looks like no big storms, so door #3 if you don't mind driving on possibly snow-packed or dusted 60mph roads and it's daylight. Ya watch Cokeville. If you go I15- I.F. the passes [pine ck and teton] are in good winter shape today. I'd be going 89/evanston but then again i hate ogden and I15 in general...
FWIW. Watch for speed traps between Rock Springs and Pinedale as I know several folks who have been nailed for speeding along that stretch. Big open road makes you want to drive fast and the cops make some good revenue.
why the hell would you be near Rock Springs driving from SLC to Jackson?

I drove option 2 this past (superbowl) Sunday. If youre comfortable driving fast on packed snow I say go for it. 89 was fine and 34 was 55 miles of snow rally fun. The rest of the drive was standard, didnt see too many cops and no ice worth mentioning.

We drove route #1 on Sunday and it was bone dry except on the pass which was not bad at all. Yeah, you drive on an interstate most of the way, but the speed limit is higher and therefore faster. Pretty boring drive, but it is cool tracing the ancient shorelines of Lake Bonneville, and the flood through Redrock pass.
I once drove from Jackson to SLC and stopped at a gas station in Jackson to ask the fastest/best route. I was told Jackson-Alpine-Afton-Cokeville-Randolph-Evanston-SLC would take about 4-5 hours (it was winter, but relatively dry). I botched a turn before Cokeville and ended up driving around the NW side of Bear Lake and through Logan, UT. That's definitely not the fastest way to go.

Last month I drove to SLC via the pass and I15 and came back on 89 through evanston. Time was pretty similar, weather was good both ways. I prefer I15 just because its more traveled, more services and more predictable. There are large stretches with zero cell service on 89. I stopped for a car that had gone off the road and almost had to call for help for them which was quite a ways away. Luckily a cop showed up. I'd hate to be in a situation like that.
