Note: A bunch of replies to a lot of busy threads (and possibly even some new threads) got lost when the server's harddisk crapped out and ONS had to start from scratch from a backup that was a few hours hold.

Yeah Intrawest fucks. They took away the 'Extreme Benches' where we used to shout and claim how rad we got that day. They took the bench away so we'd sit inside and buy crap.
Good news for all you Intrawest haters, they've lost an ass load of money on the Village in Squaw Valley and are trying to find a way to pull out.
To be honest I'm kinda torn on this issue. If Intrawest would have done things right instead of being greedy bastards, then they could have done great things. However, because of said actions on their part they are losing customers. And that is causing loss of jobs and economic prosperity to the areas they are involved in. Every local business here is praying that they leave soon. (now there is alot to this. When Intrawest took over Tremblant from the Quebec Gov't, they got alot of tax breaks, and the municipality paid for most of the water and electical. That is coming to an end now. Intrawest will have to start to share their part of the municipal tax burden)Quote:

If you haven't figured out that skiing is a business, not a lifestyle, then you're sadly out of touch, and I'd like to sell you some "Dolphin Safe" Tuna.
The reason why local or family run ski-resorts are around is because they're praying they'll be bought out by IntraWest, VA, or someone else. Hey, it saved Crystal Mtn, and it might just save your hill next.

My only experience with Intrawest is Whistler-Blackcomb. There the cafeteria is the cafeteria. Brown bag it if you want, buy food if you want, the water's free and there are microwaves to heat you lunch. You're spending $68-$71 to get hauled up the mountain so if you want to sit inside and read the paper while the wind blows then that's ok. I don't know why Tremblant has issues; maybe Whistler's lucky because Intrawest is constrained by the Municipality of Whistler.Quote:

When I'm at the resort I never use the lodge. Hate the lodge. If I wanted to pay $3 for bottled water, get bumped by every idiot that walks by, listen to little spoiled kids whine and argue with their parents, etc. I would just drive to the closest mall for a couple hours. I go to the mountain to get away from it all. The less time I have to deal with idiots, the better my day.
While I am not YourAttorney, I would bet that the b**ch in the lodge was wrong, because if you were to have gone outside and gotten frostbite, you probably could have sued and won a nice chunk of change - and while Intrawest might not know jack about skiing, they seem like the type of outfit to have sharp lawyers.
Either way, they suck.
If this shit starts happening at Whistler I'm going to pissed. That is bullshit. Bullshit. By the way, if you want water buy a case of it at the grocery store for 3 bucks. That is not hard people.

Here's what I know about the lodge in question (note: I will be making assumptions and I fully expect to be corrected by Mr. Burke):
There's an upstairs and a downstairs. Both have cafeterias, but the upstairs one is noticably "swankier." Technically neither of them allow brown bagging it, but I've never had a problem "getting away with it." Usually I'll commit my crime downstairs, but I have dared to open the bag upstairs as well (note: I am far from a frequent visitor).
Upstairs there is a small section of the eating area near the bar that houses a fireplace. I've always understood this to be part of the bar or, at least, for the bar patrons. I'm assuming this is where the offence took place. I'm also assuming that the employee in question was asking you to leave the fireplace area, not the lodge itself. I have a hard time believing that they would not have let you have a seat somewhere else in the lodge, be it upstairs or down.
In any case, as someone stated, disagreements with policy are always best discussed with people who can change them.

May be true in some cases, but certainly not in all. Mission ridge was just bought from Harbor Properties (McCaw) by locals. It makes money, they plan to expand and to continue running it as a local hill.Quote:

Baker is successful, it is not on the block, and it would never be a target for Intrawest. It has no expansion potential, no real estate, no condos to sell. Their business model works, but it will never generate the return that Intrawest wants.

Baker's problem (from talking to one of the managers) is electricity -- they have to make their own. They can't bring in power via overhead lines because of the trees and snow and going underground requires 30+ stream crossing, each of which requires an environmental impact study.Quote:
