So sad. RIP

Here's a rough google earth image of the area of the slide in relation to Loveland Pass and Loveland Valley (the lower Loveland). I was not there, so this is my best guess from the photos and description.
This is not a frequently skied area and those that I've known who have done it, have done it from near the false summit of Sniktau (the peak to the left).
It is common for people to ski into the Loveland Valley ski runs from the road once the lifts are closed.

Tragic news. Vibes
Man this sucks. RIP to the deceased. I knew Rick just through passing around town and meeting him a few times out in the backcountry. He was a great guy. Positive vibes to the friends and family of all involved.
Damn! Sounds like some heavy hitters perished. So sad. +++ vibes +++ to all.

If its the same Rick I met last week in Silverton, then he was a really great guy. Got to talk to him about guiding and a few other things, could tell that he really loved what he did. This is really sad... Vibes to everyone and their families.
Although it's easy to point and assume this was a collection of clueless Joes, it seems pretty far from the truth. As a group, it was a solid collective of education and experience.

Just awful, and doesn't help that it's so close to home.
I rode my bike up LL pass a bunch of times last summer, and am very familiar with this location on the road, as it marks the last push before the top. This spot will likely prompt some deep reflection on future rides; keep things in perspective, etc.
As to whether they were ascending or descending; I assume someone may have interviewed the 6th rider, and they would have indicated which way they were traveling; up or down. 9news article says they were headed up the drainage; Sheriff says the survivor bailed out to the side. Kinda surprised the CAIC report doesn't say more, not that it changes anything.
Condolences to friends and family.
tragedy RIP
Denver Post article describes a bit about what they were doing at the time - ascending across the bottom, spaced out a bit. One (at least) victim was found with his skins on.

That doesn't really seem to make a difference lately. It seems like the clueless and the experienced have both been involved in incidents like this in recent years. Maybe more of the latter.
They all had their skins on. I can tell you that. My friend Chris had little to no experience out there. The rest i had just met briefly that morning. Nice guys and seemingly prepared. We all make mistakes but group dynamics you know....I'm struggling with it deeply right now.
How does the various reports go from an initial 10 foot to 4 foot crown?
The snow changed so drastically this week over a couple days. Tuesday became so sunny, and the snow morphed so rapidly, then Wednesday the really cold snow came back fast, thursday and Friday was mixed. Was there any warning on CAIC about these significant changes to help those who are not on the mountain every day?
big vibes.
simple - sorry for your loss. Vibes.
I met Ian briefly at Silverton two months ago. Effing EXPERT skier. What the hell happened? :( Condolences to his fiance, daughter, his friends and to loved ones of all the victims.
