Sticky. Nice.
Sick and ashamed and happy (and sounds worthwhile to me...),
d.
Temple is so sweet, when I was there all the private rooms were booked so they put my GF and I up in an injured employees room for three days while he was in Christchurch recovering. We left beer. Truly awesome hospitality. I'm definately in for pitching some $$$.
Never ben but sounds like a place to dream for. I'd put in $25 now and $25 after the holidays pass.
Hey guys, cheers for all your support of Temple. I was swapping a few e-mails with the Temple club president the other day and he seemed cautiously optimistic about the way the rescue effort was going and about operations in 2006. In terms of long term viability though they are keeping an open mind, most of the income these days comes from school field trips for biology and geology during the summer, they rent the lodges out for 50 kids for a week and it is easy money. For about the last 5+ years the money made during the summer has been enough to cover the losses of the winter operation. Temple has been recognised by the Department of Conservation as a 'super site' for outdoor education so they are trying to milk that for all it is worth and keep the winter operations going.
There have been a few club fields go under lately here, but they have all had crappy snow and lame terrain, the real tragedy is that Temple has incredible terrain and snow (usually). Think of a mountain like Jackson Hole (but a bit smaller and no trees) but with the simplest facilities and lifts so it never gets too busy, and all the prenentious posers stay away, that is Temple.
I am just waiting to hear back about the total raised and the maggot contribution, but in the mean time here are a few pics from the closing day of the 2004 season:

I just got this:

Hi Paul,
We have had US$150 of donations in from the paypal account which have been transferred to our account today. The fundraising has been very successful with donations still coming in.
There is a committee meeting early next week and the AGM next Wednesday where I'm sure the decision will be made that 2006 is all go. People have been incredibly supportive and I'm sure will support the ski season (given good snow!) as well.
I will let you know next week what the 'decision' is.

Jo Glynn

Is this the grand total, or just a recent transfer? I can't believe that only three maggots threw down to save Temple. :nonono2:Quote:

Props to CJ, LB and any others that pitched in to help.
I didnt see a paypal addy in the thread.
Lane Meyer should edit post #1 to make it clear that this is a fundraiser, and have directions on how to contribute.
It is a STICKY now - so do something with it.
info AT templebasin DOT co DOT nz is the paypal email address.
Cheers guys for all the support. Temple is far to special a place to let it go quietly. So if anyone hasn't donated yet please do. Its really cool to see how much the greater Temple Basin community has banded together to save the field. May it continue :)
For those that have never been it truely is a unique place. Everyone should ski there before they die ;)
come on folks! bring it (I know it took me a while to get the bling in motion too).
Skea:

is the peak in the background the one directly across the highway?
WTF - Editing won't let me change the main title, just the little one that's actually on the first page.......? Any ideas?
PM Frozen/ONS with the title you would like
and don't forget to put in info regarding the paypal email acct.
No the one in the picture is MT Phipps (spelling?). The one you are thinking of is mount Rolleston. That photo is taken from upper cassidy looking north over Bills Basin to the top of the Elevator.Quote:

Rolleston is hidden behind the clouds
Ante up folks!
^Yeah, what he said. BTW photo credit for all those pics goes to mashed penguin.
Phipps is fairly accessable from Temple Basin, it is a hike up and ski back down to the lifts. The lower peak to the right of Phipps, the pointy one, is Mt Temple which is also pretty cool, lots of steep chutes that feed straight back to the lifts, mashed penguin and I had an 'interesting' climb near the top of there in 2004 too... (could have ended badly but we were a little lucky)
But yeah, the $150 is the total to date, I am sure the maggots should try to get to the $400 to get the communal maggot seasons pass (I already have my own so don't worry about any locals hogging it.) Of course assuming we get the communal pass we need to decide what name and photo to put on it.;)
The name should be Leeeeeeroy Jenkins.
Photo is up for debate.
Here's a shot opf Whistler's Ryan Bougie's tracks (right arrow) on Mt. Phipps, August 8th 2005. bougie skied it the day before.....the left arrow is a telemarker who hiked up to repeat the job. This is in a BAD snow year......

So, Dec 1st has come and gone - what's the verdict on Temple's survival? Anyone know?
Wooo hoooo!! :DQuote:
Paul,
So far $42000 has been raised so we are having a ski season. Our next priority is to establish the important ski week dates and make sure they are full of members.
Martin
I have yet to hear back about the maggot contribution, but the key thing now is to get yourself and your friends up there and enjoy the season ahead.
Long term, the mountain can't survive on winter operations alone, school groups on summer field trips are a big source of income now but this is a fickle market so get yourself up to Temple while you can!
Cheers to all the maggots for your support, if any of you are planning on heading up to Temple in 2006 pm me and I would be glad to play tour guide. In the mean time enjoy your winter ahead.
Nice! I just got this response back from them too:
"Hi Justin,
Thanks for your email. Temple has just had a terrible season snow-wise which was reflected in a financial shortfall needed to get us through to next season. The club decided to publicise this and distributed a letter to that effect, asking for donations/memberships to support the club. The club was to make a decision on the viability of continuing to operate on December 1 and guaranteed to return any donations made if the decision was made to not continue.
There has been a great response from old club members and friends of the club and we have also received a substantial community grant. As a result, the club has made the decision to continue operating and we are hoping for loads of snow and a good 2006 season.
Emphasis has also been placed on the necessity of increasing Temple's use as an educational site and the General Manager has been working on this. The summer program with schools is heavily booked and we are hoping to increase the snow/mountaineering educational programs over winter as well.
All in all, it is looking good for the future and we are definitely not facing insolvency.
If you would like copies of the emails sent out to the public, please let me know.
