Cutting in lift line/saving spots before first chair?

ha ha I watched you toss snorkledeeps skis out from beside yours one morning a couple years ago. I manged to get third chair that day, it did me no fucking good as I had no clue where the hell to go as it was only me second day every skiing Alta.

If there is a mob of people in line you should be able to let TWO at most join you. If it's a small group of early arrivals you can hold out for enough to fill out the chair.

Better debate is how do we stop those gumguzzling ass hat biatch ski schoolers from cutting the line. Those fuckers shouldn't even think of rolling up into the line after the mob develops and cutting.

im always surprised at KT lineup how civilized everybody is. skis or boards laid down = spot saved. nobody every argues about that. then again, it's always the same faces who come at nearly the same time, be it 2 hours ahead of time for epic days in march or april last year, or half hour before opening.

but people get their coffee or dave's deli breakfast and socialize by their skis. it's always been something to look forward to on big pow mornings, seeing all your friends and coworkers lined up mingling. the problems come when the mountain opens and all hell breaks loose. and you cant expect the lifties to give a rat's ass being paid 7 bones an hour.

all part of the game, i guess. house rules always set the pace.

Bragging rights? BFD - you're gonna ski no matter which chair you're on and if you're there that early, you're gonna get first tracks somewhere.

Are there people among us whose lives are so meaningless that they will fight, cheat, whatever in order to claim the self-importance of riding the first chair of the day? If so, then Darwin was way off with that evolution thing.

I think you're confusing the "significance" of first chair, and the importance of skiing untouched blower. Go ski Alta for a quick crash session.

No doubt, first vs third, no big deal.

First vs 34th, is a big deal.



I've only seen a few places smart enough to open the corral prior to the rope dropping time. Seems they could alleviate a lot of stress by doing this everywhere. Once the corral is open, there is usually (depending on layout) no way for someone to cut.

Anyone who is, knows and or manages lifties? Get on it!

It doesn't make much difference if you are just going to ski groomers.

If I rolled up two minutes before the chair opened and proceeded to cut in line because my buddies were up front I'd feel like a complete tool.

I'm all fine with skis holding places in line (not that I get up that early most of the time, but anyways...) but one pair of skis means one place held to me. Just because you put one pair of skis down means you think you own the quad? Get serious.

On a double I'd say it's a little different, you can put your skis down and wait for one buddy to show, that seems fair. But like a half hour before opening they lose their spot if they still haven't showed.

I know it's not logically consistent.

Ideally all chairs would be singles, we wouldn't have to debate this and we wouldn't have to talk to anyone.

I just wish people who get first chair would know what the hell they're doing. Nothing bums me out more than seeing a guy 20 chairs in front of me slide the entire run/chute out on his board edge, plowing a four-foot-wide bombhole for 1,500' vert. :cussing:

Just because you get first chair, doesn't mean you've earned first chair.

I'll admit it, I'll do just about anything for fresh tracks. A couple of years ago at Bear a bunch of instructors were skiing around on a powder morning. One of the chairs (Silver) was running, but not yet open. One of my buddies managed to convince the lifty that he was a supervisor (he wasn't) and should be allowed to take our group up the chair. We managed to get two laps in before it was open to the public. Everyone else was seriously annoyed, but I got two laps of pow with no competition.

Cutting in line is not fuckign acceptable. I'd say its almost an ass-kicking worthy offense. My way of dealing with it is just to ignore them when they say "excuse me". When they start getting annoyed, turn around and tell them to go to hell and shut thier mouth.

I've managed to ski untouched/untracked powder at Alta at 2:00 in the afternoon. Apparently, you don't know where to look.

The east sucks in general, but Whiteface sucks particularly for first chair/gondi. Its a 3-4 inch day, nothing great but for whiteface its nice, so I'm there and the first one in line, then douchebag lifty tells me to step outta line so that some season passholders behind me can get first tracks.

I haven't skied WF since, Fuckers:cussing:


K-mart is much more organized until they actually drop the rope :biggrin:

At Squaw, KT, you will get your poles broke and your skis tossed if you try any such act.You get there early, two to three hours before the lift opens, and wait there with your skis. I have seen fights and gear get thrown out of line many times. Squaw is serious shit man.

^yeah but thats pretty lame that one person can reserve a whole chair for 3 of his other buddys who are still driving up the canyon. Because essentially they just cut off all the people that have been waiting patiently in the singles line. Those empty spots on the chair should be for the singles who have been waiting, not people who show up late and jump the whole line
