I'm thinking early September, around 2 weeks, but I'll be based out of Rio or Sao Paulo. If Santa Rosa blesses us w/ her beauty, you'll find me on the first flight towards LL.
Most likely a yes on SA this summer...
any time between June->August
whats the best bang for your buck place to go?
Cheap, Steep, Deep?
ill sleep in a box if i have too...
I would like to go, however it looks as though my brother will be getting married sometime around early September...
I'm looking at being down there for two weeks! Who's coming with me?
I'm good for a week in august or sept.
Argentina would be really difficult for vegetarians. Meat is like a national religion: they eat about 3x more beef per capita than any other country.Quote:

As far as getting to/from Lenas: just bus it from Buenos Aires unless you get a really good deal to/from Malargue or Mendoza. Super-deluxe overnight sleeper coach, analogous to first class on a plane, will cost you about $30-40 from BA through to Las Lenas (with a connection in Malargue).
Chile wouldn't be much better. You could survive I suppose - your diet wouldn't be varied (cheese, bread, cheese) and you'd miss out on an a signifigant portion of the culture, but whatever floats yer boat. I can't think of a restauraunt menu that featured something without meat - with the exception of fish in Chile.Quote:

Good chance that I might be going this year. But it all depends on my job / work situation after gradumacation
There'll be a large contingent from the PNW this year in Las Lenas due to the serious lack of snow/lack of skiing. We gotta make up some lost days!Quote:

i'll be heading back to SA this year. LL is super rad but i'm interested in doing a hut to hut trip. does anybody know of any?
Divegirl, I must have missed this thread back in Dec. Count me IN!
I have enough flyer miles to go, and if PNW contingent really pulls together I would love to go w/ a group.
This company: http://www.laslenas.net/toursindex.html offers some pretty good deals. This particular package was $950+ but included a lot of stuff. If you can get a group of 12+ people they will apply a group discount to everyone and you can get below the $950 price as more go.
Then there is my preferred way of just staying wherever you can find an apartment for cheap, rent a car, and play it by ear (not an all-inclusive or cushy resort experience). I'm of course more comfortable doing this than some b/c I know the language. Wait til you hear me burst into fluent spanish. People have no idea I speak it like that and it freaks 'em out every time!
But no, it's not too early to begin conspiring to do this. I'm happy to help in any way. Should just call it a South America Summit this summer since so many are interested? What do you guys say about actually planning this as a summer summit (yes, I'm volunteering to help...translating, stickers, etc)? Has there ever even been a SA summit yet?

She'd kick my A** if I took her to SA and then said, "Oh honey, you can go to the spa while I ski the gnar". She'd say, "Oh yea, I'll ski you into the ground and drop YOU off at the SPA later - bring it!" She's a solid skier, but more so she's a "anything you can do...." type of gal. I love it.Quote:

Squirrel: do you know what the weather in SA looked like last time there was an El Niño effect like this on the west coast of the U.S.?Quote:

Hmmmm - gotta figure this out. Could swing a week, but whether to bring grrr jr.? Anyone know if there are any camps he could take while I tour?
Understand the Flights to Malargue are only on Saturdays if you're going to LL. This is the closest airport to LL. I flew into San Rafael and rented a car. This ended up being less that a 2 hour drive but this also allowed me to follow the storms while I was down there and not be tied to a Saturday flight. Mendoza is another option but it seemed like it was longer drive to LL, although if you stop at the wineries it might not seem so long.
And if you're in your 20s, Damajuana hostel is totally worth it (<$10). Meet travelers from all over the world, maybe even some skiers, and get to go out and see Mendoza which is an awesome town!Quote:

What you say?
Anyone got any good suggestions for plane tickets?
good suggestions for plane tickets? Yep:
It is much better to procure them ahead of time than wait till the day of departure.
