It's a Blue Grouse for your FYI, so not quite a quail (although they do look like one) but more in the grouse/turkey family! Pretty lucky to see one this early, one can usually see them in the fall.

Looks like you guys had better weather than us on Saturday- we got greedy and went for a 2nd summit and got weathered in on the summit over 13K. We sat there for an hour waiting for some clearing - never came so we descended by braille - yuck.

A blue is arguably the smartest or the dumbest of gamebirds. Clearly, along with the ptarmigan they are among the very smartest for their selection of lifestyle could simply not lead them to more beautiful places.
But flying up into a tree or puffing up at the approach of "predators" puts them down in the dumb dumbs. They can be sucessfully hunted with sticks and rocks. Of course sometimes…they'll take off for the next county like they're supposed to.
iskibc, how late in the summer does that snowfield hold skiable snow?
Haha I was going to say earlier that you can hunt the things w/ sticks but since I had no experience doing it, I would be a wee bit out of my realm to say as much...But, my buddies have done it, made for a nice meal I guess while they were out elk hunting! We noticed the dust layer that day while skiing at Loveland. It looked like it was deposited on top of the snow after the lifts closed Friday (IMO). It might have originated from the Colorado Plateau area, based on the orangish color.
And that looks nothing like Snowmass. If you hike in the Sawatch you see Snowmass all the time. The peak on the left edge of that photo looks like Sopris, and Snowmass would be further to the left (past Capitol).
Assuming the pick is from James Peak in the Front Range than that is not Snowmass, if it is I will eat my hat and gladly pay you double what you payed for whatever telephoto you used for that pic.Quote:

That peak you are referring to is definitely not Snowmass. I'm pretty sure it's something in the Gore or possibly the far northern Sawatch. Holy Cross is to the far left of the photo above, and the peak you are referring to is more in the middle of the photo, which would be something in the Gore. I'm guessing that it's either Valhalla, Grand Traverse, or Keller. I may be way off though.

thanks for always getting it done in the gore range, was one of my favorite ranges to visit in the summer, never got up there in the winter...... I loved the solitude in the summer months must be dead in the winter
Awesome TR as always...I have been eyeing that couloir off of "N" for quite some time now as well as a few others while driving past Green Mtn. resevoir (the wife is required to drive that strech ;) ). Any idea of the access from that side of the range, perhaps via CR1700 to Black lake or CR1725 to Cataract Lake?

Dust layer hit the Steamboat Zone and Flattops as well...Came in Wednesday night with the wind event/storm. All the cars in steamboat were covered with a layer of red dust thursday...:mad:
Thanks. "N" and "O" offer some kickass lines off the east side, but are super tough to reach due to private property boundaries and the lack of a true trailhead. They are definitely overnighters, but are well worth the effort as that area is so remote and so beautiful. Blake Lake drainage is one of the most difficult to reach drainages in the entire Gore. It sees maybe a handful of visitors each year. Most of it is bushwhacking, with no real trail system and a far far away trailhead.Quote:
