If you could have a dream season, how much would it cost

Keep mind that a lot (not all) leases tend to start on the 1st of the month. Arriving in the first week could be tough. Aim for the last week of the month (Spetmeber is good here) if possible.

Also, I second the idea that working at least a little is worth while. Hook ups, connections, etc more than make up for the time spent working.

I started in a ski shop in the Village 4 days a week. I could still ski on my lunch break and got discounted pass and gear and insider info on skiing and bars plus free food and beer in exchange for tune ups. Also, the friends I made at the shop are a big part of why I still live here.

I think most leases that are available start when you want them to... but it would probably be a good idea to get there the last week of a month anyways, just in case.

If you could save up enough for your major expenses, a part time job should get you everything else for the season....

If you have a lot up front, pay a bunch up front, it'll help you realize where your at budget wise. Maybe pay off your rent for the season or something.

Good idea, I think.

Theoretically we should all be good budgeters and be able to realize what money we can't spend. Unfortunately reality often intervenes. I've taken to having separate bank accounts for just this sort of purpose.

if you can get there in Late Sept/Early Oct you'll be in good shape. Try to camp it for a while and get aquainted with your surroundings. Ask around, find out what the locals who've been there for a while think about certain areas to live / people to work for. Don't jump into the first thing you find...unless it's an 18 year old chick who also just moved there. SHACK UP!!!
Kick around and go into random shops, restaurants as a tourist before filling out applications. They will all be hiring at some point. Find the places you best fit in before committing.
First order of buisness is always hiking to the top of your new backyard and taking a ,very much deserved, breath of freash air.
I hate to say it, but no matter how much you save it won't be enough. At least it never was for me. Put as much down on major bills as you can and set aside enough to make it till christmas for living expenses. By then all the tourists will be there to bail you out! Never enough beer money.

Funny you mention two of the mountains that have the most expensive passes in the country. :D

Gotta pay to play right? Id love to score a job tuning skis at night, that would probably be the most money position I can think of.

Id love to come out towards the end of Sep, but I was planning on that month for some extra income. Plus, even if I did get out there the last week of September, I really like the idea of just cruising around the valley camping out and figuring everything out (place I really like, good job, meet a few people).

if you want the highly covitted "night tuner" position, then early and often contact with multiple shops is required. Problem with ski shops is that in the higher archy of things, the new guy always gets stuck on days, unless you have mad experience and sometimes that dosen't even help.

My first ski bum job was at a shop in Beaver Creek. I had 7 years experience at my local shop from home...certified tech, the whole nine yards. My schedule was brutal at the Beave:
Everyday @ 6 am-10 am for the rental rush
10 am-2 pm split shift ski break
2 pm-??? back in time for rental returns and then tuning all night

Beer and Bud hookups were great, but when you got the munchies and all you have to eat is p-tex...it wears on you quick. Beer and Bud will flow like wine no matter where you work, but tune ups aren't really needed if it's a sick year.
I opted for the low stress salad/prep boy job and learned alot of Spanish. Worked 6 hours a night/4 nights a week. Skied 120+ plus for 3 years and never worried about a thing.

I figure there will be some competition for the primo bum jobs, hell Ill happy working at a 7 11 3rd shift if it meant I could ride 120 days. Hopefully, it wont be more than a couple days.

I wouldn't say it's a competition so much as trusting/believing your future employer won't feed you a bunch of lines about how much ski time you'll get and then stick it to you once season starts.

Live and learn I guess, but if you have to start a new job mid-season, you'll find yourself at the bottom of the totum pole. The more money you save the less likely that will happen though, b/c you will have the upper hand on how much you need to work.

you should seriously become a drug dealer, but only for a little while, always leave your customers wanting more. And for fucks sake get decent shit, for instance, get a club card and make trips to cali for the famous "white widow." That will keep you in money and women for a season. Better yet, sell to other drug dealers, become the pablo escobar of the ski industry.

I wouldnt take a job that made me work days, I was checkin the classifieds for shits and giggles and the movie theater sounds like a primo gig for a little extra spending cash.

Drug dealing would get messy. Bad deals can often lead to bodies, angry other dealers. You know. Pluses would include a desk with a pile of coke only Tony Montana could appreciate.
