My thoughts exactly. First prize is a year's subscription to Ski Magazine. Second prize is a two-year subscription to Ski Magazine.Quote:

Are you saying that SKI turns a larger profit than Powder, but somehow the content of Powder is superior to that of SKI? If so, where are all the advertisers running to the better mag, seeing that its superior content will help it sell more issues?
Maybe I am arguing myself in circles here, but it just doesn't add up. If SKI can do it, and Ski Racing, a magazine with a much smaller audience, can do it, why can't Powder?
The fact that the content is superior to US doesn't mean it sells more.Quote:

Considering they are owned by Primedia, that seems too good to be true.
I think it has something to do with different segments of the market and stuff.
SKI is an ad magazine buffed around the edges with a sprinkling of stories tailored for a larger audience. It's part of Time Warner AOL. Check the price of a full page ad compared to Powder. Rags are like movies. How many tickets get sold dictates a review in it's own way. In other words, circulation numbers are the numbers advertisers watch. Snow Country used to be virtually free. It made for big circ numbers that likely influenced ad costs.
Mags owned by corps make certain numbers or they go away. Props to the guys down at the Powder orifices for saving the magazine when Primedia thought it was worthless. And they still fight a battle every day to make it what it is. A few years ago I almost felt Powder was a comic book, it was so thin and the paper so crappy. The guys have made big strides to revive it. I love the look of the magazine now. I'd love to see more content in each issue, but the stories have also been great. I thought KD's story on Santa Rosa in the last issue was off the hook.
Powdermag.com will also get some resuscitation breaths soon, too, I hear.
There is a belief that the future will see the electronic side succeeding over print. Another case for bathroom internet...

Dipstick- no comment on the fact that Powder DOES IN FACT keep the content rolling regularly? Internet not good enough for ya? It even saves trees for all you tree huggers out there.

You're right, that's just friggin' crazy talk! It'd be like people making independent films instead of everybody running to Hollywood.Quote:

Some people care about their work, some sell out.
SKI mag good as some of the stuff can be, still has one thing that irks me every year. Its reader are bunch of YUPPIES jongs who some how pick Deer Valley, UT as the number one resort over other "better" resort in the nation not to mention Utah it self.
On second thought, maybe thats not such a bad thing.....
There you go boys...Quote:

Check their permit to operate. It may specify that they close on a certain date. This is true with many areas, or it may just be based on finacial reasons. Ski areas are very much included in those that ought to but are not marketing to draw new skiers in the spring and promoting and extending the season. A certain mountain in Central Oregon has a great beginner program that they run consecutive weekends in the heart of winter when it is cold, blowing, snowing and pretty much pure misery for the constantly underprepared skiers. Though they get three days of lesson's and rentals for something like $90.00 less than 25 percent make it to the final weekend. Think how many more would get hooked on the sport if they were there in the spring.Quote:

I like Powder, but stopped subscribing due to some delivery problems they seemed to have. Ski magazine delivers magazines I never even ordered and continually extends my subscription. From looking at the cover, I noticed that Ski seems to have a shiny, glossy, happier feel to it. I like being happy and free shit that you don't use is great, so Ski is better.

That's okay, it's still free. I just look at pictures.Quote:

Two issues of SKI magically appeared in my mailbox in Seattle as I was packing up the apartment to move back to Bend. I looked at one briefly while on the throne and tossed it aside. Both issues went into re-cycle as I continued packing. Nearly ten years of POWDER went into boxes to make the move with me. Nuff said!Quote:

I no longer even subscribe to Powder - not becasue I don't care for the mag but because I just get overwhelmed with crap in my mailbox, and I'm kinda sick of it.
You should try to stop the mail.Quote:
