I have an extensive cd library and use Delicious Library to catalog it all. The middle pane of DL looks like a shelf where all your cds are stored. Now imagine you could manipulate that shelf with Core Animation ala the demo they showed. Necessary? No. Really fucking sweet? Yes!

I was reading a discussion about Time Machine in another forum. What's really interesting is that TM might be an allusion to a new file system in the OS. If this is the case, some really interesting stuff could be coming down the pipeline with regard to the Finder and the way we work with our files. I'd like to think Dominic Giampaolo (the creator of BFS and now an Apple employee) has been hard at work for the past couple of years.

I was wondering about that. Currently the default is HFS+, so you've got journaling. This would give them retro-compatability for TM on existing installs... But new install could go for an entirely new FS, expanding the possibility for some more advanced (and efficient?) TM style systems... Hmm...

The normal workday goes that you go to computer,turn it on,turn on the applications you need (CS 2,Safari,Cyber Duck and Mail) and after work day,make it go to sleep. At some point in the midnight CarbonCopyCloner backups whatever neccessary.
Obviously there are huge amount of pro´s and consumers that really need all the stuff from the OS,and is craving for more, but still,the whole concept
of broadening the os is..well..intresting?

But yes,the new MPs look purty. But i think i still will wait untill the end of the year if my old workhorses keeps on working properly.
At least untill some verification when the Clovertowns will get in to MacPros,or if the 4 socketed mobo makes into MPs...

Or most importantly,when the motherfucking CS 3 would come out with universal binaries.

Jesus, the MacPro can take up to SIXTEEN GB of RAM? FKNA (plus it costs $5700 to upgrade to that much - but I guess if you need this kind of RAM you are a missile designer anyway and the Koreans will pay)...

the last couple generations of the powermac also had the ability to address 16GB of main memory, so not really anything new.

edit: actually, according to Apple's product description of the G5, "with 42 bits of physical address space, the PowerPC G5 supports a colossal 4 terabytes (4TB) of system memory. Although it’s not currently feasible to purchase 4TB of RAM, the advanced architecture of the PowerPC G5 allows for plenty of growth in the future."

There has been a lot of hope going around that Apple will adopt ZFS. If I recall correctly, it does versioning along with a host of other things. It's pretty much THE file system right now.

It's only that much if you buy the RAM direct from Apple, who have a tendency to massively overprice their RAM. Much better to add more yourself later.

It's almost certainly worth waiting for rev B of the Mac Pros - no doubt there'll be a few bugs to iron out first.

I use spam sieve for my filtering and it works pretty good(98.5%). Every week or so a new spam format will come out that it won't catch but you train it with a couple messages and it's all good.

I use it concurrently with mail and entourage and it shares the same corpus and rules and what not. Pretty slick.

And it gives you your stats:

11134 Good Messages
26823 Spam Messages (71%)
95 Spam Messages Per Day

SpamSieve Accuracy
77 False Positives
486 False Negatives (86%)
98.5% Correct

Not to hijack, but I just downloaded thunderbird based on the recommendation on here. I have gmail, and got it all set up with that, but I'm wondering if there's a way to get my old messages onto thunderbird. When I hit "get new mail" button it just says there's no new messages. Any ideas?

Can you mark them all unread in gmail then try getting them with thunderbird?

See but actual pros are running a server that backs itself up and not keeping origionals/current shit being worked on their actual workstation... ie: sourcesafe etc. Everyone else just needs an external hard drive that mirrors pertinent data.

Its just STUPID to work otherwise.

Sorry, I don't have any more stats beyond that list. Most of them though come when the spammers change their tactics and the filter doesn't know what to do with them. I usually just have to train it with a few of the messages and it starts catching them. Some messages do take longer than others to catch with the training.

do you ahve any rough feel for false positives, if not stats? (it would be vary hard to get stats for false positives, anyway).

the stats you posted assume that it gets a high percentage of SPAM...but it could also be catching some non-SPAM in that denominator. I.e., set the filter to "high" and almost no SPAM will get through, but you might miss some valid messages. Set the filter lower and you have to deal with more SPAM but you don't lose the real messages.

Heh, I was thinking false positive's in a different way, ie applied to good messages. ;)

I go through my spam boxes every few days and I rarely have a message in there that wasn't spam. Things that typically get caught as spam are things like website registrations and other automated emails.
