Hehe, no mullet right now but one's brewing. :D

I don't want to see bbirtle banned (why? no reason for it? and his Cham reports are nice) - not sure anyone suggested it though. I do intend to carry on laughing at him if he carries on making gags like the above. Anyway, I am going to crash at his place when I crash Gordy's camp. :D

*Sigh*... Sad thing is I probably read 1,000 posts these last few weeks. This forum is @#$ing addictive. Sadly (or maybe not) snow has finally come so I fear I am about to slip even further from the TGR buzz that I just only started to get into...

Those of you that signed up for the camp should be pleased... we have a great base here now. Enjoy and maybe see you at the pub.

If you are only planning to ski lift accessible off piste and already have adequate avo safety knowledge, I personally think the guide is wholly unnecessary. You can just ask around, buy the guidebook, and be on your way. Ditto if you want to do ski tours in the Aiguille Roughes. The great thing about Chamonix is if you are armed with a guidebook and map, there is almost always a clear track to follow and plenty of people around to ask for directions and advice. It's a great place to explore, in that sense.

If you want to do anything glaciated (eg Vallee Blanche) and do not have adequate experience on glaciars, they are vital for your safety. Ditto if the tour is technical and you don't have the experience (eg requires absailing/rappelling, or has short roped climbing sections.).

They are also nice to have if you want to gain knowledge of the above skills, treating it as a class.

If you do have glaciar travel experience, then see comments about always having a track and people to ask, be cautious and smart, and things like Pas de Chevre, Col du Plan, Les Trois Cols, are well possible and safe for independent travelers. Spend the 360 euros/day you save on more gear and more beer.

After re-reading my original post I'm trying to figure out how you could come to the conclusion that I was asking an opinion about guides.

Also, I'm wondering how many days you've spent in Chamonix? While some of your points have merit, some of your suggestions like following tracks and guides being wholly unnecessary on lift accessible terrain are just plain wrong. The vast and various terrain that is accessible by lift and the variable snow conditions around Chamonix are definitely worthy of a guide if you are an expert skier from out of town and want to maximize your experience.

fack gordy... i was totally going to bust his chops on that! the inside hand down in the snow, rotated upper body not square down the fall line, generally just not looking strong on the skis. etc.

on another note, i might be interested in this trip. the wife basically said i had the GREEN light on your private AK heli trip, but i couldn't pull the trigger on it for a couple of reasons. a trip to Chamonix though could fit the bill.... i'll be calling soon.
