Any Boulder mags ever had a cheesesteak from Half Fast Subs? They keep advertising 'steaks from the originator of the Philly steak sandwich' or something like that.

Gotta get up there for lunch soon.

Oh yeah - for all the Colorado mags - the Tommyknocker brewpub in Idaho Springs throws down a prime rib cheesesteak that is damned good. Not really Philly style but a killer sandwich nonetheless.

You've got good taste, D'allesandro's was my neighborhood spot for a year or two, and I worked a bit in South Philly, where Tony Luke's was a regular stop.

I'd like to nominate Mastricola's in Conshy, and Chubby's across the street from D'allesandro's was a decent backup if you needed one on sunday and the good italian catholics were closed. Pudge's in Plymouth Meeting - worthy of a mention.

That brings up another sandwich, the Wawa Hogie. YUM, at least over a decade ago.

Lower Makefield Township. The home of a lot of people that worked in NYC and commuted. Unfortunately, I knew of at least 2 HS friends that were lost. I would have a hard time at the memorial.

If you can get a few pics and PM them to me, that would be nice though.

Brocco's off South St. and Pudge's was and still is the bomb. Pudges took quite the hit though when a rumor went around that Pudge himself had AIDS. Messed up if you ask me.

God, what I wouldn't do for a Cheese Steak Hoagie right now.

Better yet, a double cheese steak w/ Bacon and BBQ sauce from mocia's on my way to the Philly Folk Fest! Can you say heartattack.

For you Bozone Mags...Frank's on E. Babcock has got a good sub. Not perfect, but worth the 8 bucks. Ouch! And soon the rumor is that he's gonna put out an East Coast pizza!

what.....you've never had one with American?

Let me tell you why it's the best. Like whiz, it stays goopy and hot + it has that artificial taste we all love, but allittle better for you. Provolone is good, but only if you eat it right away. If you don't, it gets all stringy and hard.

How about cold cheeze whiz out of the jar on a toasted Ego? Worth a shot if you long for the whiz.

so those of us that have never had a true philly from philly, can you enlighten us what makes one good?

grilled slices of steak, in a good section of italian bread, covered in cheese (whiz, american, or provo) with optional onions, peppers, shrooms etc.

is there some special seasoning or is it just grease?

inquiring minds want to know

pechelman- seriously, the philly cart at the end of the 16th street mall serves up steaks that are every bit as good as anywhere in philly and...then you'll know.

I agree with the previous "Pat's and Gino's flat out suck" statement. They cater to tourists and visitors. Jim's on South St. is kinda touristy, too. Dalassandro's is tops IMO. And all Philly natives know you use provolone cheese, and that cheese wiz being authentic is a myth perpetrated by Ginos and Pat's to make the tourists and tv cameras feel like they're getting the real thing.

I've only been to Philly once, my friend from there took me to get a real "Philly cheese steak". Moochie's tastes as good from what I remember, has processed yellow cheese, very greasey. Seems authentic, but like I said I have been to Philly once. If you hit up Moochie's let me know if I am way off on my assesment.

Word to Stump. Moochies on 8th south and like two fiddy east is the only one in SLC that I have found. It uses cheese spread, and is pretty authentic. VERY greasy. If you like a slightly drier, but still really good cheese steak, the place up in PC, Atlantic Pizza and Deli, is definitely legit. It was just opened this fall by some dudes from Jersey and Mass. Billerica, Mass to be exact. Second only to Fall Rivah in pure Massitude.

For the record, I made these for dinner last night and was quite impressed with myself. In fact I was so impressed I went home for lunch and had another one. Problem is I still have a craving for them. Some part of the cheese, good bread, meat and sauteed onions is like crack only even more addicting. I am already trying to figure out if I have time to go try Moochies for lunch tomorrow :D

cheese (aged gouda + goat) appy #1
crab (real crab) stuffed shrooms appy #2
homemade AND grown creamed swiss chard (holy hell was it good too)
bacon wrapped gadwall breast
chocolate eclaire for dessert.

It's more about Philadelphians trying to conjure some semblance of a reason for living in a city so far removed from any quality skiing.

i love gouda, it's the cheese of my people (my father is a dutch immigrant to set the record) (and it's not pronounced goo-da you silly americans. a more correct way that your mouths may grasp is gow-da). i think i may just have to splurge and buy some. i love cheese.
