Sounds like you guys are crushing it up north. It's been super blown out down in FL but that should change when Earl comes through. Think we'll finally get our window. Hopefully it won't be too big for our flat sandbars.
This one should have a NE component to it so some fo the reefs and points just south of Fort Pierce could be fun.
^^^^^ Ah, those mysto reefs. For sure we can expect pics. If not here, then on Surfline or in a mag. Those spots always look so fun when they break every once in a while.
Just looked at the charts, and this one is lining up to light up Nova Scotia. Elsewhere north of the cape may just get a day or so of big jumble. RI looks to be good, but the storm is to move close by. Those long deep inlets in NS should be able to rake this thing into clean lines. Hatteras, OTOH. Geez.
You're probably thinking spots a little further south. I surfed some in Palm Beach during a big northeast swell my first winter here. It was bananas. Crystal clear water where the only waves breaking on the reef were sets every 15 minutes. Easy to drift out of position waiting that long, but since the water was so clear you just stay outside the reef, which is easy to see. I kept thinking my shadow on the bottom was a shark.Quote:

surfed at the pipe this morning for 2 hours at the proper tide after the working folk had to clock in. perfect belly/chest high long a-frame-ish lefts and rights. probably the most fun of the past 7 days. twas just rippable!
6-10 b2t sprays with a couple of cut b's per wave. unreal. way too easy.
left the full suit in the car. nh water is WARM! so glad to have had the warm water wax. NEVER needed that growing up and surfing on the cape for 20 years.

You kind of need to choose east or west side, otherwise it can be a long drive. If it is sizable, I always enjoyed Pt. Judith. It gets crowded, but can handle a crowd, and a variety of winds. Plenty of options around there for the adventurous. Even some breaks inside the harbor jetties to the west. And plenty of reefs along the eastern side.
There is also a series cobblestone breaks further west (go inland and then back out to the water) M----------- (native Indian name). This is where I got busted for sleeping on public property.
Newport has some breaks. Ruggles is the big name, but there are a series of breaks outside and to the south west that are much less surfed and can offer up a pummeling.
There are options east of Newport as well, but my memory really fades.
Or you could just dive in and take the ferry out to Block Island.

Fun, waist - chest high waves at a local reef today, lined up nicely, light onshore winds. We'll see what Earl brings tomorrow.
Last night was powerful but dumping at my break. Schedules meant I didn't get out there until 6 PM, which was just about high tide. This beach doesn't do as well at high tide, and last night was no exception. There was too much water over the bar, so waves didn't break until they were right over the flat bar top. (It's a lot better when the waves break on the seaward slope of the bar at a lower tide or bigger swell.) Waves were chest to shoulder. Sets were obvious, and well spaced. The swell had a lot more E in it than I had expected. The tide was high enough that the river draining the marsh was flowing over the tombolo eastward along the beach. This all conspired to produce a mega eastward rip, coupled with large closeouts. When I could get on the shoulder it was fast and fun. Otherwise rides were mostly short and explosive.
The water is warm. For the first time at this beach, I saw jellyfish and picked up a few minor stings. The sturgeon continue to bust furiously just beyond the break.
Sorry no pics yet. After I secure the garden trellising tonight, I may head down to the beach -- presumably to spectate.
Was super fun this AM. First light was bigger than yesterday evening with the NE swell. Overhead sets. I'm out of shape.

Charts and buoys are showing a lot of long period (14-18+ sec) aspect to this swell. I imagine the swells are wrapping off of the Cape, and hence the E direction. Sick.Quote:

^^^^ Um, the O rivermouth. The cliffs heading out to Perkins do a good job of shifting the wind to be SW.... unless there is a too much E in the S wind.
And SS. Screw the Blackball. Are they really gonna come out in the bone crushing wedge to fish you out. It used to be a $15 ticket, and twice it was well worth it.
Be creative. My favorite thing about ME surfing is every wind is an off shore when the swell is big enough.
Got in a couple hours (10-12pm) of surf at Judith point this morning, definitely the biggest waves I've ever caught, Then I snapped my leash in half:eek: I had to swim in as fast as possible to fetch my board before it got FUBAR'd on the rocks, she survived with some small cracks and dents, but held up OK.
By the time I ran to a surf shop and got a new leash the winds had changed and picked up.

hit a lovely high tide beach break this morning that surfs like a point break. very few folks out and both lefts and rights holding up really well with an easy paddle out. overhead sets were plentiful. hopefully still somethin with some push in the a.m.

Maine was cranking this am; sets were definitely in the well overhead to almost DOH range. Still good, but winds switching SW, which are fine still for other locations.
Any leash over a year old is suspect, especially if it gets left out in the sun.
Panama? Were you at that Morman run camp? Small break in front of camp, a point, a rivermouth and an island. We got that island real good one day for about two hours with ten foot faces. Epic. Otherwise, the whole place required having plenty of rum
goat where are u based R.I.? i remember that the standard leashes are pretty skinny you can get ones that are a little more beefy, thicker rubber. also keep an eye on the little loop of string that the leash attaches to on the board as this can be a weak point after a few seasons. my buddy lives north of portland by reid state park hope hes getting some good ones. you ever hit the cape...? ive had some good days up by wellfleet.
ya that sounds right. morro negrito... was there a few years ago not much swell but some fun days by the rivermouth. def good to have some rum and cokes. problem is there is a massive island farther out that blocks a lot of swell, when i go back to central america im going back to el sal, super cheap and all right hand point breaks. scored a good day ant punta roca in la libertad. just be respectful of the locals...
Mike- I'm based in VT, travelled to RI for the storm, then I was back up in NH this afternoon and there were still good overheads till dark.
It's supposed to die down quick tonight, but Im gonna stick around and see if they are wrong again like last week
I did the cape about 3 weeks ago. surfed Nausett and marconi, and got it on a couple great days with some big, clean waves.
at the honey hole........
spent 12 hours at the beach today starting with a small windy session at the pipe. not very good. chilled for a few hours till 2 hours before low and with diminishing winds and a more westerly wind direction things really came on. gorgeous thigh/waist high long lefts at the honey hole with just 4 of us out. went out leashless on the lost round nose fish and had my way, we all did. we all knew each other and just traded waves and laughed at how frickin good it was.
it's still happening..........i'm cooked.
maybe a bump left in the morning? why should it stop now?!
