193 K2 fours. my first 'shaped' ski. loved those things.
Popular ski that Rossignal 4s, 207, kevlah baby. That was a good year.
That was a tough choice, hard to deny the other classics that tug at my heart strings:
Rossi ST Comp 195
Spalding Squadra Course 205
Spalding Sideral 205
Kneissel White Star 210
Head Free Species 198
I have to admit K2 Mod X are my favorite skis because of their versitility.
My favorites based on the number of days skied, fun had, air taken, durability..... would have to be the 205 Volkl Renntiger Rs I got in 1985. I skied them for 12 years and they still had life.
My other favorites are my current touring (& only) skis Volkl G2.
Then- Honorable mentions - BD Savages, RD Coyote Softs
Fav- Elan DRCs 198cms of the stiffest damned foam core ski. Took my skiing to a whole nuther level (they would NOT go slow)
Now- Honorable mentions - Iggy Pinners, FaGS, 194 Arnos
Fav- Big Daddies (ohhhh JEOMK)
BTW- indubitably the worst, lousiest, lamest, sketchiest, wimpiest ski I've been on in a decade were 01-02 XXXs :(
Great thread - how the original "Dynastar Omeglass" - I picked up a pair in a 190 still almost brand-new in a Denver pawn shop for $1 a couple years ago - remounted the bindings and they are still a joy to ski. :)
Favs - Cheap pair of 198 Head Lites from about 1984 that came as part of a package w/ solly 747 bindings. $199.00 for skis, boots & binders and, aside from the rear entry boots getting tossed after the first year, they made it over 700 days and 13 years. Not the best skis ever released, but I've now gone through 5 pairs in the last 5 years and nothing has come close to being as much fun.
old schools faves-
Blizzard V20 Thermo RS-203 cm
Dynastar G9-206 cm-my all-time favorite skis
Head Racing SL-205 cm
I addition to the 207 K2 TNC I posted earlier, I'd like to also mention the 193 K2 Explorer. This was my first fat ski and gave me the first taste of carving long high speed turns in deep snow.
I'm with Schmear on the Salomons but the original orange 1S (212cm) was the BOMB! Moving from the KVC to that ski changed my world forever.
Then there was the pair of 222cm Yamaha DH boards (all blue with MRR bindings) that I grabbed at a consignment shop in Truckee. Holy crap, those things were fast. Had to give em up when I moved back east, though. You can hurt folks with those things around here. Tucking the groomer under the Siberia quad at Squaw on those things still ranks as one of the biggest rushes I've ever had on skis.
Hmmm...interesting topic: What's the biggest rush you've ever had on skis?
I think all old skis that have fondness in my heart met an early demise. That being said my two favs are:
-K2 GS Race 204cm (blue and greenish graphics). I finally had a pair of big GS sticks like all the guys in the mags. I remember arcing huge turns down a face of some bowl at Alta. I didn't even have them that long and then bam! Blew out an edge (really badly) landing on a rock off a cliff I had been lapping off the chair. RIP.
-Nordica Z TT 180cm, first twin tip they ever made. had yellow topsheet with black tips on each end (look like bananas). I proformed them when I worked at a shop for $160. They had fast all black bases and were my first twin tip ski. I think I've only ever seen one other person with them at a hill. They skied so nice. The tails started to delam (weird, I know). I sent them in in hopes of getting next years model and they just credited me $130 (took off shipping). I wish now I'd just popped a few rivets in the tails and kept them.
On that note, I picked up my new Pistols last night. I can't stop touching them.
My favs were the 206 Atomic GS (one black ski, one yellow)
Now my favs NORDICA W105 (190cm) You want to go fast?? Nothing more stable. Why for they no makey ski no more??
