It would be neat to film at Jay Peak but for the folks who can't go so far up, maybe we can meet at old-time Plattekill, NY one day after a snow dump.

Droopy et al. - I think everyone sending in their own tapes is a great idea, but should be something separate from this project. I think (thanks 13) this may yield a more powerful result if we stick to footage shot with my old camera as its passed from hand to hand around the globe. The eventual film will end up with more of a soulful feel if the finished product is a collective of effort with a level playing field of equipment (my opinion).
Also, from a technical standpoint, if we resort to letting people submit their own footage, we'd not only end up with a mess of different format tapes, but also the quality would be different from location to location, and I must admit that always kind of bothers me when I see a film shot with a variety of different cameras/film media.
Although, digital footage would make it easy to edit. If only we had a digital camera to pass around.
So I guess a decision needs to be made - do we
a) collect footage from people and create a film with it
b) limit the footage to that shot with my old camera?
Perhaps I'll edit the original post to include a poll to gauge the public opinion...
Just got to work, and of course Lane has yet another fucking incredible idea. Nice job homie. Im of course all n and will shoot, edit, ski, hike, and mail the camera wherever to contibute in any way possible.
One thing comes to mind though, regarding the camera... Just so the footage matches from location to location, shooter to shooter... you may want to send an instruction sheet with the camera for setting white balance and other setup instructions so that the footage blends and doesnt look like a patchquilt at the end.
Also, on a related note that I was thinking of posting(but in no way want to hijack this awesome thread)... I stepped up and bought a 16mm last month and I will be making the rounds across the west after Dec 31st-- when you know of a truly epic storm coming your way PM me and hopefully I can get out to capture all the mags in their natural hucking habitat.

That being said: WSD mentioned a EC Mini, etc. That's a great way to go too. Localized minis - a taste of different terrain and a wider variety of people getting filmed....There are definitely some folks I can think of whom I'd like to see ski - especially on their home mountains - but you can get that AND a host of other people if it's organized to get everyone together for a day or 2 of filming...
Yeah, it'd be GREAT to have the cam make its' way to where it's dumping, but - for example....You just never know what you're gonna get on the EC / Mid-Atlantic. 2'-3' on one day, (ok, not inthe Mid-Atlantic :nonono2: ) bulletproof 2 days later....It doesn't need to be film of ONLY epic days (those will happen anyways, to be sure), but it'd be cool just to see everyone skiing in their "average" conditions, whether that's good or bad.

So here's my latest thoughts:
1. Let's stick with the one camera idea, at least to make one film with it. The multuiple camera/footage submission idea is excellent, but should be a different project leading to a different result (or bonus footy, as someone suggested). If someone wants to lead that, go for it!
2. Eric (Evil E) has lots of filmmaking experience, and is knowledgeable in the ways of moving imagery. He has suggested a production schedule. EPSkis (and others) have suggested that the camera make it to all the minis and the summit, as a bare minimum. I like this idea, but I also like the spontenaity of it going from one person to another to follow storms, in-between storms fun, etc. And hell yeah it should be used for apres-ski drinking, shenanigans. What would be better than filming a "unsmart thing done" in the making?!?
Inevitably, this project will not be 100% fair (there aren't enough days in a season to get it to everyone), but it will still work out to something cool based on the inherent coolness of the people who participate in the project and make up this community. The free-form nature of the camera's travels are an integral part of the original idea....
3. That said, let's work on a production schedule based on minis and summits as a rough framework. Can anyone point me to a list of these? Are they on the calendar portion of the TGR UBB system? I can use this as a starting point.
The Calendar on TGR is a great place to lay out the production schedule, I think. That way, everyone knows when/where the camera needs to be for the important dates.

The funny thing about my sig is that it is an actual quote from a story I heard on NPR a few weeks ago about employees of the state of Louisiana who are so horribly obses that they were selected to have state-funded stomach stapling surgery in an attempt to see if reducing their weight would save the state money in the end in paying their health benefits. Another thing I was thinking of is... If we pass it around, when should we wrap it up? I, for one, like to shoot the summer skiing around here in June and July. If we go into the summer, editing won't even get started until well into August or September, so it doesn't sound realistic that a finished product could be finished by the end of the summer.
Either way - it has been mentioned that it would be cool to piggy-back it on a TGR DVD or something. What about this: Once we get something together we talk to TGR about allowing us to play it before or after their film at next year's showings, or have our own little showing tour. Bonus double feature at your local film house! Assuming we have it put together by then...
EC is definitely temperamental...end of Jan or mid-Feb would be the best times to get footage around these parts.
I think I'll post up an "EC mini" thread to see what dates people around here are thinkin' (loosely).

Though the "one camera, one movie" idea sounds cool, I think that it might miss quite a bit of the Mag lifestyle, for those of us for various reasons aren't going to be able to make the summits. I'm probably going to be getting and Elura or something of that miniDV sort at somepoint this year, and would love to contribute footy. I also have a Hi8/other vhs tape -> Digital conversion hardware available and the digi editing sftware (finalcut) but doubt I'll have access to that over the summer. AMAZING IDEA. How long does the battery last? Is there more than one battery?

To answer Vinz's question - there's currently only a spare AA battery pack, that takes 6 AAs. I lost the NiCad battery somewhere along the way, so I'm either going to buy one in Truckee at Radio Shack (if I can), or order one online tomorrow. But until then, there's basically limitless power if the person carrying the camera is willing to schlep extra AAs. Before I send it off to anyone, I'll make sure there is at least one rechargable battery in the kit. If I need to get it to someone ASAP early next week (i.e. if Alta is going to open next weekend) then they'll just have to use AAs until I can mail them the battery seperately.
A logbook is a great idea, I have one and I'll include it in the package.
Here's what's up first - I just talked to Alkasquawlik, who is driving up from Santa Cruz to Tahoe right now, and planning on doing some sledding/skiing tomorrow. So I'm gonna meet him somewhere in Truckee tomorrow AM and pass it on to him for the day while I (and lots of others, I might imagine) slave away over our keyboards.
Then it'll go out with us on Saturday at Squallywood to cover the beginning of what we all hope is a long, deep season. After that, I'll take the thing around with me on Saturday night in an attempt to document some of the debauchery that I'm sure will ensue in my pursuit of a good time Saturday night in Squaw and Stateline.
After that, it's in the mail early next week to ____________? Anybody wanna step up for first at bat to get this party started? Any nominees? Let's see how deep the rabbit hole goes.....
EDIT - I got an idea. How about each person who gets the camera is responsible for buying a new tape for it to do their own filming? The tapes are like $4.00 at any grocery store or Long's Drugs. This way, no one would have to worry about taping over someone else's work. So, bascially, I'll send it out first with a blank tape, and then when the next person gets the camera, they have to go buy a new tape. Then before they send it along, they mail their tape back to me. I'll hold on to them until we figure out what the next step is. Even if you buy a 120 minute tape and only use like 40 minutes, no big deal.....

Or will it just travel around to whomever requests it? Either way it is a sick idea. Hopefully we can shoot some quality footy with it at the Utah Mini, and hopefully showcase the mad backslapping steeze of me and my friend into some deep, deep Ootah pow. [antijinx] :biggrin:
