Jesus. A few years ago, no one knew that the Legacy even came as a sedan.
honda made a 4wd accord wagon for years but only sent them to europe. don't know if they're still around, but they looked great. go figure...
Looks like I'll never buy a Subaru again until the Legacy comes back. Good work, idiots! Its amazing that a multi-national company could be so far out of the loop. Or maybe I am. Whatver, it's retarded.
Baker,
I understand how you feel. I never understood "focus groups". IMHO, I understand that they need to slim down teh product line, but we don't need 15 versions of the outback.
Yeah but now that they put that fugly front end on the "new" 9-5s I would almost be more apt to buy the 9-3 aero sport combi based on looks alone. (If someone had a gun to my head and was forcing me to buy a SAAB right now.) The older 9-5 wagons are IMVHO the best looking wagon out there, but that is a topic for another time and place.
Back to your regularly scheduled Subie-fest...
I've changed my mind. I'll buy a Subaru Baja STi. Since that's inevitably the next thing coming. Or a minivan/Ford Freestyle looking thing, since all the lesbians are adopting large families now. Seriously, the nazi-feminist lesbians in America have ruined Subaru.
Why are all the horse power ratings on subaru's website less than last year's? And why does the imprezza get worse milage than the legacay with the same engine in a smaller car? where did the 276hp legacy gt go? was that only 1 year? and what is the hp and mpg of my 03 legacy sedan?
AKPM has such a kick ass Legacy, it eats alternators for breakfast.
The government changed the way it gets calculated to make it more accurate. Really.
You sure about that?
Couldn't tell you without knowing the trimline, but start here, choose your weapon, and then click the "specs" links.
huh. Well, not the responses I expected from the fervent Subie crowd around here. But then again being a non Subie owner, I did not know they dropped the HP.
With the disclaimer that I could not care less because I don't own this and won't any time soon since I am looking for a 3 or 4 year old car, here are my thoughts:
From my point of view knowing not so much of previous Subies; IMO this is a decent looking car with adequate power. Not over the top power, but adequate. Not the most perfect styling, but I am casually looking for a sedan for a few reasons. I really don't care for the look of wagons at all, but understand they hold more shit.
A few years ago, I drove a 4 banger turbo assisted car for about 4 years with a maximum HP of 210 and lots of torque. It was enough to get me up and down the hills with comfort. Regarding turbo vs NA, I enjoyed some aspects of the turbo, but did find turbo lag annoying. I drive about 30,000 miles a year, half being open road mountain driving, half being in city stop and go. (cue people telling me cities suck) The two instances where turbo lag would come into play were: highway cruising, and city driving. When cruising, and a jong makes a bad move in front of you requiring a stomp on the gas pedal, the split second of lag was noticeable. Granted, that only happened a handful of times in the four years I drove that car. The other being more noticeable was city driving. Around town in Summer with the air conditioner cranked, accelerating off of a dead stop was considerably underpowered, where a NA car would compensate better. Yes I know a NA car does not hit it's max HP until the optimum RPM, but still, noticeable. That said, I could still see myself buying another turbo if the circumstances were right.
So there you go.
I'm waiting for the clean burning turbo diesels. I rented a Volvo S60 TDI in Italy last year;100 MPH on the autostrada and not even breaking a sweat. Great acceleration and torque. I hear Mercedes has a turbo diesel V6 that has over 400 ft/lbs of torque  and 36 MPG. Should be out next year.
A5/S5 (I know, not Sedan, but will be available in 6MT)
I wonder if all these people who have turbos, V6s and V8s (or bigger) are the same people who complain about gas prices and how we should do more to protect our environment?
Having once had Ford's top exhaust reduction engineer explain to me in detail -- with spur-of-the-moment diagrams and graphs -- why turbocharged engines are inherently more fuel efficient (in a nutshell, they reduce or eliminate pressure drop during the intake stroke), I think I can safely say that, at least as to the first of the three, I'm surprised you can see the display on your computer with your colon in the way.
As for six and eight cylinder engines, it depends on what your alternative is and the vehicular application.
thats interesting alpinedad, never knew that. Havent owned a car in 8 years and its been pretty nice. Where Im moving to next week Ill need one but figure I can get by for the first 6 months or so.
Generally speaking, dont V4s have better gas milage than a V6 and V8s though? Ill get a legacy wagon here but dont need a V6 - especially when the govt here fucks you in the ass on taxes with it.
Generally speaking, displacement volume matters more than cylinders, but tends to increase proportionally with them.
All things being equal, a turbo four with the same output as a naturally aspirated six is going to get better mileage.
Forced induction is one of the few ways to dramatically increase a motors potential output, while still allowing a good fuel economy.
New tech for V8's such as killing cylinders under lighter loads is interesting too.
I've got an AWD 4-cylinder turbo car that weighs 3200lbs. It gets close to 30mpg under daily conditions. But when I took it to the 1/4 mile track 2 years ago when I was into motorsports (which I really am not any longer) I have run a best of 14.079 at 94 mph. (quick, not fast, but quick) That is with nothing more than an aftermarket clutch and a boost controller, which doesn't do anything to my regular fuel economy.
Just got a 2007 with a manual trans. for cheap in East Mass. Apparently they're going fast.

Glad i'm finally out of these debates. Still agree they rock in snow and anything under a foot but glad to be riding high on proooooooooven and easily wrenchable shit when the time comes.
