Mesa Boogie DC-5

you can find 1x12 or 2x12 combos that are louder and nicer than a Marshall Stack. Prolly can find them for $500 to $700.

I have a DC-5 head that i run through a Mesa recto 4x12 on top of a Mesa recto 2x12 and its sooooo fucking loud. I like my DC-5 better than a Dual Rec and escpecialy Marshalls...but MOST (not all) Marshals just cant cut it for Metal.....and im NOT talking about Preist, Zakk, Maiden, EARLY Metal...but Newer Dirtier Sounding thick Distortion Metal. Just my opinion for what I play.

Don't overlook Peavey. The Valveking 112 is sweet and well within your price range. The Valveking 212 is awesome and just $75 over your pricepoint.

my jcm 60 gets quiet dirty and is loud as fuck.can run a 4 x 12 cab off it or run it directly to the PA out the back. the new versions have 3 channels( clean,brown and full out distortion.

Nice amp.
I tried a few of them out andI just dont like Marshalls for what i do. They are loud, but no where near as loud as a Mesa:biggrin:

I dunno. Once you start getting over 30 watts for a speaker, I've rarely cared for the way they sound. If you are going to use a 2X12, like I said before, Celestion greenback 25 watt spkrs. If your head is 100 watts, just pull one of the power tubes and knock it down to 50.

Oh, and here's something else to think about:

"Hartley's Law of Inverse Tonality states that the worse the tone, the more indestructable the amp."

Sorry yeah...i meant DC-3 in a 1x12. DC-5 in a 2x12.

Not exactly.

You need to pull two power tubes of the four, the outside or the inside pair, to get the 1/2 power and you must change the impedance setting for the speaker out jack. Failure to do the latter can blow the transformer.

The most important thing for sounding like the bands you mentioned is a closed back speaker cabinet. You can get plenty of crunch out of pedals, but nothing will substitute for the "thump". Open back cabnets wail, but don't have that gut punch.

The problem is it's really hard to find a closed-back combo -- but they are out there.

Well, depending on the amp. I'm thinking particularly of my amps with 2 x EL34s. But yes, you need to pull half of the tubes, so if your amp has four, you pull two. I've never had to change the impedance, though. I keep my impedance at whatever my speaker requires.

But rather than pull tubes, I have been relying on the THD Hot Plate, actually these days.

1. Peavey 5150 / 6150 has ample bass and is fine for metal. I think the combo is closed back but I'm not sure. I'll check when I get home.

2. Line 6: judge for yourself. Don't listen to us. If you think it sounds like god then go for it. I've heard them and for live work they are fine in my opinion. And that's an opinion, not fact.

3. Grammy? I think I have some Nabisco Grammies at work. ;)
